Iowa's Wetlands, Present And Future With A Focus On Prairie Potholes, R. A. Bishop, J. Joens, J. Zohrer Jan 1998

Iowa's Wetlands, Present And Future With A Focus On Prairie Potholes, R. A. Bishop, J. Joens, J. Zohrer

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The vast prairie marsh-pothole complex that historically covered approximately 7 .6 millions acres in Iowa was reduced to less than 30,000 acres by 1980 when it was estimated that only 5,000 acres of prairie marsh and pothole habitat remained in private ownership. A bleak outlook for the future of wetlands was presented by Bishop (1981)." This outlook changed with the development of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan and the passage of two important pieces of legislation: the North American Wetlands Conservation Act and the Food Security Act of 1985. Protection of existing wetlands was afforded through the Swampbuster provision …

Lithologic And Structural Interpretation Of Gravity Data, Northeastern Iowa, Curtiss J. Hella, Richard L. Kellogg Jan 1998

Lithologic And Structural Interpretation Of Gravity Data, Northeastern Iowa, Curtiss J. Hella, Richard L. Kellogg

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A gravity survey was conducted over approximately 4600 square km of northeast Iowa. It was undertaken to provide detailed gravity coverage at approximately 1.6 km intervals and to model the source of several significant gravity and magnetic anomalies. 1,460 gravity stations were occupied in the survey area. Bouguer gravity and residual gravity anomaly maps were prepared, the latter using band-pass filter and trend-surface analysis techniques. The residual maps reveal that the large oval Bouguer gravity anomaly centered beneath Decorah can be traced to the southern border of the survey. Profiles crossing this feature were prepared from the Bouguer map and …

Dunstable, John (Ca. 1395–1453), Peter M. Lefferts Jan 1998

Dunstable, John (Ca. 1395–1453), Peter M. Lefferts

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

Composer, mathematician, and astronomer. He is the author of over 70 surviving works, including music for masses, offices, Marian devotions, isorhythmic motets, and secular songs. Dunstable (or Dunstaple) stands at the head of an influential group of English composers whose music, beginning in the later 1420s and 1430s, circulated on the Continent, where it had an immense stylistic impact. Fifteenth-century musical commentators recognized Dunstable's importance, and he held a high posthumous reputation for many subsequent generations.

Of Dunstable's biography we know little. The paucity of documentation seems to be due to a career that kept him out of the records …

Iowa's Odonata: Declining And/Or Changing?, Robert W. Cruden, O. J. Gode Jr. Jan 1998

Iowa's Odonata: Declining And/Or Changing?, Robert W. Cruden, O. J. Gode Jr.

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

We undertook a comprehensive survey of the Order Odonata in Iowa. Because the credibility of our conclusions derives from our collecting strategy and effort, we discuss our strategy in depth. We collected throughout the state (more than 500 sites in 94 counties), throughout the flight season (late May-early October), and tried to visit several habitats in each county. Our 7900+ observations made between 1993 and 1996 include approximately 2300 county records, 93 of the 110 species reported for the state, and eight species previously unknown from the state. At least 30 species are secure and occur across the state. Other …

Generalized Multiphoton-Ionization Cross Sections Of The Rare Gases For 500-Fs, 248.6-Nm Pulses, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal, D. Xenakis, D. Charalambidis, P. Maragakis, H. Schröder, P. Lambropoulus

C.J.G.J. Uiterwaal Publications

Absolute values for the generalized multiphoton-ionization cross sections and saturation intensities of rare gases are reported for 500-fs, 248.6-nm pulses. For He, Ar, and Kr these values are experimentally determined from the intensity dependence of the ponderomotive shift for intensities comparable to and above the saturation intensity. The measured experimental cross sections [σ(5)He=(0.9+9-o.4)×10-152 cm10 s4, σ(4)Ar=(1.3+1-0.5)×10-116 cm8 s3, σ(5)Kr=(1.2+1.7-0.6)×10-82 cm6 s2, σ(3)Xe=(50-45+350)×10-82 cm …

Parallel Probabilistic Computations On A Cluster Of Workstations, Atanas Radenski, Andrew Vann, Boyana Norris Jan 1998

Parallel Probabilistic Computations On A Cluster Of Workstations, Atanas Radenski, Andrew Vann, Boyana Norris

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Probabilistic algorithms are computationally intensive approximate methods for solving intractable problems. Probabilistic algorithms are excellent candidates for cluster computations because they require little communication and synchronization. It is possible to specify a common parallel control structure as a generic algorithm for probabilistic cluster computations. Such a generic parallel algorithm can be glued together with domain-specific sequential algorithms in order to derive approximate parallel solutions for different intractable problems.

In this paper we propose a generic algorithm for probabilistic computations on a cluster of workstations. We use this generic algorithm to derive specific parallel algorithms for two discrete optimization problems: the …
