The Feasibility Of Transferring Clean Technology From The United States To China : A Case Study From The Paper Industry, He Ning

Theses

In their pursuit of economic development, many developing countries are causing pollution at an alarming rate. One solution to the problem is the use of clean technology. Some developed countries have created various manufacture technologies which result in pollution prevention. There is a need for the transfer of clean technology from the developed countries to developing countries. It is beneficial to study the feasibility of such transfer.

The manufacturing processes of the paper industry are selected for this study. An investigation and comparison was conducted in order to evaluate the feasibility of clean technology transfer from the United States to …

A Typology For Understanding The Role Of Information As A Source Of Value Creation In The Emerging Information Economy, J. Mcintosh, Keng Siau Aug 1998

A Typology For Understanding The Role Of Information As A Source Of Value Creation In The Emerging Information Economy, J. Mcintosh, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Today’s economy is increasingly driven by the integration of information in many aspects of business. Greater information intensity in industries such as hospital supply and express package delivery is causing a fundamental transformation in the way firms conduct business, the menu of competitive choices that they are faced with, and the need to continuously keep ahead of competitors. Information driven businesses appear to adopt several competitive or operating innovations. These include: mass customization or the creation of customized products which offer virtually individualized products to customers in mass markets (Pine, 1993); disintermediation or the creation of direct links between producers …

Scholarship Unbound For The 21st Century, Cj Weiser, Lyla Houglum

Journal of Extension

In 1995 Oregon State University defined scholarship as creative intellectual work that is validated by peers and communicated. The university revised its promotion and tenure guidelines to reflect this broad view and to recognize scholarly achievements across all university missions including teaching and outreach. In the same year the university made organizational changes to reflect its commitment to extending education beyond the campus. An important change moved the tenure homes for all Extension faculty members from Extension to academic departments and colleges. Specific implications of these fundamental changes in how and by whom faculty members are evaluated, tenured, and promoted …

Intercultural Training For Global Organisations, Irene Matin Rubio Jul 1998

Intercultural Training For Global Organisations, Irene Matin Rubio

IIMB Management Review

Liberalisation has seen many economies, especially in Asia, opening their hitherto sheltered domestic markets to global competition and providing greater opportunities to trade and foreign investment. The spinoffs of liberalisation bring in new implications, opportunities and challenges for the governments as well as the organisations involved. Round Table features some of the issues discussed in the conference on 'Managing Economic Liberalisation in South Asia : Directions for the 21st Century' held in Chennai, India, from August 10 -13. Selvarajah examines the realignment of economies towards globalisation as a development of regionalism. The shift in economic forces away from multilateral arrangements …

Organization Change And Vinification Cooperatives In France's Midi, Trevor C. Knox Jul 1998

Organization Change And Vinification Cooperatives In France's Midi, Trevor C. Knox

Economics Working Papers

Standard accounts of French industrialization blame the predominance of the traditional family firm for France s failure to adopt or to pioneer modern production methods. Economic historians could easily interpret the cave cooperative vinicole as evidence that corroborates this explanation for inefficiency in French agriculture and industry. The cave cooperative preserved the idiosyncrasies that attend fragmented land tenure at the expense of governance costs and incentive problems associated with cooperative ownership and control. These apparent barriers to rationalized production notwithstanding, this paper claims that the cooperative was a progressive organizational structure that adapted winegrowers in southern France to the emerging …

Meta-Ethnographic Development Of A Dialogue Methodology Applied To Organization Discourse, Shelley P. Gallup Jul 1998

Meta-Ethnographic Development Of A Dialogue Methodology Applied To Organization Discourse, Shelley P. Gallup

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A gap exists between theoretical stances that acknowledge the importance of dialogue as a dynamic within socially constructed structures, and "steersmanship" of those constructs--e.g., directing, intervening or transforming organizations. A "mechanism" which links theory with practice is missing, leaving practitioners with an acknowledgment of dialogue's central position, but without tools to enact this centrality in practice or research. This research constructs a conceptual model of dialogue, derived from the literature. Using this model as a base, the research seeks to generate a dialogue methodology bridging theory and practice with respect to organizational dialogue. The model, methodology, and research results are …

Nonlethality And American Land Power: Strategic Context And Operational Concepts, Douglas C. Lovelace Professor, Steven Metz Dr. Jun 1998

Nonlethality And American Land Power: Strategic Context And Operational Concepts, Douglas C. Lovelace Professor, Steven Metz Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Nonlethal technology, concepts and doctrine may provide the Army a way to retain its political utility and military effectiveness in a security environment characterized by ambiguity and the glare of world public opinion. To explore this, the Army is undertaking programs and initiatives which may make it the driving force in nonlethality. The authors place nonlethality within its larger strategic context and explain how it is related to the revolution in military affairs. They then assess the arguments for and against the integration of nonlethality into American doctrine and procedures. Finally, they offer operational concepts which could serve as the …

Is The Vice President Of My Work Organization A Principle-Centered Leader?, S Robert Smith May 1998

Is The Vice President Of My Work Organization A Principle-Centered Leader?, S Robert Smith

Theses and Graduate Projects

This case study focuses on the leadership theory used by the Vice President (VP) of a 500 employee organization within a large multinational corporation. The problem addressed is whether this VP is a principle-centered leader. This is a leadership theory championed by Stephen R. Covey. The Covey Leadership Center works with thousands of organizations throughout the world to educate them on principle-centered leadership. Although the available literature is limited to Covey, the similarities to ethical leadership theory are addressed in the literature review. Data collected from researcher observations experience, and interviews is evaluated against principle-centered leadership criteria. This evaluation and …

The Search For A New Regulatory Paradigm, Michael Taylor May 1998

The Search For A New Regulatory Paradigm, Michael Taylor

Mercer Law Review

The regulation of financial services in developed economies has not kept pace with the enormous changes that the industry has experienced over the last two decades. Despite the rapid integration of financial services across a number of different boundaries--geographical, functional, and sectoral-regulation remains rooted in a set of assumptions dating back to the 1930s. I term these assumptions and their associated institutional and legislative embodiment a "regulatory paradigm." In this Article, I argue that the traditional regulatory paradigm has become outmoded as the result of recent industrial developments and that this necessitates the creation of a new regulatory paradigm. This …

Empowerment Of A Uaw Workforce, Paula L. Hughel May 1998

Empowerment Of A Uaw Workforce, Paula L. Hughel

Theses

This thesis will investigate whether empowerment of a workforce has a positive correlation on employee job satisfaction.

Research supports that the automotive industry is continuously focusing on the reduction of structural costs. One area that is commonly focused on is the reduction of manpower, specifically management. As the number of managers are reduced some of the work is being redistributed to the employees. Along with the additional work comes decision making responsibilities.

Although research supports that empowerment has a positive correlation on business results and working environments, it is inconclusive that empowerment has a positive correlation relative to job satisfaction. …

Environmental Change And Management Staffing: An Empirical Examination Of The Electric Utilities Industry, Ram Subramanian, Carol M. Sanchez May 1998

Environmental Change And Management Staffing: An Empirical Examination Of The Electric Utilities Industry, Ram Subramanian, Carol M. Sanchez

Peer Reviewed Articles

This paper examines the relationship between environmental change, changes in competitive dynamics, and top management staffing in the electric utilities industry during the period surrounding the passage of the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct 92). The findings suggest that following the passage of the EPAct 92, competition in the electric utilities industry intensified placing greater emphasis on achieving internal, firm-level efficiencies. This external environmental change and the corresponding shift in the competitive context resulted in an adjustment in the composition of the top management coalition in these firms. The dominant coalition following the EPAct 92 consisted of older managers …
