The Anglicans In New Guinea And The Torres Strait Islands, David Wetherell
The Anglicans In New Guinea And The Torres Strait Islands, David Wetherell
Pacific Studies
This study compares the Anglican diocese of Carpentaria in northeastern Australia with its Anglican neighbor the diocese of New Guinea. While New Guinea called for sacrifice on a heroic scale as befitted a mission among pure “pagans,” Carpentaria was intended primarily as a church for Europeans. However, the withdrawal of thousands of settlers from the Gulf of Carpentaria country from 1910 to 1942 in the wake of recurrent cyclones, economic depression, and drought led to wholesale white depopulation. This depopulation, added to the Anglicans’ acceptance of the London Missionary Society’s sphere in the Torres Strait Islands, left Carpentaria overwhelmingly Islander …

Hypocrites And Barking Harlots: The Clinton-Lewinsky Affair And The Attack On Women, Christina R. Wells
Hypocrites And Barking Harlots: The Clinton-Lewinsky Affair And The Attack On Women, Christina R. Wells
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
Given the status of the participants, the nature of the scandal, the potential political ramifications, and the melee accompanying the recently-released Independent Counsel's report, the unrelenting media coverage of the Clinton-Lewinsky affair is unsurprising. Wallowing in the libidinous transgressions of this country's most powerful leader would prove almost irresistible to a citizenry practically obsessed with sex. Of course, this coverage has provided the President's critics with an unending platform from which to call, depending upon their point of view, for his (a) apology, (b) resignation, or (c) impeachment. Many of the President's detractors, however, have not limited their criticism to …

Re-Cycling The Menstrual Cycle: A Multidisciplinary Reinterpretation Of Menstruation, Heather H. Rea
Re-Cycling The Menstrual Cycle: A Multidisciplinary Reinterpretation Of Menstruation, Heather H. Rea
Masters Theses
This thesis offers a reinterpretation of the human female menstrual cycle that understands the process as positive, functional, and practical experience. Standard western definitions and understandings of menstruation use negative terminology and focus on menstrual blood as an indicator of failed conception. This view contributes significantly to the negative perception women have of menstruation in general, their own menstrual cycles, and ultimately of their femaleness. This fundamental, physiological process that symbolizes femaleness, the menstrual cycle, has been defined both, bio-medically and culturally, as a negative experience. I propose a reconceptualization of the menstrual cycle that is not only a tool …
Desire For Thinness And Desire For Health In Eighteen And Nineteen-Year-Old Females, Monica Gene Andis
Desire For Thinness And Desire For Health In Eighteen And Nineteen-Year-Old Females, Monica Gene Andis
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Desire for thinness and desire for health were surveyed among eighteen and nineteen year old female adolescents in north-central West Virginia to determine the incidence of these motivations within this population and their relationship to unnecessary weight loss concerns, and dieting behaviors. Variables derived from body image satisfaction, self-esteem, socioeconomic status, religiosity, and food management behavior were examined for their ability to predict desire for thinness and health in subjects.;Using the statistical process of discriminate analysis, 51.6% of 345 subjects were correctly classified into groups desiring thinness and/or health. Only weight perception accuracy and food management group were found to …
Determination Of Resistance Across Development Section Return Stoppings, James Robert Gandy
Determination Of Resistance Across Development Section Return Stoppings, James Robert Gandy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis describes a ventilation engineering study to determine the resistance across return stoppings on continuous miner development sections. By determining the resistance across return stoppings, one equivalent resistance branch can be created to model leakage across a return stopping line on a development section. This thesis evaluates four types of return stoppings to determine which construction techniques and materials provide the highest resistance, thus allowing minimal leakage from the intake to return entry.;The first phase of the thesis outlines the data gathering process including; station locations, equipment requirements and techniques. Second, the data is used to create a model …

Local Government Law, R. Perry Sentell Jr.
Mercer Law Review
Plaintiff filed an action against the county for the repeated flooding of his home. The county attorney responded with a deft procedural maneuver:
It was my bright idea to take the plaintiff's deposition at his home. My timing was impeccable. During the deposition .... something on the order of a ten-year storm [occurred], an event which flooded [plaintiff's] property just as [he] had claimed. During our "adjournment" of the deposition, ... I [was] captured on video [by plaintiff's attorney] wading through plaintiff's front yard with my pants legs somewhere in the vicinity of my knees!

