Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 Imaging Of Ugc 12695: A Remarkably Unevolved Galaxy At Low Redshift, Stacy S. Mcgaugh May 1998

Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 Imaging Of Ugc 12695: A Remarkably Unevolved Galaxy At Low Redshift, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

Utilizing the F814W and F300W filters, short-exposure Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images were taken of UGC 12695, a nearby (z ∼ 0.021) low surface brightness disk galaxy. UGC 12695 has an unusual morphology, consisting of a Y-shaped nucleus surrounded by a faint spiral arm with a number of bright H II regions interspersed throughout the galaxy. Surface photometry indicates that the majority of recent star formation in this galaxy occurred in these very localized regions, most of which have a radius of ≲2″. This uneven stellar distribution, combined with the galaxy's overall extremely blue color and …

A Study Of Self-Esteem In Learning Disabled Students Across Placements, Constance Occhetti May 1998

A Study Of Self-Esteem In Learning Disabled Students Across Placements, Constance Occhetti

Theses and Dissertations

This study set out to offer support for inclusion by analyzing learning disabled students in an inclusive environment and their pull-out program counterparts. The analysis focused on an examination of student self-esteem, a variable central to student success. A hypothesis stating that learning disabled students who were served in an inclusive environment will achieve higher scores of self-esteem than learning disabled students who were served in a traditional pull-out program was proposed. This hypothesis was based on previous research on the practice of inclusion, which showed positive effects for learning disabled students. The practice of inclusion has been supported throughout …

Xanthones As Antimalarial Agents: Binding Interactions Between Heme Analogues And Xanthones, Jane Xu Kelly May 1998

Xanthones As Antimalarial Agents: Binding Interactions Between Heme Analogues And Xanthones, Jane Xu Kelly

Dissertations and Theses

Human falciparum malaria is caused by Plasmodium falciparum parasite, which digests host hemoglobin within its food vacuole, releasing toxic heme. P. falciparum detoxifies free heme to hemozoin by polymerization. This process is believed to be the target of most successful antimalarial drugs, chloroquine and quinine, which are now losing their effectiveness due to the spread of multi-drug resistant strains. Xanthones were recognized in the laboratory of Dr. M. Riscoe (Portland VA Medical Center) to bind to heme, preventing heme polymerization.

This thesis reports a study of the interactions of a potential antimalarial agent, 4,5-dihydroxyxanthone (X2), with heme and tin (IV) …

Molecular Design And Association Constants Of Nizatidine-Guest Complexes, Elizabeth Corbeil May 1998

Molecular Design And Association Constants Of Nizatidine-Guest Complexes, Elizabeth Corbeil

Honors Theses

Nizatidine, N-[2-[[[2-[(dimethylamino)metbyl]-4-thiazolyl]methyl]thio]ethyl]-N'methyl- 2-nitro-l,l-ethenediamine (Axid"), has been investigated for its potential to act as a host in guest-host complexes. Nizatidine binds with the guests through hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions. Guest-host studies were conducted using fluorescence quenching, calorimetry, NMR and invisible experiments. The lowest energy conformation of nizatidine is found to be U-shaped through theoretical calculations. Fluorescence experiments indicated that tryptophan and pyridoxine had large association constants. Further studies using calorimetry and NMR techniques concluded that no complexation had occurred. Complexation experiments have been done to find guests that complex with nizatidine. Caffeine, luminol, nicotinamide, phenylalanine, pyridoxine, pyrogallol, and tryptophan were …

A Study Of Self-Concept As It Relates To Academic Achievement And Gender In Third Grade Students, Grace S. Woods

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if a positive relationship exists between self-concept, academic achievement, and gender. The subject sample consisted of fifty-two students from a suburban public school district in southern New Jersey. Twenty-seven females and twenty-five males participated in the study. The Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale was used to evaluate self-perception. Academic achievement was evaluated with the use of math and reading grades from the students' report cards. The correlation coefficient results indicated that a significant relationship between self-concept and both reading (.291) and math (.307) achievement exists. Frequency polygons were used to display the distribution …

Stability And Reconstruction For An Inverse Problem For The Heat Equations, Kurt M. Bryan, Lester Caudill May 1998

Stability And Reconstruction For An Inverse Problem For The Heat Equations, Kurt M. Bryan, Lester Caudill

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

We examine the inverse problem of determining the shape of some unknown portion of the boundary of a region W from measurements of the Cauchy data for solutions to the heat equation on W. By suitably linearizing the inverse problem we obtain uniqueness and continuous dependence results. We propose an algorithm for recovering estimates of the unknown portion of the surface and use the insight gained from a detailed analysis of the inverse problem to regularize the inversion. Several computational examples are presented.

A Multicultural Curriculum For The Third Grade In The Library Media Center At The Rieck Avenue School, Millville, N.J., Joyce A. Rankin

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis project developed a multicultural curriculum for the third grade classes at the Rieck Avenue School, Millville, New Jersey, which adhered to the Core Curriculum Standards. The question to be answered was "How can third graders achieve an historical understanding of the varying cultures of New Jersey, the United States, and the world through the library media center curriculum?" Because of the changing demographics of our country and the increase of minority students in our schools, it is imperative that students learn how to appreciate, understand, and interact with people who are ethnically, racially, and culturally different than themselves. …

Observation Of The Radiative Decay D*+→D+Γ, J. Bartelt, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration May 1998

Observation Of The Radiative Decay D*+→D+Γ, J. Bartelt, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We have observed a signal for the decay D*+→D+γ at a significance of 4 standard deviations. From the measured branching ratio B(D*+→D+γ)/ B(D*+→ D++pi0 = 0.055 ± 0.014 ± 0.010 we find B(D*+→D+γ)= 0.017 ± 0.004 ± 0.003, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also report the highest precision determination of the remaining D*+ branching fractions.
