Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works
This paper describes a major reform effort of an elementary science curriculum called the Science: Parents, Activities, and Literature (Science PALs) Project. The goal of the project was to move teachers towards an interactive-constructivist model of teaching and learning that assumes a middle-of-the-road interpretation of constructivism where hands-on activities are used selectively and purposefully to challenge students' ideas, promote deep processing, and achieve conceptual change. The program also enriches the cross-curricular connections of the science units and promotes meaningful parental involvement. A broad question was raised as to whether or not students really notice. This study explored elementary school students' …

A Mentorship Study Program At Monongahela Middle School, Carolyn Morehead
Theses and Dissertations
A mentorship program for ten students was established at Monongahela Middle School. The purpose of this program was for ten at risk students to pass all their subjects through the motivation of a mentorship program. The sample population consisted of those students that failed three or more subjects in the seventh grade. As a result they were either socially promoted, sent to summer school, or retained. The mentors consisted of seven classroom teachers, two guidance counselors, and one librarian. Mentors were encouraged to meet with their students twice a week for approximately ten minutes and make some form of contact …

Oceanic Emissions Of Sulfur: Application Of New Techniques, Clara Mary Jodwalis
Oceanic Emissions Of Sulfur: Application Of New Techniques, Clara Mary Jodwalis
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Sulfur gases and aerosols are important in the atmosphere because they play major roles in acid rain, arctic haze, air pollution, and climate. Globally, man-made and natural sulfur emissions are comparable in magnitude. The major natural source is dimethyl sulfide (DMS) from the oceans, where it originates from the degradation of dimethysulfonioproprionate (DMSP), a compound produced by marine phytoplankton. Global budgets of natural sulfur emissions are uncertain because of (1) the uncertainty in the traditional method used to estimate DMS sea-to-air flux, and (2) the spatial and temporal variability of DMS sea-to-air flux. We have worked to lessen the uncertainty …

Boreal Forest Regeneration Dynamics: Modeling Early Forest Establishment Patterns In Interior Alaska, Terry Scott Rupp
Boreal Forest Regeneration Dynamics: Modeling Early Forest Establishment Patterns In Interior Alaska, Terry Scott Rupp
Forest Sciences
Ecological processes are responsible for vegetation trajectory within the boreal forest landscape of interior Alaska. The reproductive response of boreal forest to disturbance controls vegetation trajectory. Boreal forest reproduction dynamics are influenced by both biotic and abiotic factors, acting upon the spatio-temporal dynamics of the landscape. Understanding these factors and how the boreal forest responds, both spatially and temporally, is critical for the development of accurate models of regional and global vegetation dynamics. I developed a geographic model of the early post-disturbance seedling regeneration pattern of upland white spruce ecosystems in interior Alaska. The model was developed and runs within …

Pattern And Process In Volcano Seismology, John Paul Benoit
Pattern And Process In Volcano Seismology, John Paul Benoit
Theses (Unassigned)
The patterns of occurrence and the underlying processes of two important seismological phenomena at volcanoes, earthquake swarms and volcanic tremor, were investigated. A global database of volcanic earthquake swarm parameters was compiled and was used to evaluate the March 10-14, 1996 seismo-volcanic crisis at Akutan Volcano, Alaska. Earthquake swarm durations and magnitudes were compared with eruptive activity using this database. Trends identified using the database suggest that the Akutan swarm was not precursory and, no eruption occurred. We postulate that a deep instrusion with a large opening component occurred under the flanks of Akutan. The global swarm database has provided …
The Role Of The Interface For Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy Of Iron/Terbium And Iron/Gadolinium Multilayers, Andrea Else Freitag
The Role Of The Interface For Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy Of Iron/Terbium And Iron/Gadolinium Multilayers, Andrea Else Freitag
Theses (Unassigned)
