Waccara's Utes: Native American Equestrian Adaptations In The Eastern Great Basin, 1776-1876, Stephen P Van Hoak Jan 1998

Waccara's Utes: Native American Equestrian Adaptations In The Eastern Great Basin, 1776-1876, Stephen P Van Hoak

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The equestrian adaptations of the Western Utes of the Eastern Great Basin were distinct from the stereotypical Plains Indian adaptation to the horse. The range and mobility of the Western Utes was enhanced by their acquisition of horses, but the Utes did not abandon their diversified subsistence system to specialize in buffalo hunting as did many Plains equestrian groups. Western Ute equestrian adaptations changed and evolved throughout the nineteenth century in response to environmental, cultural, economic, and political issues. Waccara's Western Utes represented the most conspicuous stage of Native American equestrianism in the Eastern Great Basin, and the success of …

Radionuclide Dose Assessment Of Groundwater Migrating From The Benham Events, Nts: A Solute Flux Approach, Lloyd T Desotell

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Radionuclide Dose Assessment of Groundwater Migrating from the Benham Event, NTS; a Solute Flux Approach presents results of a preliminary dose-based modeling study of radionuclide transport from the Benham subsurface nuclear detonation at the Nevada Test Site. This investigation utilized a radiologic source term generated from publicly available data and consists of forty-two radionuclides that may be present in sufficient quantities to pose a potential human health risk at the source. To avoid the complex near-cavity chemistry (e.g. solubility of actinides), conservative assumptions were used to estimate a hydrologic source term. By using a two-dimensional stochastic groundwater contaminant transport code, …

Minority Over-Representation In The Juvenile Justice System, Shirley G Burgess Jan 1998

Minority Over-Representation In The Juvenile Justice System, Shirley G Burgess

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Minority over-representation in the juvenile justice system is a national concern. Research in this area is limited, however, there is indication that minority over-representation, particularly of African-American youth, seems to occur at various stages of juvenile justice processing. It is my belief that once arrested, minority youth are more likely to be certified as an adult than white youth. This paper examines the certification process in Clark County, Nevada, by studying a random sample of 200 cases. The results suggest that this theory holds true. The labeling perspective offers the best explanation of disparate treatment of African-American youth. Discrimination has …

Frequencies were calculated in order to describe the population and identify …

Predictors Of Exercise Behaviors In Nursing Students, Eileen K Gemmell Jan 1998

Predictors Of Exercise Behaviors In Nursing Students, Eileen K Gemmell

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Physical activity has been identified as a major deterrent of many diseases, and is one of our nation's top priorities for health promotion. The purpose of this research study was to determine whether personal factors and perceptions of the benefits of and barriers to exercise, as selected factors of Nola Pender's Revised Health Promotion Model (1996), predict exercise patterns in a convenient sample of A.D.N. and B.S.N. nursing students (N = 311). A predictive design was used; The students' mean score for exercise behaviors was 2.14 (on a scale of 1-4), which indicates inconsistent exercise. The most frequently cited benefit …

Harvey Fierstein: A Prophetic Voice In The Gay Community, Ernest James Hall

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Harvey Forbes Fierstein has become an important influence in the gay community. His first major play, Torch Song Trilogy, was a major milestone for gay theatre. By becoming the first gay play to be commercially successful, it launched Fierstein into the spotlight. Since his first major Broadway play, he has continued to be active as playwright, actor, and gay rights activist; This paper places two of Fierstein's major plays within the context of gay liberation history and gay theatre history. By analyzing the importance and theme of both Torch Song Trilogy and Safe Sex, it is argued that Fierstein is …

Wild Horses And The Bureau Of Land Management: A Policy Review And Critique, Julene Haworth Jan 1998

Wild Horses And The Bureau Of Land Management: A Policy Review And Critique, Julene Haworth

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The 1971 Wild Horse and Burro Act (PL 92-195) charged the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) with the management and protection of wild horses and burros on public lands. The implementation of the Act was remiss in failing to recognize the limitation of expertise within the Bureau in carrying out its new responsibilities. The lack of specialists in horse and burro management led to an inconclusive protection policy that consequently has generated conflict and controversy. Therefore, policy decisions and actions associated with management and protection programs have been subjected to charges of abuse, neglect, and corruption. This thesis will discuss …

Infrared interactance was determined on a Futrex 5000 measured at the biceps halfway between the axillary fold and the anticubital space. Bioelectrical impedance was determined with …

Supermarket Tabloid Influence On Mainstream Daily Newspaper Editorial Content, William Glenn Cook Jan 1998

