nfants with a birth weight less than 1500gm (very low birth weight, VLBW) are more likely to have disabling cerebral palsy(CP). The aim of this study was to identify prenatal, perinatal, postnatal risk factors for CP in VLBW infants and to determine the usefulness of cranial ultrasonographic (us) findings in predicting CP.The study group comprised 159 VLBW infants born at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Kaohsiung in the period from 1989 to 1996. CP was diagnosed via clinical evaluation in twenty-five (15.7%) of these Children. Literature shows evidence of a shift in occupational therapy from traditional institutional settings to community-based settings. As increasing numbers of new and expert occupational therapists enter community-based practice, the need for competency identification for practice, education, and reimbursement becomes paramount. This qualitative research study sought to identify domains and competencies of community-based occupational therapy practice by interviewing three expert occupational therapists using the critical incident method in which each therapist described one therapeutic intervention with a client. This method, as seen in nursing studies (Benner, 1982, 1984), serves to elicit competencies embedded in expert practice. Thirty-nine competencies were described in …

Online networks in university campuses are expected to enhance the learning process, an argument founded on the theories of Cognitive Apprenticeship, Situated Cognition, and Social Constructivism. However, the extent to which students use these networks should be a significant predictor of such benefits.

This study investigated the patterns of use of online networks in universities with a survey administered to 299 students enrolled in a random sample of undergraduate classes at Western Michigan University during the summer semester of 1998.

The main purpose of this study was to examine the effect of biculturalism on self esteem in a sample of 51 Northern Plains Native American college students (29 females, 22 males). Subjects completed the Northern Plains Biculturalism Inventory (NPB1; Allen & French, 1994) and the Index of Self-Esteem (ISE; Hudson, 1982). Pearson Product- Moment correlations, independent t-tests, a multiple regression analysis, and an one-way analysis-of-variance was performed using the SPSS statistical package to examine, if any, the relationships between the NPBI subscales and the ISE total scores. This investigation examines the delivery of immediate, in-session feedback using the “bug-in-the-ear” (BITE) as an instructional technique in conjunction with live supervision during the counseling practicum. The study was conducted to explore an effective means of supervisor intervention which did not disrupt the counseling session. Few empirical investigations have been conducted in this area, and previous studies on this instructional aid used in models of live supervision were largely narrative in design.

Counseling self-efficacy, trainee anxiety, and counseling performance were examined for twenty graduate student counselor trainees enrolled in the department of counseling at a northern plains university. Ten participants …

The fusion gene CBFB-MYH11 is generated by the chromosome 16 inversion associated with acute myeloid leukemias. This gene encodes a chimeric protein involving the core binding factor β (CBFβ) and the smooth-muscle myosin heavy chain (SMMHC). Mouse model studies suggest that this chimeric protein CBFβ-SMMHC dominantly suppresses the function of CBF, a heterodimeric transcription factor composed of DNA binding subunits (CBFα1 to 3) and a non-DNA binding subunit (CBFβ). This dominant suppression results in the blockage of hematopoiesis in mice and presumably contributes to leukemogenesis. Both the United States and the countries that comprise the European Union have previously imposed limits on tobacco advertising. These restrictions prevent tobacco companies from advertising on broadcast television. Recently, the European Union adopted a new proposal that would expand restrictions by phasing out press and billboard advertisements, and prohibiting tobacco company sponsorship of sporting events. It seems certain that advertising interests in Europe will challenge the new proposal as a violation of freedom of expression. An analysis of the European Convention on Human Rights reveals that these challenges should ultimately succeed since the restriction on commercial speech is more …

ศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ของฮอร์โมนโปรเจสเตอโรน (P4) เอสตราไดออล (E2) และคอร์ติซอล (C) ที่มี ต่อความสมบูรณ์พันธุ์ในโคนมพันธุ์ผสม 10 ตัว ด้วย Analysis of Variance และ Duncan's New Multiple Range Test จากผลการตรวจการตั้งท้องโดยการคลําผ่านทวารหนัก แบ่งโคออกได้เป็น 2 กลุ่ม ๆ ละ 5 ตัวคือ กลุ่ม ผสมติดและกลุ่มผสมไม่ติด วิเคราะห์ระดับโปรเจสเตอโรน เอลตราไดออล และคอร์ติซอลในซีรั่มของโคทั้ง สองกลุ่มในวันที่ 0 (วันที่ผสมเทียม), 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 25 และ 41 หลังการผสมโดยวิธีเรดิโออิมมิวโนเอสเสย์ พบว่าโคกลุ่มที่ผสมติดมีระดับของโปรเจสเตอโรน และคอร์ติซอลสูงกว่าโคกลุ่มที่ผสมไม่ติด (P<0.05) โคทั้ง สองกลุ่มมีระดับโปรเจสเตอโรน ตำสุดในวันที่ 0 (P<0.05) ไม่พบว่ามีความแตกต่างของระดับเอสตราไดออล ระหว่างกลุ่มและในวันต่าง ๆ ที่ทําการศึกษา