In recent studies, we have shown that Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains that are acutely cytotoxic in vitro damage the lung epithelium in vivo. Genetic analysis indicated that the factor responsible for acute cytotoxicity was controlled by ExsA and therefore was part of the exoenzyme S regulon. The specific virulence determinant responsible for epithelial damage in vivo and cytotoxicity in vitro was subsequently mapped to the exoU locus. The present studies are focused on a genetic characterization of the exoU locus. Northern blot analyses and complementation experiments indicated that a region downstream of exoU was expressed and that the expression of this …
Reasons, Goals, And Incentives For Corporate Philanthropy To Arts Organizations, Marsonda Mcnutt Schroeder
Reasons, Goals, And Incentives For Corporate Philanthropy To Arts Organizations, Marsonda Mcnutt Schroeder
Theses and Dissertations
One of the methods employed by corporations to create a favorable relationship with its publics is to use philanthropy to not- for-profit organizations such as the arts. From a communication point of view, this action may be looked upon as a gesture between the corporation, the recipient, and the publics which involves messages both sent and received. Research on this communication gesture is important because arts organizations need to know how the process works in order to help secure philanthropic dollars. Corporations need to understand the results of the process so that they can more effectively achieve the goals for …
The Molecular Basis Of Cancer, Frank Gorga
The Molecular Basis Of Cancer, Frank Gorga
Bridgewater Review
After cardiovascular diseases, cancer is the second leading cause of death in America. Since 1990 over half a million Americans have died each year of some form of cance1; and the number and rate is still increasing. In 1970 approximately 17 percent of all deaths were attributed to cancer, while by 1995 the figure had risen to 24 percent. In her chilling book on the meaning of illness in America, Illness as Metaphor, Susan Sontag described cancer as the sickness of the American 20th century. Learning about cancer has become more than a useful chore for those who suffer from …

Burnout Among Managed Care Clinicians, Dawn M. Waggoner
Theses
Burnout is a pattern of emotional overload in which one feels overwhelmed by the demands imposed by others . Those individuals who do "people work" of some kind are the most vulnerable to burnout. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between the level of burnout and the number of months case workers have worked at the same managed care company. Thirty-two case workers from one managed care company completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) to assess their current level of burnout. Data analysis run on all three subscales found that there was no …

Male Sexual Orientation Among Religious Men: A Discriminant Function Analysis, James L. Born
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
The ecological changes of human society especially in Western civilization via scientific, industrial, and technological revolutions have altered the foundations of what "masculinity" means in the l.990's. This study was designed to discriminate and predict three masculine sexual orientation groups based upon father-son relations, gender, religious spirituality, psychological maltreatment/abuse, and shame. Data were obtained from 92 male volunteer participants (gay=32, heterosexual=32, x-gay=28) who identify as Christians or who affiliate with a Christian organization. Instruments used were the Boyhood Gender conformity Scale (BGCS), the Father Forgiveness Perception Scale (FFPS), the Home Environment Questionnaire (HEQ) (i.e., Child Abuse Trauma Scale), Internalized Shame …

Running With Zoe, John Kilbourne
Running With Zoe, John Kilbourne
Bridgewater Review
Dr. John Kilbourne’s recent book, Running With Zoe: Conversations On The Meaning Of Sport, is the product of a lifetime of coaching, working with athletes and thinking about sports issues. Most of the book’s chapters take the form of “conversations” which illuminate some aspect of sport. Professor Kilbourne’s partners in these conversations include members of the Canadian National Figure Skating Team, the late sports journalist Howard Cosell and the author’s 7-year old daughter, Zoe. Like many sections of the book, the opening chapter of Running With Zoe, entitled “Prelude,” draws on Professor Kilbourne’s own experiences.
