The south-western Woolbelt receives annual rainfall between 500-700 mm with long dry summers and cool wet winters. The dominant land use is grazing of Merino sheep for wool productiion, with smaller areas (5-15%) of cropping. All of the catchments selected were affected by salinity, but the extent and severity varied. In all catchments the location of the major expression of salinity was the valley floor.

7. Thermal Diagenesis Of Cretaceous Sediment Recovered At The Cote D’Ivoire – Ghana Transform Margin, Mary Anne Holmes
7. Thermal Diagenesis Of Cretaceous Sediment Recovered At The Cote D’Ivoire – Ghana Transform Margin, Mary Anne Holmes
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The early opening of the South Atlantic ocean along the eastern Romanche Fracture Zone, including an initial phase of transform faulting and pull-apart basin formation, followed by the generation of a seafloor spreading center, was investigated during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 159 to the Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana continental margin. Clay minerals in the <0.5-μm fraction of tectonically disturbed sediment recovered during this leg were analyzed by X-ray diffraction to determine the extent of thermal diagenesis caused by the passing of the South Atlantic spreading center along this transform margin, and to date the passing. Results from Sites 959-961 reveal mild thermal alteration of clays, to paleotemperatures of 120°–170°C, in older, mostly undated sediment, in response to an elevated paleogeothermal gradient, as indicated by the absence of randomly interstratified illite/smectite group clays (R = 0 I/S clay), and the presence of dominant regularly interstratified (R = 1) I/S clay. Thermally altered sediment at these sites underlie unaltered sediment with likely erosional contacts. Based on a date of nannofossil biozone CC9b for the oldest unaltered sediment at Site 959, the thermal event there must have been pre-CC9b.
At Site 962, drilled on a minor marginal ridge to the west of Sites 959–961, heat has altered clay in basal sediment to R = 1 I/S, and the transition uphole to thermally unaltered sediment, bearing R = 0 I/S clay, was recovered over a 175-m-thick interval, indicating …0.5-μm>

Teaching Law Students Through Individual Learning Styles, Robin A. Boyle, Rita Dunn
Teaching Law Students Through Individual Learning Styles, Robin A. Boyle, Rita Dunn
Faculty Publications
(Excerpt)
Teaching can be rewarding, but it can also be frustrating when some students fail to grasp the material. Professor Robin A. Boyle of St. John’s University School of Law has been teaching Legal Research and Writing in small sections of approximately twenty to thirty students for four years. She, like many of her similarly exasperated colleagues, has repeated the same course content by using either lecture or collaborative learning, and has observed some students doing well, whereas others continued to perform poorly. Then, Dr. Rita Dunn was introduced to the law school faculty and suggested that law professors incorporate …
Testing The Dark Matter Hypothesis With Low Surface Brightness Galaxies And Other Evidence, Stacy S. Mcgaugh
Testing The Dark Matter Hypothesis With Low Surface Brightness Galaxies And Other Evidence, Stacy S. Mcgaugh
Faculty Scholarship
The severity of the mass discrepancy in spiral galaxies is strongly correlated with the central surface brightness of their disks. Progressively lower surface brightness galaxies have ever larger mass discrepancies. No other parameter (luminosity, size, velocity, morphology) is so well correlated with the magnitude of the mass deficit. The rotation curves of low surface brightness disks thus provide a unique data set with which to probe the dark matter distribution in galaxies. The mass discrepancy is apparent from R = 0, giving a nearly direct map of the halo mass distribution. The luminous mass is insignificant. Interpreting the data in …
Tilted Photoalignment Of A Nematic Liquid Crystal Induced By A Magnetic Field, Charles Rosenblatt, Rolfe G. Petschek
Tilted Photoalignment Of A Nematic Liquid Crystal Induced By A Magnetic Field, Charles Rosenblatt, Rolfe G. Petschek
Faculty Scholarship
Nematic liquid crystal cells with polyvinyl cinnamate coated substrates were subjected to ultraviolet light. When this was done in the presence of an oblique magnetic field the photoalignment was found to be temporally and thermally robust, with a large pretilt angle and weak polar anchoring. Moreover, two easy axes with equal and opposite pretilt angle were obtained, such that a magnetic field could switch the director from one easy axis to the other.
Nonlinear Modeling Of Concrete-Filled Frp Tubes Using The Finite Element Method, Kenneth T. Zagers
Nonlinear Modeling Of Concrete-Filled Frp Tubes Using The Finite Element Method, Kenneth T. Zagers
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) has in recent years emerged as an alternative reinforcement for structural concrete. The properties that make FRP appealing to the construction industry include its resistance to electro-chemical corrosion, high strength-to-weight ratio, and electrical insulation. An efficient use of FRP is in the form of concrete-filled tubes, where the tube not only protects the concrete against environmental factors, but also provides confinement and external reinforcement. Since use of fiber composites for confining concrete is relatively new, analytical work in this area is limited to the models that were originally developed for transverse steel reinforcement. However, it has …

