A Proposal For The Development Of Fort Hays State University Service Learning Program, Dan Kahl
A Proposal For The Development Of Fort Hays State University Service Learning Program, Dan Kahl
Higher Education
"Service Learning" is quickly becoming a style of education that is recognized for its' effectiveness and practical benefits. Linking class curriculum with hands-on applications is often referred to as "experiential education". Service Learning is a form of experiential education identified by an equal emphasis on academic learning and service to others. The combination of focusing on meeting community needs, identifying learning objectives, and intentionally reflecting on what is being learned makes service learning different from plain volunteerism or community service.

Fresh Focus: Before Archives: Margaret Cross Norton's Childhood, Education, And Early Career, Donnelly Lancaster
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
Too often the pressure of the present-day work environment lures archivists into ignoring their professional past ot advancing shortsightedly into the future. To encourage such reflection on the archival enterprise, Provenance includes this section, Fresh Focus. We invite contnl>utors to explore neglected chapters in archival history or to share an original, especially historical, perspective on the current world of archival affairs. Provenance particularly encourages submissions for Fresh Focus from new or student archivists who are, after all, the future of the profession. Following is the second in a series of occasional essays or papers meeting these criteria.
Female Medical Residents And Stress: Origins, Impacts, And Coping Responses, Brenda Mcgehee Smith
Female Medical Residents And Stress: Origins, Impacts, And Coping Responses, Brenda Mcgehee Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Stress research studies of medical residents in the 1970s and 1980s found that female residents cope less well than male residents. Coping strategies, as well as origins and impact of stress, of 12 female residents were examined in the contexts of their environment. This qualitative ethnographic study was organized around the transactional cognitive theory of stress and coping. Female residents coped well, with use of a variety of strong support relationships, and were creative and flexible in combining their personal and professional lives. The quality of interpersonal communication and support, rather than the existence, appeared to have the greatest effect …

Prediction Of Recidivism From Batterer Characteristics And Prior Arrest Records, Denise Ukleja '98
Prediction Of Recidivism From Batterer Characteristics And Prior Arrest Records, Denise Ukleja '98
Honors Projects
A variety of batterer characteristics, such as witnessing parental violence as a child, alcohol/drug use, and a prior legal history, have been found to be correlated with domestic violence. Initial research on recidivism has also suggested that these characteristics are correlated with recidivism and, thus, may be used as possible predictor variables. This study explored the relationship between a number of batterer characteristics and recidivism within a sample of batterers involved in a domestic violence treatment program. Of the psychosocial variables explored as possible predictors, only witnessing of parental violence as a child was a significant predictor. In addition, analyses …

Welfare "Reform": Com'in' Up On The Rough Side Of The Mountain, Loretta J. Williams, Roland Ward, Attieno Davis
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Through the lens of an innovative community-university partnership in the Greater Boston region, the authors analyze how welfare reform organizing overtook a resident-driven empowerment project. Since a major goal of the Chelsea/Dudley Partnership in MA is to support residents in exerting greater power over the practices and policies of community agencies, projects have been initiated in the city of Chelsea and the Dudley neighborhood of Boston to organize, and to strengthen, low income women by training them as welfare advocates. This paper examines how the efforts evolved, and how the community and the university partners are playing a key role …

Thirty - nine such assets were identified as being possessed by at least one of the student populations. These data can be used to help develop programs which can prevent adolescents from engaging in high - risk behaviors such as early …

Evaluation Of The Community Living Adaptation Scale, Jane M. Morris
Masters Theses
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the CLAS. Seventy-three subjects participated from mental health case management agencies. The reliability coefficient for internal consistency o f the CLAS was .82. CLAS was compared to the Global Assessment of Functioning scale using the Pearson’s correlation. Convergent validity was significant to the .36 level indicating a significant relationship at the .01 level. The Self Profile Scale (SPS) was developed by this researcher as a parallel scale to compare the client’s perceptions to the case manager perceptions regarding functional status level. Item to item comparison of the CLAS and SPS indicated similar …

Correlation Of Emergency Department Nurses' Beliefs About Wife Abuse And The Use Of Carative Factors In Transpersonal Interactions With Abused Wives, Judith A. Baker
Masters Theses
Emergency department nurses from seven general hospitals were surveyed to elicit information on their beliefs about wife abuse (using the Inventory of Beliefs about Wife-Beating) and their self-reported behaviors with clients who may be physically abused. They were asked about beliefs about institutional and peer attitudes toward caring for abused wives. Information on the nurses’ education about and experience with wife abuse was gathered. Data were summarized to provide descriptive statistics regarding beliefs and behaviors. High levels of caring behaviors were reported. Analysis of correlation between beliefs and behaviors was conducted. Significant findings were correlations between caring behaviors and the …
