Ordinary Canadians: Identity Of Time And Place, Jim Higginson
Ordinary Canadians: Identity Of Time And Place, Jim Higginson
Student Scholarship
Previous studies on national identity have centered around national identity formation by individuals because of the influence of values and preferences; social connectedness through social interactions; and values orientation of individuals and groups and their ability to change. Talking to a cross section of ordinary Canadians in their own setting about their experiences, stories and thoughts on what is happening in Canada provides an opportunity to assess their thoughts and ideas about a unique Canadian identity. The design of the research is qualitative utilizing experience-based information gathering. Oral histories were conducted with 64 ordinary Canadians from all provinces and regions, …
English Loanwords In Chicano Spanish: Characterization And Rationale, Robert N. Smead
English Loanwords In Chicano Spanish: Characterization And Rationale, Robert N. Smead
Faculty Publications
One highly visible, often stigmatized feature of Chicano Spanish is lexical innovation due to intimate contact with English and the mainstream culture. As noted in table 1, these Anglicisms are the result of varying degrees of host language adaptation and integration and include at least three distinct types of innovations: the lexical switch, the loanword, and the calque.
Biblical Hermeneutics And Hebraism In The Early Seventeenth Century As Reflected In The Work Of John Weemse (1579-1636), Jay Shim
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
This dissertation presents a contextual and historical understanding of hermeneutical works of post-Reformation Reformed orthodoxy, and the flow of exegetical tradition within orthodox theology from the Reformation to the early seventeenth century. Virtually all of the older modern studies interpreted post- Reformation theology and its biblical study as "dogmatic," "deductive," "rationalistic," and "unspiritual," descriptions allegedly made in a comparison and contrast of the characteristics of post-Reformation thought with the theology of the early sixteenth century. These pejorative descriptions typically state that post-Reformation biblical exegesis was a deductive reading of dogmas into Scripture using a predetermined dogmatic analogy of faith. This …
Textualism, The Unknown Ideal?, William N. Eskridge Jr.
Textualism, The Unknown Ideal?, William N. Eskridge Jr.
Michigan Law Review
In May 1997, the New York Knickerbockers basketball team was poised to reach the finals of its division in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Knicks led the rival Miami Heat by three games to two and needed one more victory to win the best-of seven semifinal playoff series. Game six would be in New York; with their star center, Patrick Ewing, playing well, victory seemed assured for the Knicks. A fracas during game five changed the odds. During a fight under the basket between Knicks and Heat players, Ewing left the bench and paced in the middle of the …
Guerrillas In Our Midst: The Assault On Radicals In American Law, Daria Roithmayr
Guerrillas In Our Midst: The Assault On Radicals In American Law, Daria Roithmayr
Michigan Law Review
On October 9, 1997, radicals everywhere celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Che Guevara, the revered Cuban and South American rebel known as much for his guerrilla manifestos as for his scraggly facial hair and the black beret positioned slightly askance. At the same time Latin Americans and revolutionaries were marking the death of their beloved Che, Professors Daniel Farber and Suzanna Sherry were publishing their long-awaited book, Beyond All Reason: The Radical Assault on Truth in American Law. The professors' timing was, unintentionally, quite appropriate. Like many of Che's manifestos, the book sounds an ideological call to …
Conflict And Conflict Resolution In The Sahel: The Tuareg Insurgency In Mali, Kalifa Keita Lieutenant Colonel
Conflict And Conflict Resolution In The Sahel: The Tuareg Insurgency In Mali, Kalifa Keita Lieutenant Colonel
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
June 27, 1990, is a significant date in the recent history of Mali. It marks the beginning of what Malians call "The Second Tuareg Rebellion." The first had been staged against the post-colonial Malian government in 1963. The national government had suppressed that rebellion with harsh coercive measures, and the Tuaregs continued to nurture grievances. The second Tuareg rebellion coincided in the early 1990s with turbulent political developments in Malian society as a whole. It soon was clear that Mali's stability and progress were contingent on ending the insurgency. This, in turn, required a solution to Tuareg grievances. By the …