A Hybrid System For Well Test Analysis, Edward A. May, Cihan H. Dagli
A Hybrid System For Well Test Analysis, Edward A. May, Cihan H. Dagli
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Petroleum well test analysis is a tool for estimating the average properties of the reservoir rock. It is a classic example of an inverse problem. Visual examination of the pressure response of the reservoir to an induced flow rate change at a well allows the experienced analyst to determine the most appropriate model from a library of generalized analytical solutions. Rock properties are determined by finding the model parameters that best fit the observed data. This paper describes a framework for hybrid network to assist the analyst in selecting the appropriate model and determining the solution. The hybrid network design …
An Object-Based Evolutionary Algorithm: The Nesting Solution, Kanchitpol Ratanapan, Cihan H. Dagli
An Object-Based Evolutionary Algorithm: The Nesting Solution, Kanchitpol Ratanapan, Cihan H. Dagli
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The nesting problems have received considerable attention and have been addressed by a variety of algorithms. Recently, evolutionary algorithms have been adopted for solutions. Most of these algorithms, however, require a search in one-dimensional space; thus a transformation of the problem to a single dimension, as in the sequencing problems, is needed. Unfortunately, this restricts the search space. In this study an object-based evolutionary algorithm for the nesting problems is proposed. The methodology is created in a true two-dimensional space, allowing object-based mechanisms and object-based evolutionary operators to perform effectively on the space without restricting search alternatives. Implementation of the …

A Robust Unit Commitment Algorithm For Hydro-Thermal Optimization, Chao-An Li, R. B. Johnson, A. J. Svoboda, Chung-Li Tseng, E. Hsu
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a unit commitment algorithm which combines the Lagrangian relaxation (LR), sequential unit commitment (SUC), and optimal unit decommitment (UD) methods to solve a general hydro-thermal optimization (HTO) problem. We argue that this approach retains the advantages of the LR method while addressing the method''s observed weaknesses to improve overall algorithm performance and quality of solution. The proposed approach has been implemented in a version of PG&E''s HTO program, and test results are presented.
Evaluation Of Subdivision Methods Used In Octree Ray Tracing Algorithms, Scott Brown
Evaluation Of Subdivision Methods Used In Octree Ray Tracing Algorithms, Scott Brown
Theses
The non-uniform spatial subdivision technique refined by Andrew Glassner [Glassner 1984] minimizes facet intersection tests (i) by automatically generating a density dependent spatial hierarchy of facet regions (called an octree) and (ii) by only testing facets in regions along the path of the ray. Past research has addressed optimization of the octree ray tracing process by separately improving both the octree traversal method and facet intersection algorithms. This author attempted to further improve the overall approach by attempting to identify new octree construction methods that would decrease the number of traversals required to render the scene. This research focused on …

What Does Educational Technology Mean In The Promotion Of Student Achievement : A Literature Review, Fongching Lee
Graduate Research Papers
Research indicates that educational technology has a valued status, especially in the promotion of student learning. The theory behind the study of educational technology includes the four paradigms defined by Saettler (1990): the media view, the communications and systems view, the behavioral sciences view, and the cognitive science concept. This theory serves as the basis for the implementation of educational technology by the teachers.
Implementing educational technology, in special education and regular education (k-12), has indicated positive influences on student achievement. Greater student achievement would translate to better worker-citizens for the United States, thereby allowing the country to be competitive …
Underachievement In Gifted Students, Deborah Langenderfer Nagle
Underachievement In Gifted Students, Deborah Langenderfer Nagle
Graduate Research Papers
This study reflected on literature concerning gifted students who underachieve in school. Its purpose was to review the literature to examine the various definitions of underachievement, the characteristics of gifted underachievers, the risk factors for underachievement related to gifted students and the existence of promising interventions to ameliorate underachievement. The writer concluded that underachievement is a discrepancy related to performance behaviors that can be changed. She found that positive change can best be accomplished by the use of individualized interventions involving both the school and the family.

Navigational Fuzzy Logic Control Of An Autonomous Vehicle, Neil Eugene Hodge
Navigational Fuzzy Logic Control Of An Autonomous Vehicle, Neil Eugene Hodge
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The control of an autonomous passenger vehicle to reach a target amid static and dynamic obstacles is presented. To accommodate various model and environmental uncertainties, fuzzy logic is used in designing the vehicle's controller. The controller evaluates sensor information and outputs signals to change the vehicle's steering and throttle angles. To emulate human behavior, the controller is divided into separate modules. Each module deals with a specific navigational problem such as target steering, target throttle control, cornering throttle control, collision avoidance steering, and collision avoidance throttle control. Several simulation examples are included.
Low-Temperature Molecular Beam Epitaxy Of Gallium Arsenide Antisite Incorporation And Rheed Oscillations: A Theoretical Study, Natarajan Krishnan
Low-Temperature Molecular Beam Epitaxy Of Gallium Arsenide Antisite Incorporation And Rheed Oscillations: A Theoretical Study, Natarajan Krishnan
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Surface dynamics dominate the incorporation of charged and neutral antisite arsenic and the temporal variation of reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) intensity in the low temperature (LT) molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) of (100) gallium arsenide (GaAs). A comprehensive rate equation model is proposed based on the presence and dynamics of a physisorbed arsenic (PA) riding the growth surface which dictates the incorporation and concentration of antisites and the RHEED oscillations (ROs) behavior. The dependence of antisite concentrations on growth parameters can be explained based on the saturation of the PA layer coverage at a monolayer and the competing rate …
