Darp: Java-Based Data Analysis And Rapid Prototyping Environment For Distributed High Performance Computations, Erol Akarsu, Geoffrey C. Fox, Tomasz Haupt

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

The integration of a compiled and interpreted HPF gives us an opportunity to design a powerful application development environment targeted for high performance parallel and distributed systems. This Web based system follows a three-tier model. The Java front-end holds proxy objects which can be manipulated with an interpreted Web client (a Java applet) interacting dynamically with compiled code through a tier-2 server. Although targeted for HPF back-end, the system’s architecture is independent of the back-end language, and can be extended to support other high performance languages.

Common Runtime Support For High Performance Languages, Geoffrey C. Fox Jan 1998

Common Runtime Support For High Performance Languages, Geoffrey C. Fox

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

Widespread adoption of parallel computing depends on the availability of improved software environments. An essential component of these environments will be high-level languages. Several languages for exploiting data-parallelism (or task-parallelism) have been developed, or are under development. The stated goal of this project has been to provide a public domain infrastructure for runtime support of these high-level languages. The targeted languages include parallel versions of Fortran and C++, but our intention has been to provide uniform runtime support for many source languages.

Object Web (Java/Corba) Based Rti To Support Metacomputing M&S, Geoffrey C. Fox, Wojtek Furmanski, Hasan T. Ozdemir

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

We present here our Pragmatic Object Web based approach to High Performance Modeling and Simulation and we describe the associated middleware software recently prototyped at NPAC: JWORB (Java Web Object Request Broker) which integrates HTTP and IIOP protocols, and Object Web RTI which implements DMSO RTI 1.3 on top of the JWORB based CORBA / Java software bus. We explain how JWORB and OW RTI are used to build WebHLA – an interactive FMS training environment and we outline our plan towards WebHLA based Virtual Prototyping Environments for Testing, Evaluation and Simulation Based Acquisition.

Techniques For Empirical Testing Of Parallel Random Number Generators, Paul D. Coddington, Sung-Hoon Ko Jan 1998

Techniques For Empirical Testing Of Parallel Random Number Generators, Paul D. Coddington, Sung-Hoon Ko

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

Parallel computers are now commonly used for computational science and engineering, and many applications in these areas use random number generators. For some applications, such as large-scale Monte Carlo simulations, it is crucial that the random number generator have good randomness properties. Many programs are available for testing the quality of sequential random number generators, but very little work has been done on testing parallel random number generators. We present some techniques for empirical testing of random number generators on parallel computers, using tests based on computational science applications as examples. In particular, we focus on tests based on parallel …

The Impact Of Technology On Special Education Students, Nathaniel T. Schutta Jan 1998

The Impact Of Technology On Special Education Students, Nathaniel T. Schutta

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Computers are becoming a part of our everyday life. Every facet of our society, including education, is changing in response. This thesis asks: what impact is technology having on students in one special education classroom? This thesis gives an overview of what technology is present in classrooms, how technology has been used, and examines the handful of studies that have been conducted on the impact of technology on students. I examined a special education classroom focused on the use and maintenance of computers, use of the Internet, and the use of multimedia for presentations. A study was conducted that investigated …

A Framework For Understanding The Impacts Of The Everyday Low Purchase Price Policy In A Supply Chain, Yung-Jae Lee Jan 1998

A Framework For Understanding The Impacts Of The Everyday Low Purchase Price Policy In A Supply Chain, Yung-Jae Lee

Barowsky School of Business | Faculty Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation studies the effect of implementing everyday low purchase price policy (EDLPP) for a manufacturer in consumer non-durable market. In the framework, many .important retailer and consumer behaviors are considered. A major finding of the study is that temporary price discount (a Hi-Lo policy) is generally unprofitable to the manufacturer because the sales increase due to the discount is usually offset by the decreased profit margin and increased total production and inventory related costs. Another important finding is that the retailer plays a critical role as an active middle agent.

Through the sensitivity analysis, we identified the conditions under …

Exponential Dichotomy And Mild Solutions Of Nonautonomous Equations In Banach Spaces, Y. Latushkin, Timothy W. Randolph, R. Schnaubelt Jan 1998

Exponential Dichotomy And Mild Solutions Of Nonautonomous Equations In Banach Spaces, Y. Latushkin, Timothy W. Randolph, R. Schnaubelt

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We prove that the exponential dichotomy of a strongly continuous evolution family on a Banach space is equivalent to the existence and uniqueness of continuous bounded mild solutions of the corresponding inhomogeneous equation. This result addresses nonautonomous abstract Cauchy problems with unbounded coefficients. The technique used involves evolution semigroups. Some applications are given to evolution families on scales of Banach spaces arising in center manifolds theory. © 1998 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

Some Harmonic N-Slit Mappings, Michael Dorff Jan 1998

Some Harmonic N-Slit Mappings, Michael Dorff

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The class SH consists of univalent, harmonic, and sense-preserving functions f in the unit disk, Δ, such that f = h+ḡ where h(z) = z + ∑2∞ akzk g(z) = ∑1∞ bkzk. SHO will denote the subclass with b1 = 0. We present a collection of n-slit mappings (n ≥ 2) and prove that the 2-slit mappings are in SH while for n ≥ 3 the mappings are in SHO. Finally, we show that these mappings establish the sharpness of a previous theorem by Clunie and Sheil-Small while disproving a conjecture about the inner mapping radius. ©1998 American Mathematical Society.

