Human Visual Perception And Kolmogorov Complexity: Revisited, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre Jan 1998

Human Visual Perception And Kolmogorov Complexity: Revisited, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Experiments have shown that we can only memorize images up to a certain complexity level, after which, instead of memorizing the image itself, we, sort of, memorize a probability distribution in terms of which this image is "random" (in the intuitive sense of this word), and next time, we reproduce a "random" sample from this distribution. This random sample may be different from the original image, but since it belongs to the same distribution, it, hopefully, correctly reproduces the statistical characteristics of the original image.

The reason why a complex image cannot be accurately memorized is, probably, that our memory …

A Vision Of A Successful Secondary Principal : A Reflective Essay, Gregory P. Herbst Jan 1998

A Vision Of A Successful Secondary Principal : A Reflective Essay, Gregory P. Herbst

Graduate Research Papers

Being in education, whether it be as an administrator or a classroom teacher, is not about "us" and "them". It is about "we" -- and what can "we" do together to make every child learn as much as possible? What can "we" do together to make every child enjoy and at the same time be challenged by this educational experience? What can "we" do to encourage each student to become a lifelong learner and caring, responsible citizen?

Throughout this reflective paper, I will outline what I feel are some of the important qualities of an effective secondary principal. These qualities …

Admissions Policies And Ethical Concerns Regarding Intercollegiate Athletics, W. Andrew Hlubek Jan 1998

Admissions Policies And Ethical Concerns Regarding Intercollegiate Athletics, W. Andrew Hlubek

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to examine admissions practices and processes at Division I colleges and universities, especially as they relate to special considerations and related ethical issues. First, I will review the history of abuses in athletic recruiting and attempts at reform. Second, I will provide more recent examples of abuses and reform attempts. Finally, I will provide data from an interview I conducted at a relatively large Midwestern Division I-A public university.

Design And Design Centers In Engineering Education, Clive L. Dym Jan 1998

Design And Design Centers In Engineering Education, Clive L. Dym

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

This paper is intended to be the opening salvo of the workshop, Computing Futures in Engineering Design (Dym, 1997). Thus, I want to take this privileged moment to ask you to think with me about the role of design in engineering. In particular, I want to reflect upon how design is articulated and how design is taught; about the role of design in engineering education and in the practice of engineering; and about the role that could be played locally and, perhaps, nationally by a center devoted to design education. Because I teach here at Harvey Mudd College (HMC), …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Fredrick A. Johnson Jan 1998

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Fredrick A. Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

This reflective paper is my vision of the role of a forward looking Secondary Administrator who effectively uses educational research to impact school improvement in a positive fashion. It is, in effect, a snapshot that includes two sections. Some personal history, characteristics, and core values are in the first section. The final section is a composite reflection that synthesizes knowledge, skills, and attitudes gained through coursework and from experience into my professional vision for administrative practice. I think brain compatible computer-assisted learning can be a component of effective education and the research cited reflects that.

Geophysical Characterization, Redox Zonation, And Contaminant Distribution At A Groundwater/Surface Water Interface, John Lendvay, W A. Sauck, M L. Mccormick, M J. Barcelona, D H. Kampbell, J T. Wilson, P Adriaens Jan 1998

Geophysical Characterization, Redox Zonation, And Contaminant Distribution At A Groundwater/Surface Water Interface, John Lendvay, W A. Sauck, M L. Mccormick, M J. Barcelona, D H. Kampbell, J T. Wilson, P Adriaens

Environmental Science

Three transects along a groundwater/surface water interface were characterized for spatial distributions of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons and geochemical conditions to evaluate the natural bioremediation potential of this environmental system. Partly on the basis of ground penetrating radar measurements, a conductive sediment layer was detected from the shore out to at least 300 m offshore which exhibited gradients in redox pairs and contaminant profiles. The cis-Dichloroethene and 1-chloroethene were predominant in the presence of elevated methane and ferrous iron concentrations and depressed sulfate and aquifer solids-bound iron concentrations. The shallow monitoring points were generally hypoxic to aerobic and exhibited values …

Nature Of The Blue-Phase-Iii-Isotropic Critical Point: An Analogy With The Liquid-Gas Transition, M. A. Anisimov, V. A. Agayan, Peter J. Collings Jan 1998

Nature Of The Blue-Phase-Iii-Isotropic Critical Point: An Analogy With The Liquid-Gas Transition, M. A. Anisimov, V. A. Agayan, Peter J. Collings

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

The analogy with the liquid-gas critical point is analyzed to clarify the nature of the pretransitional behavior of physical properties in the vicinity of the Blue-Phase-m-isotropic transition in chiral liquid crystalline systems. The analogy is unusual: temperature serves as the ordering field and entropy plays the role of the order parameter. Both mean field and parametric equations of state are formulated in terms of scaling fields. The scaling fields are linear combinations of the physical fields, which are temperature and chirality. It is shown that mixing of the physical field variables naturally leads to a strong asymmetry with respect to …

The Petrography Of The Buck Creek Dunite Body, Clay County, Nc: Implications About Its Origin And Emplacement, Trista L. Thornberry Jan 1998

The Petrography Of The Buck Creek Dunite Body, Clay County, Nc: Implications About Its Origin And Emplacement, Trista L. Thornberry

Honors Papers

The Buck Creek dunite body, which is part of the Chunky Gal mafic and ultramafic complex, is well exposed on Corundum Knob in Clay County, North Carolina. These ultramafic rocks are surrounded here by mafic schists and gneisses. Gradational geochemical / mineralogical contacts between the mafic and ultramafic rocks of the this complex imply the same protolith for both rock types. They may have originated as distinct parts of an ophiolitic suite beneath a mid-ocean spreading ridge. The metamorphic history of these ophiolitic rocks suggest further that they were subdued to depths of -18km before being emplaced along fault zones …

Co Physisorbed On Ionic Crystals: An Extended Beg Spin-Lattice Model Of Absorbed Dipolar Molecules, T. E. Burns, John R. Dennison

All Physics Faculty Publications

The 2D dielectric phases and phase transitions of adsorbed dipolar molecules are studied using a dilute spin-one Ising model. The spin-one formulation assigns a spin Si=±1 to a (up/down) dipole occupying a lattice site I adsorbed perpendicular to the substrate surface and Si=0 to unoccupied sites. We relate the mean field expression for the spin-model interaction energy to a more detailed microscopic model involving dipolar, quadrupolar and repulsive interactions beyond nearest neighbor. Analytic solutions in the mean field approximation are discussed for dipole-orientation order–disorder transitions and ferroelectric-to-antiferroelectric transitions as a function of temperature and coverage. The …
