Touring Colonial America: Review Of Edward Kimber, Itinerant Observation In America, Ed. Kevin J. Hayes., Darin E. Fields

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Traveling to the colonies in 1742 at age twenty-three, young Edward Kimber embarked on what was no doubt the adventure of his life. Son of Isaac Kimber, editor of the London Magazine from 1732 to 1755, Edward had grown up around the publishing industry and was keenly aware of the public appetite for reading material. Like nearly all literate travelers of his day, but perhaps more aware than many that his travels in the colonies would furnish material for later publication, Kimber dutifully kept a journal record of his observations and experiences. His American adventure yielded literary fruit from 1743 …

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Two new subspecies are described from Macon County, North Carolina, United States. Speyeria aphrodite cullasaja is characterized by dorsal melanism, especially in females, by usually lacking the dorsal FW basal spots in cell Cu1 and Cu2, and by a narrowed buff marginal band on the ventral HW (sometimes absent in females). Phyciodes batesii maconensis males are characterized by wholly yellow ventral hind wings devoid of any dark marginal dusting or whitish crescents; and females occasionally possessing, lightly dusted, brown margins and rarely having a silvered marginal ventral HW spot. PPhyciodes batesii maconensis larvae are gregarious Aster feeders. Females are …

A Meta-Analytic Investigation Of The Effect Of Freshman Seminars On Student Attrition At Four Year Colleges And Universities, Raymond Brown Dec 1998

A Meta-Analytic Investigation Of The Effect Of Freshman Seminars On Student Attrition At Four Year Colleges And Universities, Raymond Brown

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Tinto (1975) theorized that for a student to complete his/her education, he/she must integrate socially as well as academically at the institution. Freshman seminars are designed to ease students into college life and provide them with skills to cope socially and academically, thereby paving the way for institutional integration and, ultimately, degree completion. Researchers at a number of institutions have evaluated the effectiveness of the freshman seminar at reducing freshman to sophomore year attrition. They have reported mixed results. Here, the literature addressing the efficacy of freshman seminars for reducing attrition is reviewed using meta-analysis. The number of weekly contact …

"Lest We Forget": The History Of Mercer Law Review, Charles R. Adams Iii Dec 1998

"Lest We Forget": The History Of Mercer Law Review, Charles R. Adams Iii

Mercer Law Review

It was one of those rare, perfect, early fall afternoons that occasionally favors middle Georgia. The stultifying heat of the 1948 summer had finally broken, and outside the open windows in the newly-cleared attic space on the third floor of the Ryals Law Building, the sky was the deepening color of blue that holds the promise of cooler weather and falling leaves. Inside, the air was still, but the atmosphere was electric with energy and a measure of tension. The group of students assembled there, led by Bill Tyson, were about to try something new and different in Mercer University …

The Georgia Home Rule System, R. Perry Sentell Jr. Dec 1998

The Georgia Home Rule System, R. Perry Sentell Jr.

Mercer Law Review

Few doctrines attract more universal acclaim than local government "home rule"; even fewer possess a more convoluted heritage or content. As for heritage, difficulty inheres in locating a point of origin, for "home rule has roots deep in Anglo-American political history." As for content, imprecision begins with terminology itself, for "in point of fact the term has never been given legal definition and can scarcely be regarded as a term of our law at all."

Real Property, T. Daniel Brannan, William J. Sheppard

Mercer Law Review

This Article surveys case law and legislative developments in Georgia law of real property during the period from June 1, 1997 to May 31, 1998. The cases and statutes discussed in this Article were chosen for their significance to practitioners in Georgia, and not every case decided or statute passed during the survey period is mentioned. Of particular note, in one case decided during the survey period, the Georgia Court of Appeals clarified the reach of the Commercial Real Estate Broker Lien Act by defining what services will support the filing and foreclosure of a broker's lien under the statute

Lower Lip Numbness Due To Peri-Radicular Dental Infection, Wei Cheong Ngeow Dec 1998

Lower Lip Numbness Due To Peri-Radicular Dental Infection, Wei Cheong Ngeow

Pre-2000

Lower lip numbness has always been a sinister symptom. Much has been written about it being the sole symptom of pathological lesions and metastatic tumours in the mandible. It may also be a symptom of manifestations of certain systemic disorders. A case of lower lip numbness resulting from the compression of the mental nerve by a peri-radicular abscess is presented because of the unusual nature of this spread of infection.

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Moderate- And High-Carbohydrate Diets On Coronary Heart Disease Risk Factors: A Pilot Study, Margaret Helen Fernandez, Julia Ava Niehaus Soper Dec 1998

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Moderate- And High-Carbohydrate Diets On Coronary Heart Disease Risk Factors: A Pilot Study, Margaret Helen Fernandez, Julia Ava Niehaus Soper

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This pilot study compared the effects of two diets on total cholesterol to high- density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio, body mass index, and waist circumference. A diet of 15% protein, 55% or more carbohydrate, and 30% or less fat was compared to a diet of 30% protein, 40% carbohydrate, and 30% fat. Lipid levels and anthropometric measurements were obtained on 18 adult males with moderately elevated lipid levels before and after 12 weeks of dietary intervention. Analyses showed variances between and within the study groups in the areas of anthropometric measurements and lipid levels; no statistically significant differences between the groups …

Adverse Possession Of Municipal Land: It's Time To Protect This Valuable Asset, Paula R. Latovick Dec 1998