During 1997-1998, a serological survey of equine infectious diseases in Thailand was undertaken. Blood, sera and blood smears were taken from 400 horses, donkeys and mules out of an equine population of 8,600. Tests were carried out at the National Institute of Animal Health, Bangkok, Thailand, and at the USDA laboratories, USA, for 10 diseases. There was no evidence of the presence of African Horse Sickness, Glanders, Dourine, Surra and Equine Viral Arteritis. There was one reactor to Babesia caballi and 62 to Babesia equi. การศึกษาในครั้งนี้ทำการวิเคราะห์ด้วยวิธีทาง immunohistochemistry เพื่อศึกษาชนิดของneuro- transmitters ที่อาจเกี่ยวข้องกับการนำกระแสประสาทรับความรู้สึกเจ็บปวด และอุณหภูมิ (nociceptive และ thermoreceptive information) luusta trigeminal ganglion a sensory trigeminal nucleus vos medulla oblongata ของงูเขียวหางไหม้ (Trimeresurus albolaris) นำสมองงูเขียวหางไหม้จำนวน 12 ตัว มาแยกเอา brainstem และ maxillomandibular ganglion มาตัด section แล้วทำ immunofluorescent labelling โดยใช้ antibodies ต่อ neurotransmitters 6 ชนิด คือ substance P, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), galanin, neuropeptide Y, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) และ Somatostatin จากผลการทดลองพบว่า ใน ganglion มีเซลล์ขนาดเล็กถึงขนาดกลางจำนวนหนึ่ง ที่แสดง immunoreactivity ต่อ substance P และ CGRP และแทบจะไม่พบเซลล์ที่ให้ผลบวกต่อ galanin ในส่วนของ medulla oblongata WU substance P immunoreactivity lu fibres oglu descending trigeminal tract uazlu neuropil รอบ ๆ lateral descending nucleus ของ trigeminal nerve และยังพบได้ใน fibres ที่วิ่งพาดข้าม trigeminal subnucleus caudalis …

การทดลองนี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาผลการแช่แข็งตัวอ่อนกระบือปลักไทย ที่เก็บจากแม่กระบือ ปลักพันธุ์ดีที่ถูกคัดออกจากฝูง โดยทําการแช่แข็งตัวอ่อนกระบือปลักจำนวน 29 ตัวอ่อน ด้วยวิธีมาตรฐาน ใช้อัตราการลดอุณหภูมิ 0.5°c ต่อนาที จากอุณหภูมิ -6.5°c ถึง -30 °c ก่อนนำลงแช่ในไนโตรเจนเหลว น้ํายา แช่แข็งตัวอ่อนที่ประกอบด้วย 10% (v/v) กลีเซอรอล + 0.1 M ซูโครส ในสารละลาย Dulbecco's modified phosphate buffered saline (D-PBS) หลังเก็บไว้นานประมาณ 1 ปี ละลายตัวอ่อนและดึงสารป้องกันการเกิด ผลึกน้ำแข็งออกจากตัวอ่อนแบบ 3 ขั้นตอนในน้ำยาสำหรับละลายตัวอ่อน โดยค่อย ๆ ลดความเข้มข้นของ กลีเซอรอลจาก 5% (v/v) ไปยัง 2.5% และ 0% ตามลำดับ อย่างละ 5 นาที พบว่ามีตัวอ่อนกระบือ จำนวน 25 ตัวอ่อน (86.2%, 25/29) ที่มีคุณภาพและลักษณะสามารถนำไปใช้ย้ายฝากได้ แบ่งเป็นระยะมอรูล่า 15 ตัวอ่อน (83.3%, 15/18) มอรูล่าระยะรวมตัวแน่น (compact morula) จำนวน 4 ตัวอ่อน (100%, 4/4) เป็นตัวอ่อน ระยะบลาสโตซีสระยะแรก (early blastocyst) 2 ตัวอ่อน (100%, 2/2) และ ระยะบลาสโตซิส (blastocyst) 4 ตัวอ่อน (100%, 4/4) ย้ายฝากตัวอ่อนจำนวน 21 ตัวอ่อนให้กระบือตัวรับ 10 ตัว ตัวรับตั้งท้อง 1 ตัว (10%, 1/10) จากผลการศึกษานี้ …

The availability of several recombinant bovine cytokines have led to the investigation of the potential of cytokines as prophylactic or therapeutic strategies in the control of bovine mastitis, the most expensive disease affecting the dairy industry. ค่า bioavailability ของโภชนะ คือ ปริมาณเปอร์เซ็นต์ของโภชนะที่สัตว์ดูดซึมได้จริง ๆ จากอาหารที่กิน และเป็นส่วนที่นำไปใช้ในขบวนการเมตาบอลิซึม ค่านี้แสดงให้เห็นถึงคุณค่าของโภชนะโดยเปรียบเทียบ ระหว่างสารอาหาร 2 ชนิด การหาค่า bioavailability มีหลายวิธี คือ slope-ratio assay, parallel lines assay, three-point assay และ standard curve assay แต่ละวิธีก็จะมีข้อกำหนด และความเหมาะสมของการใช้ งานแตกต่างกันไป วิธีที่ดีสุดนั้นย่อมเป็นวิธีที่เหมาะสมกับข้อกำหนดมากที่สุด ในการทดลองหาค่า bioavailability ของสารอาหารนั้น slope-ratio assay เป็นวิธีที่นิยมกันที่สุด มีข้อกำหนดอยู่ 2 ข้อ คือ การตอบสนองของ สัตว์จะมีค่าเท่ากันเมื่อไม่ได้เติมโภชนะที่ต้องการเปรียบเทียบทั้งสองชนิดในอาหาร (intersection) และความ สัมพันธ์ระหว่างการตอบสนองและปริมาณโภชนะที่ทดลองต้องเป็นเส้นตรง (linearity)
