The Roles Of Video In The Design, Development, And Use Of Interactive Electronic Conference Proceedings, Samuel A. Rebelsky, Fillia Makedon, P. Takis Metaxas, James Ford, Charles Owen, Peter A. Gloor

Computer Science Faculty Scholarship

In this paper, we discuss the design and development of a particular type of electronic publication that has gained recent popularity: electronic conference proceedings. We suggest that modern electronic proceedings should provide a high degree of interactivity. To support such interactivity, proceedings should include an extensive collection of features and diverse multimedia components. Features appropriate for electronic proceedings include annotation, presentation, and retrieval mechanisms. Conference papers and multimedia reproductions of conference presentations with features that allow readers to manipulate these reproductions particularly enhance the interactivity of electronic proceedings. Experience from interactive proceedings the authors have designed is also discussed. Special …

Optimal Choices Of Potential Functions In Fuzzy Clustering, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen, Yeung Yam Jan 1998

Optimal Choices Of Potential Functions In Fuzzy Clustering, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen, Yeung Yam

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Fuzzy logic-based clustering techniques are widely used in situations where statistical assumptions are not valid. Whether in estimating cluster centers for model identification purposes or in determining clusters the existing techniques are essentially based upon the choice of some potential functions. As in any design problems of this kind, the choice of such a function has to be justified on a theoretical basis. In this work, we set up a decision frame work and show that optimal potential functions are the ones which are used in current techniques.

Calcareous Nannofossil Paleogene Biostratigraphy Côte D'Ivoire-Ghana Marginal Ridge, Eastern Equatorial Atlantic, Samir Shafik, David K. Watkins, Im Chul Shin

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Paleogene sections on the Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana Marginal Ridge in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, sampled at three sites during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 159, are shown to have calcareous nannofossil assemblages in distinct packages of (sub)zones separated by hiatuses or barren sediments. The packages are different at each of the sites; all fall within the interval from late Paleocene Zone CP6 to latest Oligocene Subzone CN1a inclusive. Three packages (CP9b–CP11, CP13, and CP19) on the crest of the Marginal Ridge at Site 960, four (CP7–CP9b, CP11, CP13–?CP15, and CP17–CN1a) at nearby Site 959 on the shoulder of the Marginal Ridge, and …

Science Of Accounts: Bookkeeping Rooted In The Ideal Of Science, Keith P. Mcmillan Jan 1998

Science Of Accounts: Bookkeeping Rooted In The Ideal Of Science, Keith P. Mcmillan

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper presents the discourse of the "science of accounts" as it developed in 19th century U.S. accounting literature. The paper initially emphasizes the meaning which the term "science of accounts" had during this period. In addition, it presents the contemporary belief that this science helped reveal the essential economic ontology, which bookkeeping makes visible. Second, the paper analyzes how this rational institutional myth became institutionalized within the emerging profession's technical journals and its professional organization, the Institute of Accounts. Through reliance on this scientific foundation, the newly emerging profession could gain greater social legitimacy, leading to the first CPA …

A Proposal For Establishment Of A Maritime University In Bangladesh, Sajid Hussain Jan 1998

A Proposal For Establishment Of A Maritime University In Bangladesh, Sajid Hussain

World Maritime University M.Sc. Dissertations

The main aim of the study is to formulate a process to establish an integrated centre for higher maritime studies and research in Bangladesh. An assessment is made to verify the need for such specialised higher education and research at postgraduate and at doctoral level for the maritime and shipping personnel. It also highlights the need and appropriation for in-service continued education and research. The geographical location, historical background of the emergence of this new country in 1971 and the rehabilitation programme thereafter (in shipping sector) is described. Its diplomatic and political relation with other regional countries is discussed briefly. …

Nanosecond Duration Broadband Luminescence Of Quartz Glasses, Maruf A. Kasymdzhanov, Pulat K. Khabibullaev, Saidislam S. Kurbanov

Turkish Journal of Physics

The results of investigations of luminescence, excited by radiations of $N_2$- and $Nd^{3+}$: YAG-lasers ($\lambda = 337 nm, \lambda = 532 nm$) in high purity quartz glasses are reported. The luminescence has broad spectrum (350-850 nm) and very short duration (1-20 ns).

