Women And Assisted Suicide: Exposing The Gender Vulnerability To Acquiescent Death, Lynne Marie Kohm, Britney N. Brigner Jan 1998

Women And Assisted Suicide: Exposing The Gender Vulnerability To Acquiescent Death, Lynne Marie Kohm, Britney N. Brigner

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that women are disproportionately vulnerable to assisted suicide due to societal, economic, and emotional factors, and that legalizing assisted suicide could exacerbate gender disparities in death rates. It critiques the lack of protections for vulnerable individuals, particularly women, who may be coerced or influenced into assisted suicide. The analysis emphasizes the need to address the root causes of suffering rather than resorting to assisted suicide, while also advocating for societal changes to support women and reduce their vulnerability.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg And The Virginia Military Institute: A Culmination Of Strategic Success, Scott M. Smiler Jan 1998

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg And The Virginia Military Institute: A Culmination Of Strategic Success, Scott M. Smiler

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines Justice Ginsburg's pivotal role in shaping the Supreme Court's approach to gender-based discrimination, particularly through her advocacy for heightened scrutiny of such classifications. It highlights how her efforts culminated in the landmark decision of United States v. Virginia, where the Court ruled that Virginia Military Institute's (VMI) exclusion of women violated the Equal Protection Clause. The decision reinforced the requirement that gender-based classifications must meet an exceedingly persuasive justification, aligning with Ginsburg's long-standing commitment to dismantling gender stereotypes and advancing equal protection principles.

Retribution Revisited: A Reconsideration Of Feminist Criminal Law Reform Strategies, Dianne L. Martin Jan 1998

Retribution Revisited: A Reconsideration Of Feminist Criminal Law Reform Strategies, Dianne L. Martin

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Were the last 30 years of feminist law reform activity around criminal justice misdirected? Or, if not misdirected, have the efforts been appropriated and manipulated by the New Right? This commentary reflects on this history, and on the failures of the retributive justice project generally, and argues for a reexamination of both. The discussion focuses on the tactics of the New Right and on the retributive goals of some victims' rights organizations as a means of highlighting the unintended consequences of key feminist initiatives around violence against women. Finally, the commentary identifies alternatives to retribution and a need for careful …

The Re-Election Of Incumbent Presidents : Wars, War Heroes, Patriots, And Prosperity, Brian Kelly Jan 1998

The Re-Election Of Incumbent Presidents : Wars, War Heroes, Patriots, And Prosperity, Brian Kelly

Honors Theses

In 1789 the fledgling nation of the United States of America unanimously elected its first president, a war hero named George Washington. In accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, Washington served a four-year term, at the completion of which he ran again for president. He won, and after four more years, was succeeded by his vice-president, John Adams, who defeated Thomas Jefferson to become the second president of the United States of America. Four years later Jefferson would turn the tables on his victor and defeat Adams to become the nation's third president.

An investigation of the seventeen successful …

Human Cesspools By Design?: The Inherent Contradiction In Public Housing, Melissa Calivis Green Jan 1998

Human Cesspools By Design?: The Inherent Contradiction In Public Housing, Melissa Calivis Green

Honors Papers

Many architects and planners neglect the complex relationship between spatial organization and the needs of a particular group. Following notions of Modernism as prescribed by architects such as Le Corbusier and Gropius, they believe instead in architectural determinism or the idea that architecture should dictate the social relationships of the residents through the design itself This paper will attempt to demonstrate that the "effective environment" or the totality of variables influencing behavior, such as crime and self perception, includes both the physical design and the social factors. The design and the social factors can not be separated from one another. …

Language And The Globalization Of The Economic Market: The Regulation Of Language As A Barrier To Free Trade, Stacy A. Feld Jan 1998

Language And The Globalization Of The Economic Market: The Regulation Of Language As A Barrier To Free Trade, Stacy A. Feld

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The European Union has devoted recent efforts to establishing an integrated global economy, free of barriers or hindrances, primarily through Article 30 of the Treaty Establishing the European Community, the central free movement of goods principle. By eliminating barriers to free trade, the European Union seeks to achieve a single globalized economy among its Member States. Not surprisingly, economic globalization in the European Union has given rise to an integration of political and cultural values among European nations. As a result of this "convergence of values," Member States have responded by enacting protectionist measures that reassert their regulatory autonomy over …

The Effects Of Gender And Task Complexity On Audit Judgment, Janne Chung, Gary S. Monroe Jan 1998

The Effects Of Gender And Task Complexity On Audit Judgment, Janne Chung, Gary S. Monroe

Research outputs pre 2011

This study examines the interaction effect between gender and task complexity on audit judgment based on the selectivity hypothesis. This hypothesis states that males are selective information processors whereas females are detailed information processors. The study extends this hypothesis to an auditing context and hypothesizes that males will outperform females when task complexity is low while females will outperform males when task complexity is high. A two (males and females) by two (task complexity - high and low) full factorial experiment was carried out. The low and high task complexity conditions were created by manipulating the number of cues. The …