Managing Seedling Emergence Of Cuphea In Iowa, W. W. Roath Jan 1998

Managing Seedling Emergence Of Cuphea In Iowa, W. W. Roath

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Cuphea, a western hemisphere genus of some 260 species, has been proposed as a domestic source of medium-chain fatty acids. These fatty acids are used primarily in soap and detergent manufacture and are presently extracted from imported tropical oils or from petroleum. Considerable difficulty in obtaining consistent plant stands with direct seeding has been experienced at two Iowa locations. Trials were initiated in 1987 and continued through 1994 to test various treatments upon seedling emergence of C. laminuligera Koehne, C lanceolata Ait., and hybrid C. viscosissima Jacq. X C. lanceolata. These treatments included planting depths from 1.3 to 6.4 cm, …

Introduction To The 1997 Symposium On Iowa's Declining Flora And Fauna, Cornelia F. Mutel Jan 1998

Introduction To The 1997 Symposium On Iowa's Declining Flora And Fauna, Cornelia F. Mutel

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In 1980, Iowa's biologists and ecologists gathered at the 92nd annual meeting of the Iowa Academy of Science to present a symposium on the state's declining flora and fauna. Papers were published a year later in a single issue of The Proceedings of The Iowa Academy of Science (Vol. 88, No. 1), which has since been widely cited and much used as a baseline for research efforts. The symposium was a noble undertaking, for although the highly altered composition of Iowa's presettlement ecology had been widely recognized throughout the previous century, no single publication or gathering to that date …

Iowa's Avifauna: Recent Changes And Prospects For The Future, James J. Dinsmore Jan 1998

Iowa's Avifauna: Recent Changes And Prospects For The Future, James J. Dinsmore

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Iowa's avifauna has changed dramatically since 1980. The state list now has 40 additional species and totals 398 species, the most of any vertebrate group. Four species that had not previously nested in Iowa (Ring-billed Gull, Great-tailed Grackle, House Finch, Eurasian Tree Sparrow) and four whose nesting populations had disappeared (Double-crested Cormorant, Sandhill Crane, Piping Plover, Least Tern) now breed regularly here. Little Blue Heron, Cattle Egret, White-faced Ibis, Mississippi Kite, Prairie Warbler, and Red Crossbill nested for the first time but do not have established nesting populations. Trumpeter Swan, Peregrine Falcon, Greater Prairie Chicken, and Sharp-tailed Grouse have been …

Development Of Taxation In The Bible: Improvements In Counting, Measurement, And Computation In The Ancient Middle East, Manuel L. Jose, Charles K. Moore

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper traces the development of five taxation types in the Bible : income taxes, property taxes, special assessment taxes, poll taxes (all direct taxes), and indirect taxes. The development of these taxes is discussed within the context of Israel's historical development. The impact of counting, measurement, and computation on the development of taxation is also considered.

From Accounting To Negative Numbers: A Signal Contribution Of Medieval India To Mathematics, Richard Mattessich Jan 1998

From Accounting To Negative Numbers: A Signal Contribution Of Medieval India To Mathematics, Richard Mattessich

Accounting Historians Journal

The major object of this paper is to present evidence for arguing that the highly developed Hindu accounting tradition, beginning with Kautilya's Arthasastra about 300 b.c., or even earlier, may have had a part in the more receptive attitude of medieval Indian mathematicians, compared to Europeans, in accepting negative numbers. The Hindus justified this attitude by arguing that having a debt is the inverse of possessing an asset; thus, attributing a negative number to a debt but a positive one to an asset. To advance the argument, the paper shows that the accounting aspect of debt is at least as …

Description, Objectivity, And A Robust Pluralism: A Reply To Fleischman And Tyson; Point/Counterpoint, Terry K. Sheldahl

Accounting Historians Journal

If more than welcome in intent, Fleischman and Tyson's article "Archival Researchers: An Endangered Species?" [1997] prompted for me another question, "With friends like this, . . . ?." It is a sad commentary on our field if their contributions are so apt to be "minimalized" that it may "embarras[s]" mainly descriptive accounting historians [Fleischman and Tyson (F&T), 1997, pp. 102, 102 fn.] to be so cited. It is probably not coincidental that other accounting scholars are likely to deem historical study more intellectual the more it is "interpretive" in a mode intellectualist. In any case, as an unembarrassed predominantly …
