Storybook Reading And The Speech Language Pathologist: A Fundamental Partnership For Speech And Language Intervention, Angela Crume
Storybook Reading And The Speech Language Pathologist: A Fundamental Partnership For Speech And Language Intervention, Angela Crume
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Because of the relationship between speech and language delays and reading difficulties, speech-language pathologists should be encouraged to include elements of reading in their therapy with preschoolers. By using such activities, speech-language pathologists should observe an increase in the language and speech abilities of their clients, regardless of the children's present abilities. Reading can be included in the context of therapy in various ways, but the most efficient way is to design thematic units with correlated prereading and postreading activities.
A Critical Evaluation Of Prof. Roberto Unger's Legal Theory, Pavan K Mamidi
A Critical Evaluation Of Prof. Roberto Unger's Legal Theory, Pavan K Mamidi
Working Papers
There are two general parts to this paper. In the first part I wish to raise some questions relating to Prof. Unger's very general claim about the contingency of knowledge to formative empirical contexts. This part will be my attempt to place in perspective the specific points w.hich I wish to dispute with Prof. Unger. In the second p.art I wish to deal with the balance where I agree with him almost completely. The parts where I beg to differ with Prof. Unger do not prevent me from accepting his call forprogrammatic argument, and yet attend upon those parts of …

Academic Diversity: Reading Instruction For Students With Special Needs, William H. Rupley, William D. Nichols
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Provisions to assure that all children are provided quality reading instruction have always been a concern for classroom teachers. Today, greater sensitivity to learners with special needs has led to their inclusion in regular classrooms for the full instructional day. Implications for the reading instructional program are clear; it must employ a variety of instructional and organizational techniques to suit a wide range of student abilities. This article addresses legislation that led to the present focus on classroom inclusion for students with special needs and accommodation of the students with special needs in the classroom reading program. Particular discussion is …

The Application Of First Language Reading Models To Second Language Study: A Recent Historical Perspective, Carolyn Lally
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This article examines the influence of first language reading models on second language reading theory and research. Second, this essay recommends a sharing and transfer of knowledge between related disciplines, such as first- and second-language reading, to increase our understanding of the reading process, regardless of the target language.

Review Of Contented Among Strangers: Rural German Speaking Women And Their Families In The Nineteenth- Century Midwest By Linda Schelbitzki Pickle, Royden Loewen
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Here is an important study that joins the growing number of histories of rural American women. Its strengths are many. First, it uncovers the complex and multi-layered worlds of German-speaking immigrants; Linda Schelbitzki Pickle, a professor of German and Foreign Languages, uses her linguistic dexterity to unveil a rich cache of German-language diaries, letters, and memoirs, delivering it to North American readers in finely-crafted English narrative. The work is also remarkably sensitive to German immigrant diversity; although the immigrant groups hail from five Midwest states-Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska-they represent both Dreisziger Germans and "Germans from Russia," religious and …
Review Of Myths And Traditions Of The Arikara Indians By Douglas R. Parks, Tressa Berman
Review Of Myths And Traditions Of The Arikara Indians By Douglas R. Parks, Tressa Berman
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Once again, Douglas Parks has offered an unsurpassed account of Arikara oral traditions by carefully selecting and elaborating upon his earlier, though less accessible, Traditional Narratives of the Arikara Indians (University of Nebraska Press, 1991, in four volumes). Parks's careful English translations of a range of Arikara narratives fulfill the interests of specialists and non-specialists alike through detailed descriptions of both stories and storytellers. Old stories become infused with new life as we learn more about the narrators themselves and the various performative contexts in which stories get told. If this was an attempt on Parks's part to bring the …
Review Of Native American Verbal Art: Texts And Contexts By William M. Clements, Paul G. Zolbrod
Review Of Native American Verbal Art: Texts And Contexts By William M. Clements, Paul G. Zolbrod
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In addressing what its author calls "The Ethnopoetics Movement," this sensible, well-researched volume demonstrates that recording Native American verbal art is not a new enterprise, tracing it back to seventeenth-century Jesuit records and following it through the present-day. Nor has the task of converting tribal discourse to literature ever been easy. Along with the inevitable hazards of translation, cultural barriers intrude, especially in the transfer of oral performance to the silent page.
William Clements lays a clear foundation for a reasonable perspective. Earlier commentators, he writes, "uncritically assumed" that printed records of orally-based tribal material "provide absolutely reliable information about …

Against Common Sense: Why Title Vii Should. Protect Speakers Of Black English, Jill Gaulding
Against Common Sense: Why Title Vii Should. Protect Speakers Of Black English, Jill Gaulding
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
The speech of many black Americans is marked by phrases such as 'we be writin"' or "we don't have no problems." Because most listeners consider such "Black English" speech patterns incorrect, these speakers face significant disadvantages in the job market. But common sense suggests that there is nothing discriminatory about employers' negative reactions to Black English because it makes sense to allow employers to insist that employees use correct grammar.
This article argues against this common sense understanding of Black English as bad grammar. The author first analyzes the extent of the job market disadvantages faced by Black English speakers …

Las Olvidadas -- Gendered In Justice/Gendered Injustice: Latinas, Fronteras And The Law, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol
UF Law Faculty Publications
This Article will study Latinas in the United States and develop a framework that aims to eradicate injustices Latinas experience by importing the voices of las olvidadas into the heart of rights-talk, thus placing Latinas in justice. First, the piece will identify who the olvidadas are-unseen, unheard, and virtually non-existent in the world of law as well as in the myriad other worlds they inhabit. Parts III and IV consider structural roadblocks-first external and then internal-that conspire to perpetuate Latina invisibility and disempowerment, keeping Latinas from justice. Part V presents the locations and positions of Latinas who suffer intimate violence …
