Determination Of Ground-Water Tracer 2,6-Difluorobenzoic Acid By Gc/Ms, Cong Han Jan 1998

Determination Of Ground-Water Tracer 2,6-Difluorobenzoic Acid By Gc/Ms, Cong Han

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this study, a GC analytical method for the determination of the ground water tracer, 2,6-difluorobenzoic acid (2,6-DFBA) at the part per billion level was established. Three sample preparation methods, which include two methylation methods and one silylation method, have been evaluated. Chromatographic instruments including GC/MS, GC/ECD, and GC/FID have been used. Silylation of 2,6-DFBA combined with GC/MS analysis has proven to be the best method in this study, due to the low detection limits (part per trillion) achieved, and the stability of the 2,6-DFBA silyl derivative. A GC/MS instrument calibration curve was established, a C-well water sample was analyzed …

Toward Effective And Ethical Drug Abuse Prevention Policies: The Case Against Indiscriminate Drug Testing, Robert Eugene Gladd Jan 1998

Toward Effective And Ethical Drug Abuse Prevention Policies: The Case Against Indiscriminate Drug Testing, Robert Eugene Gladd

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

For an increasing breadth of organizational domains, a negative illicit drug screen result has become the final and paramount criterion for admission and/or continuing participation. Such a policy is vigorously promoted to the private sector by government and vendors of testing services as an inexpensive and vital tool for suppressing drug abuse. This policy, however, can been shown to be at once empirically unwarranted, methodologically dubious, constitutionally impermissible, and ethically unsustainable. Reducing the harm attributable to illicit intoxication is a legitimate and worthy social goal. The ends, however, cannot justify such means of indiscriminate and intrusive surveillance.

The Relationship Between Managerial Holdings And Performance: An Empirical Study On The Restaurant Industry, Young Kwi Kim Jan 1998

The Relationship Between Managerial Holdings And Performance: An Empirical Study On The Restaurant Industry, Young Kwi Kim

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The relationship between managerial stock holdings and performance, measured by profitability, operating efficiency, and stock return, was examined for the publicly traded restaurant companies during the period of 1995-1996. Additionally, the study investigated whether the degree of association between managerial ownership and performance, as measured by the same variables, differs across three groups identified by the range of managerial ownership; The empirical results support that managerial ownership has a positive impact on most of the performance variables (i.e. operating efficiency and profitability). Firm size, a control variable, was also found to be significantly associated with profitability, operating efficiency, and stock …

Howells, Dickinson, Lewis: An Exercise In Reading The Interracial Canon, Craig Andrew Magee Jan 1998

Howells, Dickinson, Lewis: An Exercise In Reading The Interracial Canon, Craig Andrew Magee

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Howells, Dickinson, Lewis: An Exercise in Reading the Interracial Canon has two purposes. First, it offers detailed readings of three American novels: An Imperative Duty by William Dean Howells (1891), What Answer? by Anna Dickinson (1868), and Kingsblood Royal by Sinclair Lewis (1947). These readings are accomplished within the context of the "interracial canon", a set of writings dealing with the expression of various aspects of interracial relationships. The interracial canon, as well as its specialized vocabulary and unique theoretical outlook, is roughly sketched in an introduction and several appendices.

Recovery And Regeneration Of Lithium Manganese Oxide From Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries, Santosh Mathew Jan 1998

Recovery And Regeneration Of Lithium Manganese Oxide From Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries, Santosh Mathew

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study presents a method for recovering and regenerating Lithium Manganese Oxide (LMO) from spent Lithium-polymer batteries in order to recycle it in an environmentally friendly way. Two different processes for separating LMO were developed and the environmental impact of the two processes was analyzed. A process for relithiating the lithium-deficient LMO after recovery was also developed. Experiments were carried out to determine the regeneration chemical process parameters, and process conditions were optimized for the best spinel LMO formation. Various physical and chemical analysis of the regenerated LMO showed that its all major characteristics, such as crystal structure and manganese …

Striptease: An Anthropological View, Angela Lee Ramsey Jan 1998

Striptease: An Anthropological View, Angela Lee Ramsey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This following study serves as an attempt to apply theoretical questions to the phenomenon of striptease. I argue that striptease can be more fully understood as an act guided by the rules of performance. Strippers, and to a lesser extent the audience, can then be seen as actors employing a fantasy phase to sustain their respective roles within the charade of performance sex. Strippers and audiences are also players within the concept of performance itself, meaning they are simultaneously subject to and authors of the phenomenon. Using a biosocial approach, I explore the psychological, cultural, and physiological, etc., cues that …

Equilibrium Studies Of Ion Sorption On Zeolitized Tuff From Rainier Mesa, Nye County, Nevada, Derek Alan Sloop Jan 1998

Equilibrium Studies Of Ion Sorption On Zeolitized Tuff From Rainier Mesa, Nye County, Nevada, Derek Alan Sloop

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The partitioning of solutes between the solid mineral and aqueous phase frequently controls the fate and transport of contaminants in the subsurface environment. Consequently, parametric studies were performed to investigate the equilibrium sorption of Pb(II), Sr(II), CrO{dollar}\sb4\sp{2-}{dollar} and SeO{dollar}\sb3\sp{2-}{dollar} ions on zeolitized tuff from Rainier Mesa, Nevada, and on clinoptilolite from Jordan Valley, Oregon. The fractional uptake of the ions on the zeolitized tuff was investigated so that sorption isotherms and partitioning coefficients describing the affinity of the ions for the zeolitized tuff could be calculated. The fractional uptake of the ions on the clinoptilolite was investigated so that a …