Adverse Possession Of Municipal Land: It's Time To Protect This Valuable Asset, Paula R. Latovick

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The laws of several states regarding adverse possession of municipal land vary widely from providing no protection to granting complete immunity from such loss. Generally, states that permit adverse possession of municipally owned land do so without articulating a rationale for allowing such a loss of a valuable municipal asset. In this Article, Professor Latovick describes why the current state of the law is unsatisfactory. She then considers the public policies raised by the issue of adverse possession of municipal land. Professor Latovick concludes by proposing that states should adopt legislation expressly protecting all municipal land from adverse possession and …

Spare The Rod, Embrace Our Humanity: Toward A New Legal Regime Prohibiting Corporal Punishment Of Children, Susan H. Bitensky Dec 1998

Spare The Rod, Embrace Our Humanity: Toward A New Legal Regime Prohibiting Corporal Punishment Of Children, Susan H. Bitensky

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This article proceeds from the simple premise that hitting children hurts them-even when the hitting does not rise to the level of child abuse as traditionally conceived. There is convincing evidence that corporal punishment is a hidden cruelty in child rearing that has serious adverse consequences for its victims and society at large. Yet forty-nine states permit parental corporal punishment of children and approximately half of the states permit such punishment in elementary and secondary schools The main purpose of this Article is to question the advisability of continuing the legalized status of corporal punishment of children in the United …

A Case Study Of Immigrants And Education: The Scalabrinian Experience With Italian Americans, Mary Elizabeth Brown Dec 1998

A Case Study Of Immigrants And Education: The Scalabrinian Experience With Italian Americans, Mary Elizabeth Brown

Journal of Catholic Education

This article describes the experience of the Society of Saint Charles, commonly known as the Scalabrinians, regarding the Catholic education of Italian immigrants between 1887 and 1933. It relates this historical situation to the following issues facing contemporary Catholic immigrant education: 1) financing local parochial educational programs with nonlocal funds; 2) developing theories regarding transcultural education; and 3) considering education inclusively to incorporate programs beyond parochial schooling.

Caribbean Asset Protection Trust: Here Comes The Sun: Dispelling The Dark Clouds Of Controversy, Denise C. Brown Dec 1998

Caribbean Asset Protection Trust: Here Comes The Sun: Dispelling The Dark Clouds Of Controversy, Denise C. Brown

University of Miami Business Law Review

The legends of offshore banking in the Caribbean have become a modem story of reverse piracy. Instead of bounty found, the tales are of money hidden. Unfortunately, the perceptions of Caribbean offshore banking, in particular offshore trusts, as nothing more than hidden treasure, are inaccurate and fail to recognize the value of this asset protection device as a legal, smart wealth shield.

In attempting to redeem the offshore trust as a legitimate planning instrument for asset protection, this comment will examine the concept of the offshore trust, describe how a site for offshore trusts is selected, focus on the popularity …

Dysphagia And Videofluoroscopic Examination In Parkinson's Disease, Shin-Liang Pan, Tyng-Guey Wang, Yeun-Chung Chang Dec 1998

Dysphagia And Videofluoroscopic Examination In Parkinson's Disease, Shin-Liang Pan, Tyng-Guey Wang, Yeun-Chung Chang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a degenerative disorder of the nigrostriatal system, and frequently complicated with swallowing difficulties. This paper reviewed the current studies on the scope of the incidence, the clinical symptoms, the use of videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS), and the management of dysphagia in PD. The awareness of dysphagia in PD patients in previous studies was around 31 to 72 %, however, this figure does not reflect the actual severity of swallowing disorders in this group patients. We found a great variability in the incidence of swallowing disorder on VFSS, depending on the patients selected. Around 31 to 92% …

The Relationship Between Congenital Muscular Torticollis And The Development Of Dominant Hand, Shu-Yi Wang, Chau-Peng Leong Dec 1998

The Relationship Between Congenital Muscular Torticollis And The Development Of Dominant Hand, Shu-Yi Wang, Chau-Peng Leong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

We studied dominant hand development in 158 patients with congenital muscular torticollis who had received physical therapy in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Kaohsiung, from 1989 to 1995. There were 97 boys and 61 girls in the study group. The congenital muscular torticollis was right side in 84 patients and left side in 74 patients. We also enrolled 512 healthy children, aged from 3 to 5 years old, as the control group. Ninety-one percent of the control subjects were right handed, and nine percent of them were left handed. Subjects with right congenital muscular torticollis were right handed in 63.1% of …

Validation Of The Clinical Swallowing Evaluation In Stroke Patients, Yi-Nien Lin, Tyng-Guey Wang, Yeun-Chung Chang, Fu-Mei Hsieh, I-Nan Lien Dec 1998

Validation Of The Clinical Swallowing Evaluation In Stroke Patients, Yi-Nien Lin, Tyng-Guey Wang, Yeun-Chung Chang, Fu-Mei Hsieh, I-Nan Lien

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Although it has variable reliability, the bedside clinical swallowing evaluation (CSE) of dysphagia has long been accepted as the basic screening tool in the examination of the swallowing function of stroke patients. The purpose of this study was to define the reliability of the CSE by comparing it to the standard videofluoroscopic study of swallowing (VFSS). Thirty six stroke patients within a period of two years were included in this study, and all of them received the CSE and VFSS simultaneously. Three of them had a normal VFSS, whereas 21 (58%) aspirated during the VFSS examination. Ten of the people …
