Parallel Linear Congruential Generators With Prime Moduli, Michael Mascagni Jun 1998

Parallel Linear Congruential Generators With Prime Moduli, Michael Mascagni

Faculty Publications

Linear congruential generators (LCGs) remain the most popular method of pseudorandom number generation on digital computers. Ease of implementation has favored implementing LCGs with power-of-two moduli. However, prime modulus LCGs are superior in quality to power-of-two modulus LCGs, and the use of a Mersenne prime minimizes the computational cost of generation. When implemented for parallel computation, quality becomes an even more compelling issue. We use a full-period exponential sum as the measure of stream independence and present a method for producing provably independent streams of LCGs in parallel by utilizing an explicit parameterization of all of the primitive elements module …

A Kierkegaardian Understanding Of Self And Society: An Existential Sociology, Chris L. Jakway Jun 1998

A Kierkegaardian Understanding Of Self And Society: An Existential Sociology, Chris L. Jakway

Dissertations

In examining the history and development of existential sociology, it becomes clear that in its initial phases it was not intended to oppose traditional sociological research, but to complement it. I intend to show that the contemporary chasm between the methodologies can be narrowed with a reconsideration of their common roots in the work of G.H. Mead and the symbolic interactionists. Existential sociologists today offer a practical synthesis that combines that theoretical heritage with philosophic ontology dating back to the writings of Soren Kierkegaard.

My conceptual goal is reveal how the existential philosophy of Kierkegaard, while not irrational or solipsistic, …

The Influence Of Promise Keepers On Fathers’ Involvement With Their Children, Michael J. Walcheski Jun 1998

The Influence Of Promise Keepers On Fathers’ Involvement With Their Children, Michael J. Walcheski

Dissertations

This study explores the influence of Promise Keepers (PK) on fathers’ involvement with their children. The large numbers o f men involved with PK and the anecdotal success of fathers and their families have created considerable dialogue in the popular press. However, there have been no empirical studies to date that contribute data about the influence of PK on father involvement.

The conceptual framework informing this study combined father involvement and postmodern feminist perspectives. A father involvement perspective emphasizes fathers’ presence, their capability and strengths, the moral dimension to fathers’ responsibility for their children, and factors that establish responsible fathering. …

Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Doctoral Students Mentoring Relationships With Faculty In Counseling Psychology A Qualitative Study, Julianne S. Lark Jun 1998

Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Doctoral Students Mentoring Relationships With Faculty In Counseling Psychology A Qualitative Study, Julianne S. Lark

Dissertations

Mentoring is often endorsed within broader discussions of the education and training of students in counseling and psychology (e.g., Ellis, 1992; Gelso & Fretz, 1992; Kilburg, 1991), although, there is very little in the professional literature about these relationships (Carden, 1990). Out of the small amount of professional training literature on lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) issues, Buhrke and Douce (1991) have provided the only discussion of counseling psychology trainees who themselves are LGB. There are no other published sources that discuss the practice of mentoring with LGB students in counseling psychology.

This qualitative study investigated (LGB) doctoral students’ mentoring …

The Relationship Of Gender Role Conflict To Male College Students' Receipt And Use Of Violence In Heterosexual Dating Relationships, Brady R. Harnishfeger Jun 1998

The Relationship Of Gender Role Conflict To Male College Students' Receipt And Use Of Violence In Heterosexual Dating Relationships, Brady R. Harnishfeger

Dissertations

This dissertation assessed the relationship of attitudes toward aggression, dating relationship seriousness, and aspects of men's conflicted beliefs and expectations about the male role to involvement in physically violent dating relationships. Grounded in conflict theory, which states that conflict is an integral part of all close relationships, this research hypothesized that more accepting attitudes toward aggressian, more serious dating relationships, higher levels of concerns with success, power, and competition, and greater tendencies toward restrictive emotionality would be related to, and would combine to represent significant predictors of, men's receipt and use of physically violent conflict tactics while dating.

The sample …

Prediction Of Discharge Destination From Initial Physical Therapy Assessment Using The Physical Assessment Key (Pak), Wendy L. Chung, Kimberly A. Vieten

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine if a patient’s discharge destination could be predicted by information available upon the physical therapy initial evaluation using the Physical Assessment Key (PAK). There were 141 subjects (58 male, 83 female) included in this study and their ages ranged from 19 to 89 years (mean age=57.1 years). Each subject was given a PAK score on the day of the initial physical therapy evaluation and on the day of discharge from the hospital. The PAK evaluates a patient in the areas of transfer activities, self-care activities, locomotion and excretion management. A patient was …

The Relationship Between Tamoxifen And Depressive Symptoms In Women With Breast Cancer, Terry Marie Lynn Jun 1998

The Relationship Between Tamoxifen And Depressive Symptoms In Women With Breast Cancer, Terry Marie Lynn

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine whether women with breast cancer and the presence of the drug tamoxifen, are more severely depressed than women with breast cancer and the absence of tamoxifen. Average Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scores did not differ between the two sub-groups; however, two significant group differences were found. First, 10 women in the tamoxifen group had scores of zero (versus 4 in the absence of prescribed tamoxifen group). Research has shown that scores of zero do not always reflect an absence of depression. Second, the most severely depressed women (BDI scores in the 25 …

Mediation And Multicultural Reality, Michelle Lebaron Jun 1998

Mediation And Multicultural Reality, Michelle Lebaron

Peace and Conflict Studies

Excerpt

Mediation and multiculturalism arise from separate histories and serve different ends. Mediation is a collaborative alternative to the legal system for resolving all kinds of conflicts. Multiculturalism is the philosophy and practice of honouring cultural difference through developing systems that institutionalize pluralism (Roberts and Clifton, 1990). While each of these ideas have animated programs and literatures, little attention was given to the connections between them until the early nineties.1 Since that time, conflict resolution systems and processes have been scrutinized for embedded cultural values and implications for who is included and excluded. Training programs in mediation have progressed …

Impact Analysis Of Farm Finance Workshops, Gregory Hanson, Robert Parsons, Wesley Musser, Lehan Power Jun 1998

Impact Analysis Of Farm Finance Workshops, Gregory Hanson, Robert Parsons, Wesley Musser, Lehan Power

Journal of Extension

As a means of providing financial management outreach to Northeast farmers, 6-day workshops were conducted with a format consisting of video and satellite presentations, individual exercises, homework, and graded exams. Educational impacts, defined as the change in net worth resulting from participant application of management tools taught, were surveyed at the close of the workshops. The level of educational impact averaged about 4% of gross farm income. Farmers with only a grade school education achieved the highest proportional increase in comprehension of financial statements and financial planning. Impact value in proportion to gross income was highest among this group. Those …

Review Of The Harlot By The Side Of The Road: Forbidden Tales Of The Bible, By Jonathan Kirsch, Sidnie White Crawford Jun 1998

Review Of The Harlot By The Side Of The Road: Forbidden Tales Of The Bible, By Jonathan Kirsch, Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

Many modern readers think of the Bible as a "dry and preachy" book, not having much sympathy for the all-too-human passions of sex, violence and greed. In this book, Jonathan Kirsch, author, book columnist for the Los Angeles Times and practicing lawyer, attempts to change that impression, to reveal the Bible's fullness in recounting human complexity. In the process, Kirsch hopes "to take back the Bible from the strict and censorious people who wave it in our faces and to restore it to the worldly man or woman who will appreciate the flesh-and-blood passions that are described in the Holy …