Production Of Susy Particles In Polarized \Gammap Collisions, A. Kandemi̇r Jan 1998

Production Of Susy Particles In Polarized \Gammap Collisions, A. Kandemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Physics

We discuss the production of several SUSY particles in the high energy collisions of the real photons off the protons within the MSSM. The polarizations of the colliding beams are also considered. The discovery mass limits for the squark and gluinos are presented and we conclude that the capacity of the future TeV scale $\gamma p$ colliders is quite promising in the search for SUSY particles.

Resummation Of Ir Renormalons In A Single Meson Photoproduction, Shahin S. Agaev Jan 1998

Resummation Of Ir Renormalons In A Single Meson Photoproduction, Shahin S. Agaev

Turkish Journal of Physics

Single pseudoscalar and vector mesons hard semi-inclusive photoproduction $\gamma h\rightarrow MX $ via higher twist mechanism is calculated using the QCD running coupling constant method. It is proved that in the context of this method a higher twist contribution to the photoproduction cross section cannot be normalized in terms of the meson electromagnetic form factor. The structure of infrared renormalon singularities of the higher twist subprocess cross section and the resummed expression (the Borel sum) for it are found. Comparisons are made with earlier results, as well as with leading twist cross section. Phenomenological effects of studied contributions for $\pi, …

Interdisciplinary Scientists Gather For Plasma Structure Workshop, Jan Josef Sojka Jan 1998

Interdisciplinary Scientists Gather For Plasma Structure Workshop, Jan Josef Sojka

All Physics Faculty Publications

Two of the most exciting papers presented at the Third Peaceful Valley Workshop were on the nature of plasma structure found in the nighttime midlatitude E and F regions. The first was from a coordinated rocket campaign called Sporadic E Experiment over Kyushu (SEEK) dedicated to the understanding of puzzling quasi-periodic radar echoes that have been detected in association with sporadic E layers. In-situ probes on two rockets measured localized electric fields as large as 20 mV/m, confirming theoretical predictions of strong polarization processes that may result from wavelike distortions imposed on normally stratified sporadic E layers. An unexpected result …

On Some Aspects Of The Decision To Conserve Or Harvest Old Growth Forest, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal Jan 1998

On Some Aspects Of The Decision To Conserve Or Harvest Old Growth Forest, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

In recent times, a great deal of concern has been expressed about the decline in the USA's old growth forests. Although there is broad agreement among reserachers that old growth forests provide timber and amenity services, and that forest harvesting decisions are inherently stochastic, there have been very few formal analyses that have explicitly accounted for these aspects of the old growth forest management problem. Consequently, in this paper I study these aspects of the problem by formulating the decision to conserve or harvest an old growth forest as a Markovian stochastic control problem. I then show how this control …

Spectroscopic And Photometric Analysis Of The Nova-Like Cataclysmic Variable Pg 1000+667: A New Vy Sculptoris Star, T. C. Hillwig, Jeff W. Robertson, R. K. Honeycutt Jan 1998

Spectroscopic And Photometric Analysis Of The Nova-Like Cataclysmic Variable Pg 1000+667: A New Vy Sculptoris Star, T. C. Hillwig, Jeff W. Robertson, R. K. Honeycutt

Faculty Publications - Physical & Earth Sciences

Multiyear photometry and orbit-resolved spectroscopy of the nova-like cataclysmic variable PG 1000+667 show behavior associated with the VY Sculptoris subclass of nova-like cataclysmic variables. Photometric observations over a 35 month interval from Indiana University's robotic telescope Robo-Scope show two drops of 3 mag to a low state. Spectroscopy shows a periodic velocity variation in the Hβ emission line with P = 3.47 hr. This places the star just above the 2-3 hour period gap, which supports the VY Sculptoris classification.

Breeding Ecology And Behavior Of The Hawaiian Hawk, Curtis R. Griffin, Peter W. C. Paton, Thomas S. Baskett Jan 1998

Breeding Ecology And Behavior Of The Hawaiian Hawk, Curtis R. Griffin, Peter W. C. Paton, Thomas S. Baskett

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

We studied the ecology of the endangered Hawaiian Hawk (Buteo solitarius) on the island of Hawaii for three breeding seasons. Their breeding strategy is a prime example of a K-selected species characteristic of many birds in tropical environments: clutch size was one and brood-rearing was among the longest reported for any diurnal raptor. Twenty-eight nests were found in a variety of native and exotic habitats. Incubation lasted 38 days, nestlings fledged after 59-63 days, and parents cared for fledglings for an average of 30.2 weeks, which was 2.5 to 10 times longer than similar-size temperate zone raptors. Males …
