Book Review: Backstage Domains: Playing "William Tell" In Two Swiss Communities, Donald G. Tritt
Book Review: Backstage Domains: Playing "William Tell" In Two Swiss Communities, Donald G. Tritt
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Written by a folklore scholar, this book is a detailed, behind-the-scenes account of the many aspects required for staging Schiller's play, William Tell. To accomplish this, the author undertakes a comparative approach by studying production of the play in two Swiss communities, Altdorf and Interlaken - communities the author sees as "culturally distinct and each embodying different values of Swiss society." The author notes that Altdorf tends to be the guardian of Tell's memory while Interlaken functions at the forefront of Swiss tourism. Separate chapters on each of these two Swiss communities provides an interesting historical account of the area …

Book Review: The American Century: Varieties Of Culture In Modern Times, Fred Jordan
Book Review: The American Century: Varieties Of Culture In Modern Times, Fred Jordan
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Western civilization today is very technologically proficient but lacks the dynamic and creative ideas needed to launch a new cultural revolution. Bereft of a unique vision, our post-modern culture nostalgically borrows from the past, mining especially the gems of modernism. This exciting book by Norman F. Cantor, Professor of History, Sociology and Comparative History at New York University, is replete with such incisive observations. The work covers the whole gamut of twentieth century cultural history. Its core is a stimulating chapter on modernism which includes literature, theater, dance, drama, music, the visual arts, the social and behavioral sciences, history, theology, …

The Embodiment Of Responsibility: “Confession” And “Compensation” In Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea, Andrew Strathern, Pamela J. Stewart
The Embodiment Of Responsibility: “Confession” And “Compensation” In Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea, Andrew Strathern, Pamela J. Stewart
Pacific Studies
We discuss two contexts of responsibility for action in Mount Hagen, confession and compensation. Verbal confessions of either wrongdoing or resentment against wrongdoing are important signs of the exercise of agency, but if they are not made, it is expected that sickness will result. “Substance” thus takes over where “agency” fails, and the two are intimately linked. Compensation payments can be seen as nonverbal equivalents of confession or the logical result of it, and if they are not paid, sickness or a failure of wounds to heal is thought to be likely as a result. In contemporary times both confession …

Sustainability And Resource Assessment: A Case Study Of Soil Resources In The United States, Dana L. Hoag, Jennie S. Hughes Popp, D. Eric Hyatt
Sustainability And Resource Assessment: A Case Study Of Soil Resources In The United States, Dana L. Hoag, Jennie S. Hughes Popp, D. Eric Hyatt
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Assessment of environmental condition is critical to wise management and policy decisions. However, for some concerns such as sustainability, it is difficult to assess environmental condition because it involves disparate social objectives and an understanding of complex ecological systems. Here, a general framework is proposed to examine sustainability of environmental resources in objective, measurable ways. By using soil quality as an example, sustainability research is taken beyond theory and into application.
Sustainability depends on the quality of resource endowment. Endowment of a natural resource can be modeled as an index of quality to assess the degree of sustainable management. This …

The History And Future Of Private Education In The United States, Charles L. Glenn
The History And Future Of Private Education In The United States, Charles L. Glenn
Journal of Catholic Education
In the early Republic, no simple distinction between public and private schools existed. With the advent of the common school, a system of government-sponsored schools emerged. Hostility to nonpublic schools, especially Catholic ones, developed because of the fear that they would undermine the foundation of civil and political order. This hostility has historically been expressed through regulation and denial of funding. Currently, private schools are experiencing a more favorable public attitude because of a widespread disillusionment with public schools. The future of private schools depends on how faithfully they express a distinctive and worthy character to their institutions.
Community Service Learning Increases Communication Skills Across The Business Curriculum, Mary L. Tucker, Anne M. Mccarthy, John A. Hoxmeier, Margarita M. Lenk
Community Service Learning Increases Communication Skills Across The Business Curriculum, Mary L. Tucker, Anne M. Mccarthy, John A. Hoxmeier, Margarita M. Lenk
Higher Education
Community service learning offers a unique and rewarding way for business students to reinforce communication capabilities while developing lifelong career and social skills. This article defines community service learning, discusses its importance to business as well as higher education, and describes three community service learning projects. Students in these projects taught elementary students, designed a computer system for a community nonprofit, and developed accounting systems for university divisions. In doing so, they enhanced their understanding of classroom theories and communication skills through service-learning.

The Implementation Of Group Mentoring Between At-Risk Teenage African American Males And Successful Adult African American Men, Cornell Mathis
The Implementation Of Group Mentoring Between At-Risk Teenage African American Males And Successful Adult African American Men, Cornell Mathis
Masters Theses
Little research has been done to examine the implementation of group mentoring. This study of group mentoring involving at-risk teenage African American males and successful adult African American men will provide insight into group mentoring as demonstrated through interpersonal communications.
An investigation of the composite reduction provides the foundation for establishing the following definition of the group mentoring experience. The mentees are drawn to the mentors by mutual respect developed through the use of a special language. Availability leads to bonding between the mentees and mentors. The relationships are fostered by the authenticity of both individuals while producing social enlightenment …