The Interactive Effects Of Different Accounting Controls On Subordinates' Behaviour And Performance, Chong M. Lau Jan 1998

The Interactive Effects Of Different Accounting Controls On Subordinates' Behaviour And Performance, Chong M. Lau

Research outputs pre 2011

Prior research suggests that goal setting and an emphasis en meeting tight budget targets may influence the extent of subordinates' performance and slack creation. This study hypothesizes that other accounting controls may moderate these relationships. Specifically, it hypothesizes that: (i) budgetary performance is increased and (ii) budgetary slack creation is decreased when an emphasis on setting and meeting tight budget targets is complemented with a high extent of cost control. The results support a significant two-way interaction between Emphasis on setting and meeting tight budget targets and Cost control affecting budgetary performance. A significant two-way interaction between Emphasis en setting …

Development Of A Systems Approach To Planning, Design And Operations Of Intermodal Passenger Transfer Facilities To Increase The Mobility And Safety Of Older Travelers., Mohammad Anwarul Karim Jan 1998

Development Of A Systems Approach To Planning, Design And Operations Of Intermodal Passenger Transfer Facilities To Increase The Mobility And Safety Of Older Travelers., Mohammad Anwarul Karim

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

America, as a society, is aging. Currently, 13% of the population is 65 years of age or older. This percentage is expected to rise to 21% by 2030. Since older travelers frequently suffer from one or more age-related physical and/or information handling decrements, they often have problems using intermodal passenger transfer facilities. The overall goal of this study was to develop a framework which can provide an approach to identify older traveler issues associated with intermodal passenger transfer facilities and serve to guide planning and engineering improvements to intermodal passenger transfer facilities to increase the safety and mobility of older …

Leaving The Door Ajar: The Supreme Court And Assisted Suicide, Melvin I. Urofsky Jan 1998

Leaving The Door Ajar: The Supreme Court And Assisted Suicide, Melvin I. Urofsky

University of Richmond Law Review

In June, 1997, the Supreme Court ruled that a constitutional right to assisted suicide exists in neither the Due Process nor the Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment. But while a federal right does not exist, the Court made it quite clear that the states had ample leeway in which to fashion law on this issue; moreover, the concurring opinions of five Justices strongly implied that, should the states enact legislation that would severely limit end-of-life choices, the Supreme Court would revisit the issue. Far from slamming the door shut on assisted suicide, the Court left it more than …

Will Inquiry Produce Action? Studying The Effects Of Gender In The Federal Courts, Lynn Hecht Schafran Jan 1998

Will Inquiry Produce Action? Studying The Effects Of Gender In The Federal Courts, Lynn Hecht Schafran

University of Richmond Law Review

When the Ninth Circuit Gender Bias Task Force released its report at the Circuit's 1992 Judicial Conference, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor offered this perspective:

A couple of years ago, I gave a speech in which I discussed the existence of a glass ceiling for women. The next day, headlines and newspaper articles trumpeted my statements as if I had made a surprising new discovery. But it is now 1992, and I don't think most of us were surprised to learn that the [Ninth Circuit] Task Force found the exis- tence of gender bias in a federal circuit. After all, over …

Cinderella, Marie Antoinette, And Sara: Roles And Role Models In A Little Princess, Elisabeth Rose Gruner Jan 1998

Cinderella, Marie Antoinette, And Sara: Roles And Role Models In A Little Princess, Elisabeth Rose Gruner

English Faculty Publications

Role-model criticism, the easiest and often most logical form of criticism for children’s literature, has fallen out of favor in our more theoretically sophisticated times. Toril Moi, surveying the state of feminist criticism in 1985, devoted a chapter to “Images of Women” criticism, finding it overly prescriptive and frequently self-contradictory in its calls for a “realistic” or accurate depiction of women’s lives simultaneously with the desire for “strong, impressive female characters” (47). Since many real women (and men!) are neither strong nor impressive, the effort is doomed from the start. And the specific call for “role models” is problematic in …

Baby Boomers' Feelings On The Relationship Between Price And Quality, Rebecca A. Hudzik-Presson Jan 1998

Baby Boomers' Feelings On The Relationship Between Price And Quality, Rebecca A. Hudzik-Presson

Theses

This thesis will focus on the study of Baby Boomers and the impact their particular generation has upon the type of products they purchase.

Marketing research has indicated that generational data can be very helpful. Generational factors provide a framework for understanding the marketplace. Many marketers who want to appeal to Baby Boomers attempt to recognize what interests Boomers. A fundamental truth is that marketers who take into account age group have an important competitive advantage over those who do not.

Research has also indicated that Baby Boomers show some loyalty to brand names. They look at quality as a …