Ferromagnetic multilayers showing perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) can be used as information storage materials with significantly increased storage density compared to materials currently used. A detailed knowledge of the mechanism that creates PMA and the impact of different parameters on the magnetic properties in such multilayers is essential. 26 Fe/Tb and 11 Fe/Gd multilayer samples with a wide range of thicknesses were fabricated by planar magnetron sputtering. The other fabrication parameters besides thickness were left constant as far as possible. The magnetic and structural properties of these samples were examined using x-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy and torque magnetometry. This study …
Studies Of Compositional Variations In The Thermosphere And Ionosphere Using Far-Ultraviolet Images From De-1, Thomas Jerome Immel
Studies Of Compositional Variations In The Thermosphere And Ionosphere Using Far-Ultraviolet Images From De-1, Thomas Jerome Immel
Theses (Unassigned)
The Dynamics Explorer mission returned a wealth of information from its two orbiting platforms. Of interest here are the three scanning photometers aboard the high-altitude platform DE-1, which obtained hundreds of thousands of global images of Earth, beginning in September of 1981, while using broad- and narrow-band filters to isolate particular terrestrial emissions. The far-ultraviolet (FUV) emissions include the line emissions of OI (130.4 and 135.6 nm) and the band emissions of $\rm N\sb2$ LBH, the brightness of each yielding information on the composition of the upper atmosphere. The OI emissions are related to the column density of atomic oxygen …
Seismic Array Processing And Computational Infrastructure For Improved Monitoring Of Alaskan And Aleutian Seismicity And Volcanoes, Kent Gordon Lindquist
Seismic Array Processing And Computational Infrastructure For Improved Monitoring Of Alaskan And Aleutian Seismicity And Volcanoes, Kent Gordon Lindquist
Theses (Unassigned)
We constructed a near-real-time system, called Iceworm, to automate seismic data collection, processing, storage, and distribution at the Alaska Earthquake Information Center (AEIC). Phase-picking, phase association, and interprocess communication components come from Earthworm (U.S. Geological Survey). A new generic, internal format for digital data supports unified handling of data from diverse sources. A new infrastructure for applying processing algorithms to near-real-time data streams supports automated information extraction from seismic wavefields. Integration of Datascope (U. of Colorado) provides relational database management of all automated measurements, parametric information for located hypocenters, and waveform data from Iceworm. Data from 1997 yield 329 earthquakes …
Seismic Detection Of Transient Changes Beneath Black Rapids Glacier, Alaska, Matthew Allen Nolan
Seismic Detection Of Transient Changes Beneath Black Rapids Glacier, Alaska, Matthew Allen Nolan
Theses (Unassigned)
To gain new insight into the mechanisms of basal motion, I have demonstrated the feasibility of an active seismic technique to measure temporal changes in basal conditions on sub-hourly time-scales. Using changes observed in the summer of 1993 on Black Rapids Glacier, I have determined part of the basal morphology and the mechanisms of seismic change there. One region of the glacier's bed was monitored daily using seismic reflections, for a period of 45 days. The majority of these reflections were nearly identical. However, the englacial drainage of two ice-marginal lakes and one supra-glacial pothole upglacier of the study site …
Wild-Type And Mutant 2,2-Dialkylglycine Decarboxylases: The Catalytic Role Of Active Site Glutamine 52 Investigated By Site-Directed Mutagenesis And Computer Analysis, See-Tarn Woon
Theses (Unassigned)
The ability of pyridoxal 5$\sp\prime$-phosphate (PLP)-dependent 2,2-dialkylglycine decarboxylase (DGD) to catalyze decarboxylation and transamination of amino acids at a single active site depends on the subsite within the active site that cleaves $\alpha$-H and $\alpha$-COO$\sp-$ bonds. As observed in the crystal structure, the strategic position of glutamine 52 at the active site suggests a role in enhancing decarboxylation via formation of a hydrogen bond to the substrate carboxyl group. Supporting evidence for this hypothesis is provided by studies with glutamine 52 active site mutants, computer modeling and protein sequence analyses. Ten mutant DGDs containing alanine, asparagine, aspartate, arginine, glutamate, glycine, …
Development Of A Spatially Distributed Model Of Arctic Thermal And Hydrologic Processes (Math), Ziya Zhang
