Rhodes Scholar: Defining An Opportunity, Kevin Diehl Jan 1998

Rhodes Scholar: Defining An Opportunity, Kevin Diehl

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

While amateur athletes pursue the Olympics to prove their athletic prowess, collegiate scholars try to quantify their academic success by winning a Rhodes Scholarship. Track athletes must post an acceptable qualifying time just to compete in the Olympic trials where they must earn a berth to the Olympics. Likewise, after receiving their university's formal endorsement, aspiring Rhodes Scholars have to portray their all-around qualities and dreams in an application and essay, hoping to earn the chance just to be selected for a state interview. If they are fortunate at this level, the applicants become one of two nominees from each …

Dual Protection In An Integrated Community-Based Program: A Case Study Of Tanzania Family Health/Ministry Of Health Project In Mbeya, Grace Mbekem, Jane Chege

Reproductive Health

One of the most pressing challenges for health programs in most sub-Saharan African countries is effectively addressing the increasing prevalence of HIV/AIDS. Recent evidence suggests that controlling sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) through undertaking preventive measures, early diagnosis, and treatment significantly slows the spread of HIV/AIDS. In regard to STI/HIV, Maternal and Child Health (MCH) and Family Planning (FP) clients are described as “low risk” groups. However, in a number of sub-Saharan African countries, the reported levels of STDs are significantly high enough to justify use of limited resources to target this group for STD services. MCH/FP programs have begun to …

Asia & Near East Operations Research And Technical Assistance Project Dissemination Strategy, July 1995–January 1998, Population Council

Reproductive Health

During the first phase of the ANE OR/TA project (1990–95), 55 studies and 23 workshops were conducted in 9 countries. In support of this effort, a dissemination strategy was produced that guided the communications activities of the first phase. Regional communications officers were hired in New Delhi and Cairo, and the project began to systematically address its objectives of communicating the findings of all studies to a diverse array of audiences within each country, subregion, and internationally. Several activities were undertaken to create a coherent and unified framework for disseminating the results of studies and informing audiences of recent project …

The Power Of Prime-Time Television, Chris Boyd Jan 1998

The Power Of Prime-Time Television, Chris Boyd

Honors Theses

I intend to illustrate the possibilities of prime-time television's impact on creating positive social change. For this to occur, television would be acting as a leader to the audiences at home. Through the images shown on screen, lessons would be learned and attitudes would be changes. This change can happen through various avenues, but they all lead to the same goal, an improved society.

Indigenous Groups In Latin America : Emergence Of Indentity And Prospects For Self-Determination, Eduardo J. Abreu Jan 1998

Indigenous Groups In Latin America : Emergence Of Indentity And Prospects For Self-Determination, Eduardo J. Abreu

Honors Theses

When discussing the history and emulation of what today is called the Americas (North, Central, and South) it is almost instinctive for one to begin to conceptualize the beginning of its history stemming from the arrival of Western Europeans and their successors. A large part of this is due to the simple fact that history books and education have been written, ironically, by the very minority that established institutions in these eas; thus their very arrival becomes the reference point of their history. Yet, what is so readily forgotten, and sometimes barely acknowledged, is the rich history and civilization that …

The Impact Of Collaborative Leadership On Community Building, Lindsay Sikes Jan 1998

The Impact Of Collaborative Leadership On Community Building, Lindsay Sikes

Honors Theses

As the twentieth century comes to a close a shift in paradigm is taking place in civic life. The feeling of anomie and disaggregation is slowly giving way to the belief that citizens do indeed have the capability and desire to invest in and take responsibility for their communities. Past attempts in problem solving have seen repeated failures and an increase in the frustration of communities as the same problems plague their lives. In hopes of eliminating this cycle of despair, the citizens of today's society are turning more and more to the benefits of collaborative efforts.

After five months …

King David : God's Annointed One : A Study Of Leadership Theory Through Analysis Of King David, Chris Headley Jan 1998

King David : God's Annointed One : A Study Of Leadership Theory Through Analysis Of King David, Chris Headley

Honors Theses

The intention of this text is to examine Biblical leadership principles. Because this author believes wholly in the full Divine Inspiration of the Bible, these principles are deemed, in this text, to be accurate, appropriate, and applicable to the daily lives of leaders. The leadership principles of the Bible will not be evaluated by outside texts regardless of current academic leadership thought.

There is a great deal that should be said to summarize what King David taught generations of people about leadership. Some of the lessons are solely Christian, others are very applicable to the secular world. In summary, David's …

Leadership In William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet And Julius Caesar, Kelly Lynn Pearce

Honors Theses

The body of my paper is divided into several sections. In the first section, I will briefly discuss the existing literature on leadership and Shakespeare and my methodology in determining aspects of Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar that pertain to leadership. In Part II of my paper, I will provide an overview of the Elizabethan world-view and history, focusing primarily on perceptions of leadership, in order to provide a context for discussion. Part Ill will be an evaluation of Romeo and Juliet. First I will analyze the play as to how it reflects Elizabethan concerns regarding leadership. Immediately following …

Leadership Curricula And The Changing Organization, Matthew Repella Jan 1998

Leadership Curricula And The Changing Organization, Matthew Repella

Honors Theses

This project involves many issues regarding organizational leadership. It seems in the past, all people thought of was management. True, those were different times, when manufacturing was the primary means of employment and factory workers were everywhere. As businesses have progressed through the industrial revolution and the service industry has become more prevalent, the workforce has changed with the times. This requires new thoughts on organizational leadership. It cannot be said that leadership does not change as the situation and/or the followers change. Likewise, as we progress into future, un-chartered territory, leadership will be affected. This paper seeks to determine …

