El Nino Southern Oscillation-Related Ocean-Atmosphere Coupling In The Western Equatorial Pacific, D. A. Mayer, Robert H. Weisberg

Using 43 years of Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data: Set and related data for the period 1950-1992, an examination is made into the regional dependence of ocean-atmosphere coupling in relation to the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The cross correlation between sea surface temperature (SST) and sea level pressure (SLP) anomalies over the global tropics shows two patterns of significant negative correlation consistent with a local hydrostatic response of SLP to SST: (1) the eastern Pacific, where the correlation is symmetric about and largest on the equator, and (2) the western Pacific, where symmetric regions of-negative correlation are found off the equator, separated …

Activation of genes containing SRE-1 (sterol regulatory element 1) sequences is known to be under the regulation of sterols through modulation of the proteolytic maturation of SREBPs (SRE-1-binding proteins). Previous work has demonstrated SREBP-mediated transcriptional activation of genes encoding enzymes of sterol and fatty acid biosynthesis. Because synthesis of both sterols and C18 fatty acids are required for cell growth, in the absence of exogenous supplements of these lipids, we examined the hypothesis that fatty acid can also be regulatory in SREBP maturation. Production Of Energy-Dependent Time Delays In Impulsive Solar Flare Hard X-Ray Emission By Short-Duration Spectral Index Variations, Ted N. La Rosa, Steven N. Shore

Faculty Articles

Cross-correlation techniques have been used recently to study the relative timing of solar flare hard X-ray emission at different energies. These studies find that for the majority of the impulsive flares observed with BATSE there is a systematic time delay of a few tens of milliseconds between low (approximate to 50 keV) and higher energy emission (approximate to 100 keV). These time delays have been interpreted as energy-dependent time-of-flight differences for electron propagation from the corona, where they are accelerated, to the chromosphere, where the bulk of the hard X-rays are emitted. Highly Enantioselective Hplc Separations Using The Covalently Bonded Macrocyclic Antibiotic, Ristocetin A, Chiral Stationary Phase, K. Helen Ekborg-Ott, Youbang Liu, Daniel W. Armstrong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The macrocyclic glycopeptide, ristocetin A, was covalently bonded to a silica gel support and evaluated as a liquid chromatographic (LC) chiral stationary phase (CSP). Over 230 racemates were resolved in either the reversed-phase mode, the normal-phase mode, or the polar-organic mode. The retention behavior and selectivity of this CSP were examined in each mode. Optimization of separations on this column is discussed. The ristocetin A CSP appeared to be complimentary to other glycopeptide CSPs (i.e., vancomycin and teicoplanin). Column stability was excellent. The CSP was not irreversibly altered when going from one mobile phase mode to another.