Development Of A Spatially Distributed Model Of Arctic Thermal And Hydrologic Processes (Math), Ziya Zhang
Theses (Unassigned)
A process based, spatially distributed hydrologic model with the acronym MATH (Model of Arctic Thermal and Hydrologic Processes) is constructed to quantitatively simulate the energy and mass transfer processes and their interactions within arctic regions. The impetus for development of this model was the need to have spatially distributed soil moisture data for use in models of trace gas fluxes (carbon dioxide and methane) generated from the carbon-rich soils of this region. The model is applied against the data from the Imnavait watershed (2.2 $\rm km\sp2)$ and the Upper Kuparuk River basin (146 $\rm km\sp2)$ located on the North Slope …
Advancements In Seismic Tomography With Application To Tunnel Detection And Volcano Imaging, James Doyle Clippard
Advancements In Seismic Tomography With Application To Tunnel Detection And Volcano Imaging, James Doyle Clippard
Theses (Unassigned)
Practical geotomography is an inverse problem with no unique solution. A priori information must be imposed for a stable solution to exist. Commonly used types of a priori information smooth and attenuate anomalies, resulting in 'blurred' tomographic images. Small or discrete anomalies, such as tunnels, magma conduits, or buried channels are extremely difficult imaging objectives. Composite distribution inversion (CDI) is introduced as a theory seeking physically simple, rather than distributionally simple, solutions of non-unique problems. Parameters are assumed to be members of a composite population, including both well-known and anomalous components. Discrete and large amplitude anomalies are allowed, while a …
Studies Of Bagley Icefield During Surge And Black Rapids Glacier, Alaska, Using Spaceborne Sar Interferometry, Dennis Robert Fatland
Studies Of Bagley Icefield During Surge And Black Rapids Glacier, Alaska, Using Spaceborne Sar Interferometry, Dennis Robert Fatland
Theses (Unassigned)
This thesis presents studies of two temperate valley glaciers---Bering Glacier in the Chugach-St.Elias Mountains, South Central Alaska, and Black Rapids Glacier in the Alaska Range, Interior Alaska---using differential spaceborne radar interferometry. The first study was centered on the 1993--95 surge of Bering Glacier and the resultant ice dynamics on its accumulation area, the Bagley Icefield. The second study site was chosen for purposes of comparison of the interferometry results with conventional field measurements, particularly camera survey data and airborne laser altimetry. A comprehensive suite of software was written to interferometrically process synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data in order to derive …
Single And Multiple Electromagnetic Scattering By Size -Shape Distributions Of Small Nonspherical Particles, Frank Michael Schulz
Single And Multiple Electromagnetic Scattering By Size -Shape Distributions Of Small Nonspherical Particles, Frank Michael Schulz
Theses (Unassigned)
A comprehensive model for light scattering by size-shape distributions of randomly oriented nonspherical particles is developed. The model uses spheroids as model particles. The vector Helmholtz equation is solved with a new separation of variables (SVM) approach that allows one to calculate the ensemble-averaged single scattering optical properties of ensembles of randomly oriented particles analytically. Since the use of the SVM in spheroidal coordinates properly accounts for the geometry of the particles, the method is applicable to a large range of shapes ranging from elongated prolate needles via spheres to flat oblate disks. The relation between geometric symmetries of particles …
Seismic Investigations Of Subsurface Volcanic Structures And Processes At Mount Spurr, Alaska And Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat, West Indies, John A. Power
Theses (Unassigned)
Seismological techniques are used to infer the subsurface structures and volcanic processes at two recently active volcanoes: Mount Spurr, Alaska, and Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat, West Indies. The three-dimensional P-wave velocity structure of Mount Spurr is determined to depths of 10 km by tomographic inversion of 3,754 P-wave arrival times from local earthquakes. Results show a prominent low-velocity zone beneath the southeast flank of Crater Peak extending from the surface to 3--4 km below sea level, spatially coincident with an active geothermal system. Beneath Crater Peak an approximately 3-km-wide zone of relatively low velocities correlates with a near vertical band …
