The Priene Synagogue Community And Jewish Diaspora Prominence In Late Antique Cities, Amari Pavati May 2026

The Priene Synagogue Community And Jewish Diaspora Prominence In Late Antique Cities, Amari Pavati

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The late antique synagogue of Priene, like other synagogues in the region and potentially beyond, acted as an “urban center” for the community it served. I argue that the urban context of diaspora synagogues like the Priene synagogue has been under explored, and that analysis of Jewish communities within their changing urban contexts reveals the place of Jewish communities within late antique society. Synagogues served multiple functions for their communities, some visible from archaeological evidence and other known from textual evidence. The Priene synagogue, for example, was laid out and artistically decorated to mark the central, sacred nave as separate …

“Sink Or Swim” : Autonomy And Hustle Culture As Products Of Negotiations Between Restaurant Servers And Restaurant Structure, Coco Ridge

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Industrial and white-collar work has been thoroughly examined as exploitative and alienating in the sociological study of work. As the nature of work rapidly evolves, service work has emerged as the dominant sector of the economy. The literature identifies significant structural differences in service work, which complicate the historical understanding of workers’ experiences. Existing food service ethnographies have found that workers ultimately experienced autonomy in their work across varying conditions. I seek to examine how restaurant servers experience their work within the restaurant structure. This ethnography examines a large brewery in Orange County, CA, drawing on four months of detailed …

To support this investigation, we designed a visual survey system called “The Disco Ball." Evaluating work ethics, lifestyles, behaviors, and communication styles, students were initially assigned to project teams using one of three conditions: (1) random assignment (control), (2) a “most matches” condition maximizing similarity between students, and (3) a “diverse communication styles” condition designed to balance differing interaction preferences. After an initial collaboration period, students were given the opportunity …