Toward A Theory Of Reciprocal Responsibility Between Clients And Lawyers: A Comment On David Wilkins’ Do Clients Have Ethical Obligations To Lawyers? Some Lessons From The Diversity Wars, Carrie Menkel-Meadow Jan 1998

Toward A Theory Of Reciprocal Responsibility Between Clients And Lawyers: A Comment On David Wilkins’ Do Clients Have Ethical Obligations To Lawyers? Some Lessons From The Diversity Wars, Carrie Menkel-Meadow

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

On my plane flight to attend the American Association of Law Schools meeting at which Professor David Wilkins presented his paper, Do Clients Have Ethical Obligations to Lawyers? Some Lessons From the Diversity Wars, the pilot requested passengers to "assist the flight attendants in their principal duty of providing safety to all passengers," following a recent incident with mid-flight turbulence in which one person died and several were injured. The pilot reminded us that "service" was only a secondary function of the flight attendants, with their principal duty being to ensure that all of us traveled and arrived safely, …

Measuring Progress; Evaluating The Strengthening Of Communities, Phil Bartle Jan 1998

Measuring Progress; Evaluating The Strengthening Of Communities, Phil Bartle

Evaluation/Reflection

Our goal is stated; we want to strengthen communities. We feel that we have a methodology to do so, but how can we know when we have succeeded, or to what extent?

What we may mean by the above question, is, "How do we measure the strengthening of communities that we claim we are doing?" Put in other ways, "What do we mean by strengthening communities, by increasing their capacities, by empowering them?" We can use these three (1 empowering, 2 strengthening, 3 capacity building) interchangeably, although one or another may be more acceptable to different people. …

How Would You Like Your Television: With Or Without Borders And With Or Without Culture--A New Approach To Media Regulation In The European Union, Kevin M. Mcdonald

Fordham International Law Journal

This Essay analyzes the effectiveness of television broadcasting regulations as a means to effectuate the promotion and protection of a pan-European culture, namely, television broadcasting regulations. First, in Part I, this Essay considers the broader background developments in the audio-visual sector that led to the passing of the Directive. Part II looks at the advantages and disadvantages of the most controversial aspect of the Directive, namely, the quota provisions. Part III critiques the Directive's effectiveness in realizing its dual goals of both protecting and promoting a pan-European culture. Finally, Part IV compares the goals enunciated in the Federal Communications Act …

The Role Of Political And Sexual Identity In The Works Of Klaus Mann, James R. Keller Jan 1998

The Role Of Political And Sexual Identity In The Works Of Klaus Mann, James R. Keller

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This critical study of Klaus Mann attempts to determine the role of sexual and political identity in his works. By examining such recurrent thematic patterns as the work of art as progeny, supernatural births, the image of the writer as soldier and monk, or obsession with death, among others, the study finds in Klaus Mann a characteristic sense of "social self-identity." The study considers Mann's fiction and non-fiction prose, drama, and diaries to show the interrelationship between his political development as an anti-fascist and his sexual identity as a gay writer.

The theoretical approach to Mann's works contrasts earlier twentieth-century …

A Model For Training Church Family Life Directors In Hispanic Congregations In The Michigan Conference, Jorge Raul Mayer Jan 1998

A Model For Training Church Family Life Directors In Hispanic Congregations In The Michigan Conference, Jorge Raul Mayer

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. The complexity of today’s life—with divorce, parenting inadequacy, juvenile delinquency, one-parent households, financial pressures, and the sexual revolution— creates significant distress to the families. Within the general population of the United States, Hispanics find additional stressors in acculturation and machismo. The families in Hispanic congregations of the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventists did not have a meaningful ministry to assist them in coping with these challenges.

Method. This project examined the biblical principles on the origin, composition, and mission of the family, the socio-theoretical approaches to understand the family as an institution, and the Hispanic family in the United …

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between age, tenure of employment, level of administrative position, educational level, and personality type and the degree of self-expressed job satisfaction among female administrators in the National Education Association (NEA) and affiliate organizations. The total population of 181 female administrators employed at the National Education Association and its affiliates were surveyed. Each participant was mailed a survey packet containing a cover letter, a demographics sheet, and two questionnaires. Personality type was determined by scores on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator-Form G (1977). Demographic information was collected using the Survey of National …

Teamnet Ministries: An Empowerment Paradigm For Every-Member Ministry In The Hamlet Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Amelia, Ohio, Loren L. Fenton Jan 1998

Teamnet Ministries: An Empowerment Paradigm For Every-Member Ministry In The Hamlet Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Amelia, Ohio, Loren L. Fenton

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Hamlet Seventh-day Adventist Church, located near Amelia, Ohio, experienced a period of significant congregational decline during the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. Several contributing factors converged during this time frame to cause much discouragement and burn-out among the church members. Many left to join other congregations, or simply dropped out completely. Attendance dropped from the 120-150 range to an average of 35-40 at worship each Sabbath. By 1992 there was a serious leadership vacuum, coupled with a high level of mistrust, misunderstanding, and factional splintering permeating the church.

Method

In May 1992, I arrived as senior pastor for …

A Strategy For Guiding Pastors And Congregations Through A Church-Building Project In Bermuda Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Carlyle C. Simmons Jan 1998

A Strategy For Guiding Pastors And Congregations Through A Church-Building Project In Bermuda Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Carlyle C. Simmons

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Many times pastors in their ministry face the task of leading their congregations through a church-building project. Often with little to no formal preparation for such a task, pastors and congregations experience challenges and pressures not anticipated. Sometimes the magnitude and extent of these challenges and pressures produce an adverse effect on the morale and spiritual conditions of the pastor and congregation. Since the emphasis in the Adventist Church in Bermuda is on evangelism and mission, one can expect that there will be an ongoing need for church buildings. The development of this strategy for guiding the pastor and congregation …
