Developmental Regulation Of A Cyclin-Dependent Kinase Inhibitor Controls Postembryonic Cell Cycle Progression In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Yang Hong, Richard Roy, Victor Ambros

C. elegans cki-1 encodes a member of the CIP/KIP family of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, and functions to link postembryonic developmental programs to cell cycle progression. The expression pattern of cki-1::GFP suggests that cki-1 is developmentally regulated in blast cells coincident with G1, and in differentiating cells. Ectopic expression of CKI-1 can prematurely arrest cells in G1, while reducing cki-1 activity by RNA-mediated interference (RNAi) causes extra larval cell divisions, suggesting a role for cki-1 in the developmental control of

Ron Collins arrived at Eastern Michigan University in 1965 as Assistant Professor of Chemistry. After becoming Department Head in 1977, he was made Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1980, and then Provost in 1983 where he served until his retirement. In this interview, Collins discusses low EMU enrollment at the time of his arrival, the changes to the University over time, which Collins calls “overwhelmingly positive,” and the technological advances at Eastern. This interview was conducted for the purpose of gathering primary research for Laurence Smith’s book, Eastern Michigan University: A Sesquicentennial Portrait (1999).

Agonist-bound heptahelical receptors activate heterotrimeric G proteins by catalyzing exchange of GDP for GTP on their α subunits. In search of an approximation of the receptor-α subunit complex, we have considered the properties of A326S G(iα1), a mutation discovered originally in G(sα) (Iiri, T., Herzmark, P., Nakamoto, J. M., Van Dop, C., and Bourne, H. R. (1994) Nature 371, 164-168) that mimics the effect of receptor on nucleotide exchange. The mutation accelerates dissociation of GDP from the α(i1)β₁γ₂ heterotrimer by 250-fold. Nevertheless, affinity of mutant G(iα1) for GTPγS is high in the presence of Mg²⁺, …

Tyrosine Phosphorylation Of C-Erbb-2 Is Regulated By The Cellular Form Of Prostatic Acid Phosphatase In Human Prostate Cancer Cells, Tzu Ching Meng, Ming Fong Lin

Human prostatic acid phosphatase (PAcP) is a prostate epithelium- specific differentiation antigen. In prostate carcinomas, the cellular PAcP is decreased. We investigated its functional role in these cells. Several lines of evidence support the hypothesis that cellular PAcP functions as a neutral protein-tyrosine phosphatase and is involved in regulating prostate cell growth. In this study, we identify its in vivo substrate. Our results demonstrated that, in different human prostate cancer cell lines, the phosphotyrosine (Tyr(P)) level of a 185-kDa phosphoprotein (pp185) inversely correlates with the cellular activity of PAcP. On SDS-PAGE, this pp185 comigrates with the c-ErbB-2 oncoprotein. Immunodepletion experiments …

During a conference highlighting "sustainable Communities," Margaret Thomas presented a paper based upon a 1994 research project designed to explore economic development strategies that would increase local prosperity and also protect the environment and protect natural resources. She described the economy and ecology as two sides of the same coin and proposed reconsidering human systems and industrial systems in the light of these two natural laws: 1) resources are to be used no faster than they are replenished, and 2) matter is ultimately recycled for reuse in biological or physical systems.

The Hrp (type III protein secretion) system is essential for the plant parasitic ability of Pseudomonas syringae and most Gram-negative bacterial plant pathogens. AvrB and AvrPto are two P. syringae proteins that have biological activity when produced via heterologous gene expression inside plant cells or when produced by Hrp+ bacteria. Art-like proteins, presumably injected by the Hrp system on bacterial contact with plant cells, appear to underlie pathogenic interactions, but none has been observed outside of the bacterial cytoplasm, and identifying novel genes encoding them is tedious and uncertain without a phenotype in culture. Detergent-Salt Resistance Of Lap2Α In Interphase Nuclei And Phosphorylation-Dependent Association With Chromosomes Early In Nuclear Assembly Implies Functions In Nuclear Structure Dynamics, Thomas Dechat, Josef Gotzmann, Andreas Stockinger, Crafford A. Lamina-associated polypeptide (LAP) 2 of the inner nuclear membrane (now LAP2β) and LAP2α are related proteins produced by alternative splicing, and contain a common 187 amino acid N-terminal domain. We show here that, unlike LAP2β, LAP2α behaved like a nuclear non-membrane protein in subcellular fractionation studies and was localized throughout the nuclear interior in interphase cells. It co-fractionated with LAP2β in nuclear lamina/matrix-enriched fractions upon extraction of nuclei with detergent, salt and nucleases. During metaphase LAP2α dissociated from chromosomes and became concentrated around the spindle poles. Furthermore, LAP2α was mitotically phosphorylated, and phosphorylation correlated with increased LAP2α solubility upon extraction …

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

(Department of Defense Form No. 4, 1992). With this affirmation, military campaigns are launched. Missions are undertaken. Battles are fought. Ultimately, people die fighting for this nation.

Habitat Use By Parturient And Nonparturient Caribou Of The Mentasta Caribou Herd, Neil L. Barten

I compared habitat use and diet characteristics among preparturient female caribou (Rangifer tarandus), and between parturient and nonparturient caribou during and after parturition, in the Mentasta Caribou Herd, Alaska, to explain movements by parturient females just prior to giving birth. I monitored 39 radio-collared females in 1994 and 40 animals in 1995. I estimated forage biomass, collected forage for determination of nitrogen and in-vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), and collected fecal pellets to calculate indices of diet composition and diet quality at sites used by caribou. The Psychological Record

Selectionist theory in psychology conceptualizes behavior as a dynamic phenomenon subject to a variation and selection process similar to that characterizing biological evolution. Though not formally recognized as a dominant psychological metatheory, selectionist thought can be identified in the writings of many of the discipline's eminent scholars. Although selectionism may possess considerable promise as a unifying theory, its widespread acceptance has likely been impeded by the large sample, null hypothesis testing research designs associated with the Fisherian tradition.