Pre-Referral Portfolio Assessment For Limited English Proficient Students, Elizabeth Grayce Stevens
Pre-Referral Portfolio Assessment For Limited English Proficient Students, Elizabeth Grayce Stevens
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
What can be done to ensure that the needs are met of children who are limited in proficiency of the English language? Such is the familiar query of educators and professionals alike. In fact, one elementary school principal stated that this question often presents itself as the first item of business when administrators meet together (Marian Waterman, personal communication, October, 1997). How do we know where to place a child? How do we evaluate progress? When progress is limited, how do we know if the child requires special education services? The answers lie in appropriate assessment.
Looking Through A Paradox An Environmental History Of Two Mormon Communities, Jenna Howick Tilt
Looking Through A Paradox An Environmental History Of Two Mormon Communities, Jenna Howick Tilt
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
"Nature is both powerfully attractive and powerfully repellent,"1 describes the "Western Paradox" as it was first described by Donald Worster in his Under the Western Skies: The West has been an American symbol of independence, equality and self-preservation from its earliest day, but that freedom had a price. The scarcity of water in the arid West shackled these free spirited adventurers as they became slaves to canals, dams and irrigation ditches.2 Their natural spirit seemed to be defied by the world of technology and machines, which they sought to leave behind by coming West. Yet, by coming to …
Assessing Mental Health Of Native American Children: Relationship Of Acculturation With Social, Emotional, And Behavioral Functioning, Christopher H. Morris
Assessing Mental Health Of Native American Children: Relationship Of Acculturation With Social, Emotional, And Behavioral Functioning, Christopher H. Morris
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The literature indicates that, in comparison to children of other ethnic minority groups, Native American children may be at greater risk for a variety of emotional and behavioral Ill disorders and negative psychosocial conditions. Many may also struggle to resolve issues related to cultural identity. Understanding how Native American children and families relate to the cultures within which they live is a critical aspect of preventing and treating childhood mental disorders. Although Native children and families face persistent social pressure to adapt to a multicultural world, no systematic research exists examining the relationship between families' experience of acculturation and their …
The Nonuse Of Figurative Language In Conduct Disordered Adolescents, Mike Berger
The Nonuse Of Figurative Language In Conduct Disordered Adolescents, Mike Berger
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The relationship between the literal language and conduct problems among conduct disordered adolescents was examined in 109 subjects. The inability to use figurative language was found to be positively related to ratings of conduct problems. Both the parents' discipline style and nonuse of figurative language were related to conduct problems in conduct disordered adolescents. The possible role of other variables, for example, age, sex, and IQ, was examined. Possible mechanisms that could relate the lack of figurative competence and conduct problems were explored.

Why Do Not All Separatist Movements Aim For Secession? The Cases Of Chechnia And Tatarstan, Mesut Acar
Why Do Not All Separatist Movements Aim For Secession? The Cases Of Chechnia And Tatarstan, Mesut Acar
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
Which ethnic groups are more likely to secede is a debated question among scholars. One view, as proposed by Immanuel Wallerstein, holds that ethnic groups living in economically advanced regions are more likely to secede. In contrast, other scholars like Donald Horowitz claim that backward groups in backward regions are more likely to secede. One aim of this thesis is to explore which view has better explanatory power for two republics in the Russian Federation: the Republic of Chechnia and the Republic of Tatarstan. In 1992 they were the two most separatist regions in the Russia. Later they diverged, and …
The Development Of Psychometric Analysis Of An Error-Choice Test To Measure Teacher Attitudes Toward Students With Adhd, Thomas Michael Hepperlen
The Development Of Psychometric Analysis Of An Error-Choice Test To Measure Teacher Attitudes Toward Students With Adhd, Thomas Michael Hepperlen
Theses and Dissertations
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an increasingly pervasive psychiatric disorder among elementary school aged children. It is estimated that between three and five percent of all grade-school children suffer from this disorder. Because teachers are central figures in the academic environment of young children, any negative attitudes that teachers hold about ADHD could have a tremendous impact on the academic self-efficacy and success of students diagnosed with ADHD. An extensive literature review found no instruments designed to measure attitudes toward persons with ADHD.
The present study developed a psychometric instrument to measure teacher attitudes toward children with ADHD. This …

Acoustic And Perceptual Comparisons Of Imitative Prosody In Kindergartners With And Without Speech Disorders, Robin Harwell Rodriguez
Acoustic And Perceptual Comparisons Of Imitative Prosody In Kindergartners With And Without Speech Disorders, Robin Harwell Rodriguez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the affiliation of prosody with childhood articulation disorders. The Tennessee Test of Rhythm and Intonation Patterns, T-TRIP (Koike & Asp, 1981), was used to determine if kindergartners with linguistic (i.e. phonological) speech disorders, oral-motor speech disorders, or normal speech performed differently on imitative prosody tasks. Performance was assessed perceptually with T-TRIP overall and subtest scores, and acoustically with measurements of individual prosodic variables (amplitude, duration, and fundamental frequency) on selected items from the rhythm and intonation subtests. Perceptual and acoustic data were examined for characteristic patterns of performance by individual subjects and by groups.

Multiculturalism And American Democracy, Arthur M. Melzer, Jerry Weinberger, M. Richard Zinman
Multiculturalism And American Democracy, Arthur M. Melzer, Jerry Weinberger, M. Richard Zinman
Kansas Open Books
Multiculturalism: is it the face of twenty-first century America or merely a passing intellectual fad? With its celebration of ethnic diversity and strong advocacy of tolerance, this contemporary movement provides philosophical justification for many who seek to correct social inequities. But while its proponents see it as a means of promoting self-esteem among marginalized groups, its critics see it as a dangerous form of relativism that culminates, paradoxically, in a new form of intolerance. The fourteen essays in this volume address the pros and cons of multiculturalism and explore its relationship with liberal democracy. A team of stellar contributors—C. Vann …

The Association Between Music Intelligence And Learning Process Style, Mary Jane Wishart-Morey
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to begin to understand brain function and musicality. The problem of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between learning process style and musical intelligence.
Subjects who were in grade three were administered the Intermediate Measures of Musical Audiation test (IMMA). This test was used to identify musically talented children. Subjects took the test by listening to a tonal cassette and rhythm cassette. The subjects decided whether pairs of tonal or rhythm pattern they heard sounded the same or different. These tests required no reading skills. Students put circles around the …
