The Socialization Of Indian Scientific Writers Into Western Scientific Discourse Communities., Sumita Roy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research studies the socialization of Indian science writers into western discourse communities. More specifically, it seeks to identify the writing problems that beginner Indian science writers face and the strategies that they adopt in overcoming them while writing dissertations or research articles. Primary information was gathered by interviewing 11 Indian graduate students and 17 faculty members from India (West Bengal) and the USA on the basis of a five-page questionnaire. Respondents were classified into three groups according to their places of training and writing skills. Three to five sets of rough drafts from each group were studied to note …

The Effects Of Gender And Race On Physician Treatment Of Patient Emotion., Vaughn A. Decoster Jan 1998

The Effects Of Gender And Race On Physician Treatment Of Patient Emotion., Vaughn A. Decoster

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study established theoretical and empirical foundations for the investigation into how physicians deal with (treat) patient emotion. The questions posed, "Do physicians employ specific strategies to treat patient emotion?" and "What are the effects of physician-patient social characteristics (gender and race) on emotion treatment?" Coalescing two seemingly incongruent perspectives (social constructionism and Kemper's social relational theory), I clarified the conceptual basis for the emotion management of other people. From these perspectives, I developed a three stage theory to describe and explain the physician treatment of patient emotion (triaging, diagnosing, and treatment), as well as appreciate the effects of social …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study was designed to explore the status of learning types of clinical laboratory science university faculty and their use of information technology in the classroom. Traditionally clinical laboratory science education has been lecture and lab sessions. However, with the advent of the information age, professors are moving from the role of lecturer to facilitator. Some professors are in tune with the new information tools while others are not interested at all. This research had a two-fold purpose: (1) to explore who was using technology in the classroom and identify what they were using, and (2) to search for a …

Administering The Hybrid Department: A National Survey Of Combined Communications/Theatre Arts Departments, Ellen Halperin-Royer

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The article presents a study which aims to discover characteristics of hybrid speech/theatre departments that describe themselves as highly cooperative and collegial. To test the hypothesis that departments that are highly integrated between disciplines enjoy higher degrees of cooperation than departments where the disciplines function independently, a national survey of combined speech/theatre departments was conducted. The first procedure was a mail survey, which was followed by a telephone survey. The mail questionnaire began with a question regarding the types of degrees offered by the department. The survey then included a series of yes/no questions pertaining to the degree of integration …

The Influence Of Perceived Social Support On Loneliness Among Students Of Foreign Status Studying In The United States, Brian Vakoc

Theses

Loneliness is a common experience for individuals studying in foreign countries. Where cultures, communications, and social structures are unfamiliar feelings of loneliness can present a difficult component within the adjustment process. Social support has a direct influence on a person's ability to adjust to an unfamiliar environment. Feelings of loneliness experienced by a person can be attributed to that person's perception of social support. Students who are studying in the United States from abroad are subject to a multitude of unfamiliar environments that promote uncertain social supports and increased levels of loneliness. Community Connections Kit: Practical Materials For Involving Your Community In Character-Building, Wise Skills Resources

Guides

Many recognize that there is a crisis in American schools today. School violence rates are increasing. Test scores are plummeting in many areas. High dropout rates continue to plague numerous school districts. And our prisons are bursting with men and women who have failed in school. While school districts and state governments wrestle with making our educational system effective, schools are faced with mounting social problems that cannot be solved by merely teaching academic skills.

Service Learning: A Creative Strategy For Inclusive Classrooms, Pamela J. Gent, Louis E. Gurecka

Disabilities

The movement for full inclusion is often hindered by the lack of creative and alternative teaching methodologies in regular classrooms. Service learning not only offers an alternative to traditional classroom teaching methods, it is also a vehicle to provide inclusive community based instruction, to promote the development of communities and to provide functional skills training. This paper defines service learning and its components while also discussing applicability of service learning for all students.

Dress For Success: Can Uniforms Enhance Learning For The Middle School Child?, Steven E. Wymore Jan 1998

Dress For Success: Can Uniforms Enhance Learning For The Middle School Child?, Steven E. Wymore

Graduate Research Papers

The hot topic of uniforms in public schools has been of great interest in recent years. Many believe uniforms can help the middle school child learn better. Some would use it to control violence and gang activities in schools. Others would use it to promote pride and academic achievement. Some say it would cut costs for needy families, and cut competition with clothing styles. Those who oppose school uniforms contend there is a lack of firm data to support a "fad" such as this with uniforms. Instead, dress codes should be enforced and maintained. Some people feel uniforms give a …

Self-Esteem And Alcohol Involvement Among Female College Students: Is There A Relationship?, Marla Stephanie Slack

Theses

Although current research has studied t he relationship between self-esteem and alcohol involvement among college students, the results have been inconclusive. The majority of studies have used either the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory or the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale to establish the level of self-esteem in their subjects. This study attempted to further previous research by using an alternative measure of self-esteem. Undergraduate female students (under the legal drinking age of 21) were randomly selected from Introductory Psychology classes at a midwestern university. Each subject completed the Self- Esteem Rating Scale (SERS) and the Index of Alcohol Involvement (IAI ) instrument . …

Neonaticide And The "Ethos Of Maternity": Traditional Criminal Law Defenses And The Novel Syndrome, Judith E. Macfarlane Jan 1998

Neonaticide And The "Ethos Of Maternity": Traditional Criminal Law Defenses And The Novel Syndrome, Judith E. Macfarlane

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note explores the legal and psychological dimensions of neonaticide, proposing the recognition of a Neonaticide Syndrome to better understand the mental state of perpetrators and inform legal defenses. It argues that such a syndrome, characterized by denial of pregnancy and psychotic breaks, could provide a framework for lenient sentencing and negate intent in homicide charges, similar to how Rape Trauma Syndrome and Battered Woman Syndrome are used in court. The analysis emphasizes the need for expert testimony to explain the mental state of defendants and the admissibility of such evidence under Frye and Daubert standards.