Development Of A Phosphotriesterase Enzyme Assay For Determination Of Organophosphate Pesticides, Yan Wang Jan 1998

Development Of A Phosphotriesterase Enzyme Assay For Determination Of Organophosphate Pesticides, Yan Wang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Phosphotriesterase catalyzes the hydrolysis of a wide range of organophosphate insecticides such as paraoxon and parathion and nerve toxins such as soman and sarin. This project resulted in the development of novel phosphotriesterase enzyme assays to measure paraoxon and other representatives of the organophosphate pesticides. The assay is based on a substrate-dependent change in pH at the local vicinity of the enzyme. This enzyme, which was labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), was immobilized on polymethylmethacrylate beads and the pH change is monitored through the pH-sensitive quantum yield of FITC. Analytes were measured using a KinExA fluorescence analyzer. This assay can …

Physician-Assisted Suicide: The Courts Leave It To The States, David Wayne Newton Jan 1998

Physician-Assisted Suicide: The Courts Leave It To The States, David Wayne Newton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In Vacco v. Quill and Washington v. Glucksberg, the Supreme Court ruled that laws in New York and Washington prohibiting physician-assisted suicide violated neither the Due Process nor the Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Court overturned decisions from the Second and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeal. The Court stated these decisions do not prevent a state from enacting legislation approving assisted suicide, but there is no protection of such under the Constitution. This thesis examines the legal reasoning used by the two Courts of Appeal in their decisions and the Supreme Court in its decision. There is …

A Diachronic Analysis Of Porotic Hyperostosis In Prehistoric Populations Of Northern Chile, Maria Sloan Hart Jan 1998

A Diachronic Analysis Of Porotic Hyperostosis In Prehistoric Populations Of Northern Chile, Maria Sloan Hart

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A macroscopic analysis of 604 skeletal remains was undertaken at the Museo Arqueologico de San Miguel de Azapa (MASMA) in order to ascertain the rates of porotic hyperostosis in the prehistoric populations of northern Chile. Porotic hyperostosis has been recognized as being a useful indicator of nutritional stress, in particular, iron-deficiency anemia. In the Americas, this pathology has primarily been associated with maize-dependency and pathogen load. Contrary to expectations, results reveal that pre-agricultural populations have 93% of porotic hyperostosis while the agricultural populations show a rate of 66%. This data does not support the maize-dependency model. It is suggested, instead, …

An Examination Of Conflict In Developing Relationships, Amy Elisabeth Wagner Jan 1998

An Examination Of Conflict In Developing Relationships, Amy Elisabeth Wagner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Conflict is an unavoidable component of interpersonal relationships. The manner in which relational partners manage conflict is likely to change over the developmental course of the relationship. Additionally, the masculine or feminine attitudes an individual holds at the time of conflict impact the type of conflict strategy he or she will employ; A review of literature demonstrated a need for research in the area of gender communication and conflict. This thesis explored how conflict behaviors and degree of relational intimacy are mediated by masculine and feminine attitudes. Survey research was conducted to determine if males and females reported significantly different …

Utilization Of Therapeutic Touch In Clients Diagnosed With Chronic Pain, Rosa Matonti Jan 1998

Utilization Of Therapeutic Touch In Clients Diagnosed With Chronic Pain, Rosa Matonti

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Chronic pain is one of the most pervasive and expensive health care problems in society today. Fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis are chronic disease states which currently have no cure. A common complaint among these patients is constant and unremitting pain, which often worsens with inactivity. At this time treatment for both disease processes is essentially palliative, supportive and aimed at symptom relief; A quasi experimental design was used to determine if there were any significant differences in pain perception between persons with FM or RA receiving therapeutic touch (TT) and a placebo treatment (PT). Sixty-one subjects served as their own …

Constructing Deseret, Dana Boam Jan 1998

Constructing Deseret, Dana Boam

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Constructing Deseret is an examination of the epistemological assumption that perfect knowledge equals perfect being. It follows my progression as a poet from imitation of Yeats and Shakespeare, and traditional forms, such as sonnet, villanelle and haiku, to the investigation and validation of my own styles and forms. For the early poems the reaching of insight and wisdom is the goal of the poem. Next I look at nature and the world as a source of knowledge and standard of perfection. What follows is a rejection of the pursuit of education/perfection in order to embrace a plain looking at self, …

Many women in the United States are living in a paradox. While changes in the American culture have led to significant improvements in women's lives, they still are frequently exposed to discriminatory policies and actions. This study examines the United States military, which is a specific institution that embodies this paradox. While the military offers women certain opportunities, such as a college education, travel and adventure, it is still steeped in male domination and gender discrimination. Using a review of secondary sources, this study explores the discourses relating to power, gender and sexuality in the military, which form the basis …

Semiotic Analysis Of A Versace Visual Myth, William Earl Taylor Jan 1998

Semiotic Analysis Of A Versace Visual Myth, William Earl Taylor

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study analyzes the mythical religious imagery of Gianni Versace through a visual semiotic analysis. The image being examined has characteristics of the religious martyrdom of St. Sebastian. Analyzing the St. Sebastian image via semiotics allows the visual message, produced by Gianni Versace, to be examined at multiple levels. Decoding this visual message allows for an understanding of ideologies, cultures, and possibly the maintenance of the status quo; Semiotics is a method of breaking down the visual sign to understand the visual messages. Semiotics contains three components, which are the signifier, the signified, and the sign. Each component, the signifier, …