Supermarket Tabloid Influence On Mainstream Daily Newspaper Editorial Content, William Glenn Cook

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Daily newspapers' content is influenced by the tabloid press in two ways. First, the dailies serve as a watchdog by criticizing tabloids' sensational news, covering litigation against tabloids, and allowing the subjects of tabloid reports to rebut or criticize allegations tabloids make against them. Second, the dailies occasionally follow up on or repeat stories first reported by tabloids. This study compared the content of three weekly supermarket tabloids--the National Enquirer, Globe, and Star--against the content of six daily newspapers--the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Las Vegas Sun, Reno Gazette-Journal, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and USA Today--over a 26-week period. The …

"Dilbert": A Rhetorical Reflection Of Contemporary Organizational Communication, Beverly Ann Jedlinski Jan 1998

"Dilbert": A Rhetorical Reflection Of Contemporary Organizational Communication, Beverly Ann Jedlinski

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The comic strip "Dilbert," created by Scott Adams, was analyzed to evaluate its accuracy and effectiveness in mirroring contemporary organizational communication. This historical case study utilized the methods proposed by Kathleen J. Turner (1977) to provide a rhetorical perspective of "Dilbert" and to demonstrate the reciprocal relationship between the comic and society. A three-pronged approach was applied to examine: (1) Precedents in comic strips and organizational communication; (2) Subject matter and dialogue; and (3) Character composition and artistic style. Conclusions indicate that Adams has astutely captured the dysfunctional nature of workplace communication in a unique form of discourse embraced by …

The Failure Of Altruism: Alternatives To Improve The Donor Rate In Organ Transplantation, John Richards Mundy Jan 1998

The Failure Of Altruism: Alternatives To Improve The Donor Rate In Organ Transplantation, John Richards Mundy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Ethical and moral issues facing potential organ donors, their families or agents, and the medical community are created and driven by the rapidly expanding demand for the life-giving resource (ever more successfully utilized)--a factor coupled with the persistently scarce and relatively constant low level of supply. The serious nature of the shortage of compatible organs has prompted medical, ethical, and legal scholars to consider alternatives to altruistic donation. This approach has never been able to keep up with the demand--indeed, it falls further behind each year. One set of alternatives involves (currently banned) financial incentives for organ donors. I will …

Recreation And Gambling Behaviors Among College Students, Laurie Platz Jan 1998

Recreation And Gambling Behaviors Among College Students, Laurie Platz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Motivation of student gamblers was described and compared with their motivation for other recreational activities. Students (N = 996) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas completed self-report questionnaires including The South Oaks Gambling Screen (Lesieur and Bloom, 1987) and the Recreation Experience Preference Scales (Driver, 1983). Despite differences in statistical significance (p {dollar}<{dollar}.01), pathological gamblers (N = 111) and recreational gamblers (N = 349) shared 7 of their top 10 ranked motives for gambling. Primary motives for gambling appeared to remain stable with practical differences emerging in the rankings of their importance depending on an individual's level of gambling involvement. All students assigned statistically higher importance to their favorite other recreational activities than to their favorite gambling activities. However, recreational gamblers reported more agreement between motives for participating in their favorite gambling activities and their favorite other recreational activities.

Critical Care Nurses' Knowledge Of Cardiac Rhythm Strips, Marlene Carol Riley Jan 1998

Critical Care Nurses' Knowledge Of Cardiac Rhythm Strips, Marlene Carol Riley

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Competency testing of nurses in relevant areas is a somewhat new concept. This concept stems, in part, from the 1996 Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) requirement that all institutions provide proof of competency of their employees. The purpose of this study considered whether critical care nurses who are ACLS-certified are able to accurately interpret cardiac rhythms. Patricia Benner's model of skill acquisition was used as the theoretical framework. Critical care nurses who are ACLS-certified are assumed to be in at least the competent level of skill acquisition; The sample was comprised of 99 ACLS-certified critical care …

Chain Reaction: The Tragedy Of Atomic Governance, Mary Dawn Wammack Jan 1998

Chain Reaction: The Tragedy Of Atomic Governance, Mary Dawn Wammack

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

An unprecedented combination of imagination and capital resulted in the most profound, and profane, achievement in modern history--the atom bomb--but the strategies that empowered its development caused inestimable suffering in peacetime America. Discrete practices of secrecy, media manipulation, and the devaluation of scientific opinion evolved and coalesced during the cold war, permeating institutions and pre-empting any protection of the unwary from exposure to radioactive fallout. While the atomic testing program and its consequences are often considered in light of national policy, this analysis alternatively reveals the character, fusion, and trajectory of practices that culminated in the collision of the government …
