Performance Prediction Of A Folding Fin Aircraft Rocket Using Datcom, Sens5d, And 6dof Gem, Sara Louise Kralewski Apr 1998

Performance Prediction Of A Folding Fin Aircraft Rocket Using Datcom, Sens5d, And 6dof Gem, Sara Louise Kralewski

Engineering

An approach for the performance prediction of a Folding Fin Aircraft Rocket (FFAR) is presented. This prediction was compiled by calculating the gravimetrics, aerodynamics, and trajectory for a FFAR. The trajectory analysis utilized four computer codes: Rogers Aeroscience Rocket Performance Software, NASA Wallops Sens5d Trajectory and Wind-Sensitivity Calculations for Unguided Rockets, the United States Air Force (USAF) Stability and Control DATCOM, and the NASA Langley Research Center LRC-MASS program (GEM). Computations were performed for a rigid body configuration. This analysis was compared to radar data collected during the flight of a FFAR launched in February 1997 at the Poker-Flat Research …

Tests And Analysis Of Geogrids As Base-Reinforcing Materials, Xuemin Fu Apr 1998

Tests And Analysis Of Geogrids As Base-Reinforcing Materials, Xuemin Fu

Engineering

A quantitative assessment of geogrids as base reinforcing material in paved roads is clearly necessary when a design is needed and decisions are to be made as a consequence. Two full scale single wheel load tests were conducted to determine the performance of geogrids as base reinforcing materials in paved roads. These two full scale tests were set up with different base thicknesses, material properties, loading conditions and geogrids. Load, speed, and direction of a test cart were controlled with a computer. Although many types of instruments were installed, measurements of vertical deformation of the pavement surface proved to be …

Fracture And Shakedown Of Pavements Under Repeated Traffic Loads, Tinggang Zhang Apr 1998

Fracture And Shakedown Of Pavements Under Repeated Traffic Loads, Tinggang Zhang

Engineering

Under repeated external loads, engineering structures or objects may fail by large plastic deformation or fatigue. Shakedown will occur when the accumulation of plastic deformation ceases under repeated loads; the response of the system is then purely elastic. Fatigue and shakedown have been individually studied for decades and no attempt has been made to couple these two mechanisms in the mechanics analysis. In this study, an attempt is made to couple shakedown and fatigue in pavement mechanics analysis using numerical simulation. The study covers three main areas: fatigue, static shakedown, and kinematic shakedown analysis. A numerical approach to fatigue analysis …

Screw Configuration Effects During Twin-Screw Extrusion Of Starchy And Proteinaceous Materials, Akhilesh Gautam Apr 1998

Screw Configuration Effects During Twin-Screw Extrusion Of Starchy And Proteinaceous Materials, Akhilesh Gautam

Fisheries

This study investigated the effects of screw configuration and feed composition during extrusion of starchy and proteinaceous materials. All experiments were carried out in a twin-screw extruder with a length/diameter ratio of 32:1. The screw speed, feed flow rate, and moisture content were 400 rpm, 12 kg/h, and 15%, respectively. Kneading block (KB) and reverse screw elements (RSE) were placed at different locations in the 200 mm experimental zone near the die, where the temperature was maintained at $\rm 150\sp\circ C.$ An on-line method for measurement of residence time distribution (RTD) in a food extruder was developed, tested, and validated. …

Ecology Of A Reestablished Population Of Muskoxen In Northeastern Alaska, Patricia Claire Reynolds Apr 1998

Ecology Of A Reestablished Population Of Muskoxen In Northeastern Alaska, Patricia Claire Reynolds

Biological Sciences

The restoration of muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) to regions of former range in northeastern Alaska presented an opportunity to study population dynamics, seasonal patterns, and dispersal in an expanding population of ungulates. Muskoxen were returned to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (Arctic NWR) in 1969-70 after an absence of $>$100 years. In 1982-97, I used annual censuses, counts by sex and age, radio and satellite telemetry, and data from Landsat-TM maps to determine rates of population growth, changes in production, survival, and group size over time, seasonal habitat use, activity patterns, and dispersal of mixed-sex groups. In 1982-86, mixed-sex groups …

Physiological Ecology Of The Arctic Ground Squirrel: Energy Metabolism, Torpor, And Behavioral Endocrinology, Charles Loren Buck Apr 1998

Physiological Ecology Of The Arctic Ground Squirrel: Energy Metabolism, Torpor, And Behavioral Endocrinology, Charles Loren Buck

Biological Sciences

I monitored seasonal changes in body condition and dates of immergence into and emergence from hibernation in a natural population of arctic ground squirrels (Sphermophilus parryii kennicottii) living on the North Slope of Alaska. Age and sex differences in changes of body condition and hibernation chronology are attributable to sex differences in energetic costs associated with preparation for reproduction and differences in reproductive status within males. While winters are long and environmental conditions faced by arctic ground squirrels in northern Alaska are extreme, the timing of hibernation did not differ appreciably from patterns observed in Sciurid populations living in temperate …

Population Status And Patterns Of Distribution And Productivity Of Kittiwakes On St. George Island, Alaska, Stewart Dean Kildaw Apr 1998

Population Status And Patterns Of Distribution And Productivity Of Kittiwakes On St. George Island, Alaska, Stewart Dean Kildaw

Biological Sciences

I studied populations, distributions, and reproductive performance of red-legged and black-legged kittiwakes on St. George Island in the summers of 1993-1995, where populations of both species have experienced generally poor reproductive performance and population declines of ca. 40% over the past 20 years. In 1995, I conducted a whole-island census of kittiwakes on St. George Island and found estimated breeding populations of 193,930 red-legged kittiwakes (81% of their global population), and 62,568 black-legged kittiwakes. In addition, I analyzed census trends on 51 land-based census plots on St. George Island and found that numbers of both species have stabilized in recent …

Molecular Phylogenetics Of Arvicoline Rodents, Christopher John Conroy Apr 1998

Molecular Phylogenetics Of Arvicoline Rodents, Christopher John Conroy

Biological Sciences

The impetus for this dissertation was an interest in geographic variation in Microtus longicaudus with a particular focus on populations in the Alexander Archipelago of southeastern Alaska. To establish a framework for interpreting intraspecific variation in M. longicaudus, I examined the phylogenetics of 28 species of the genus Microtus, including all North American species (Chapters 2 and 4). That study, which corroborates a rapid pulse of diversification noted in the fossil record, necessitated a deeper phylogenetic perspective. Thus, a third objective of the dissertation was to investigate relationships among genera of arvicolines within the framework of other murid rodents. I …

A Spin Network Generalization Of The Jones Polynomial And Vassiliev Invariants, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin Apr 1998

A Spin Network Generalization Of The Jones Polynomial And Vassiliev Invariants, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We apply the ideas of Alvarez and Labastida to the invariant of spin networks defined by Witten and Martin based on Chern-Simons theory. We show that it is possible to define ambient invariants of spin networks that (for the case of SU(2)) can be considered as extensions to spin networks of the Jones polynomial. Expansions of the coefficients of the polynomial yield primitive Vassiliev invariants. The resulting invariants are candidates for solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equations in the spin network representation of quantum gravity.© 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Classification Of Hereditary Matrices, Jim Agler, J. W. Helton, Mark Stankus Apr 1998

Classification Of Hereditary Matrices, Jim Agler, J. W. Helton, Mark Stankus

Mathematics

A classical approach used to obtain basic facts in the theory of square matrices involves an analysis of the relationship between polynomials p in one variable and square matrices T such that p(T) = 0. We consider matrices and operators which satisfy a different type of polynomial constraint. Let H be a complex Hilbert space, T be a bounded linear transformation of H, T* be the adjoint of T, and C[x, y] be the algebra of polynomials in x and y with complex coefficients. For a polynomial p E C[x, y] in …

Relationship Between Continuous Aerosol Measurements And Firn Core Chemistry Over A 10-Year Period At The South Pole, M H. Bergin, E A. Meyerson, Jack E. Dibb, Paul A. Mayewski Apr 1998

Relationship Between Continuous Aerosol Measurements And Firn Core Chemistry Over A 10-Year Period At The South Pole, M H. Bergin, E A. Meyerson, Jack E. Dibb, Paul A. Mayewski

Earth Sciences

Before ice core chemistry can be used to estimate past atmospheric chemistry it is necessary to establish an unambiguous link between concentrations of chemical species in the air and snow. For the first time a continuous long-term record of aerosol properties (aerosol light scattering coefficient, σsp, and Ångström exponent, å) at the South Pole are compared with the chemical record from a high resolution firn core (∼10 samples per year) covering the period from 1981 to 1991. Seasonal signals in å, associated with winter minima due to coarse mode seasalt and summer maxima due to accumulation mode sulfate …

Mortality And Optimal Body Mass Index In A Sample Of The Us Population, Ramón A. Durazo-Arvizu, Daniel L. Mcgee, Richard S. Cooper, Youlian Liao, Amy Luke

Faculty Publications

In this paper, the authors model the nonmonotonic relation between body mass index (BMI) (weight (kg)/height2 (m2)) and mortality in 13,242 black and white participants in the NHANES I Epidemiologic Follow-up Study in order to estimate the BMI at which minimum mortality occurs. The BMI of minimum mortality was 27.1 for black men (95% confidence interval (CI) 24.8-29.4), 26.8 for black women (95% CI 24.7-28.9) 24.8 for white men (95% CI 23.8- 25.9), and 24.3 for white women (95% CI 23.3-25.4). Each confidence interval included the group average. Analyses conducted by smoking status and after exclusion of persons with baseline …
