Assessing Silica And Dissolved Oxygen Effects On Copper Corrosion Control In Southern Nevada Water Treatment And Supply System, Abdel-Rahman M Toubat Jan 1998

Assessing Silica And Dissolved Oxygen Effects On Copper Corrosion Control In Southern Nevada Water Treatment And Supply System, Abdel-Rahman M Toubat

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A pilot plant study was performed to investigate both the effect of silica on the corrosion process in the water system, and the effect of increased oxygen concentration resulting from ozonation on copper corrosion in the water system. The piping system used in the pilot plant resembled a household piping system, and consisted of four loops of copper pipes. Silica was added to the finished water before entering the loops at three different concentrations and corrosion was monitored by measuring copper concentration in first-draw weekly samples taken from the pilot system. Silica addition was monitored on a daily basis. Alkalinity, …

Navigational Fuzzy Logic Control Of An Autonomous Vehicle, Neil Eugene Hodge Jan 1998

Navigational Fuzzy Logic Control Of An Autonomous Vehicle, Neil Eugene Hodge

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The control of an autonomous passenger vehicle to reach a target amid static and dynamic obstacles is presented. To accommodate various model and environmental uncertainties, fuzzy logic is used in designing the vehicle's controller. The controller evaluates sensor information and outputs signals to change the vehicle's steering and throttle angles. To emulate human behavior, the controller is divided into separate modules. Each module deals with a specific navigational problem such as target steering, target throttle control, cornering throttle control, collision avoidance steering, and collision avoidance throttle control. Several simulation examples are included.

Context Dependencies For Younger And Older Adults In Learning A 4-Key Motor Sequence, Andrew James Meyers Jan 1998

Context Dependencies For Younger And Older Adults In Learning A 4-Key Motor Sequence, Andrew James Meyers

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The role environmental context has on performance level may change based on the skill being learned and the performer of that skill. The present study was designed to examine the role of environmental context in the learning of a 4-key motor sequence task. The present study had two primary purposes: first, replicating findings of a limited context effect in younger adults, and second, extending the findings to older adults to look at changes related to aging and environmental context. ANOVA results revealed no significant context effect in the present study for younger adults, and therefore comparisons between younger and older …

Nontraditional Students In Higher Education: Meeting Their Needs As Learners, Mary K. Bendixen-Noe, Carmen Giebelhaus

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The research literature indicates nontraditional students in higher education are different from their traditional counterparts. Understanding our university clientele is important in being able to meet their needs. Instructors are encouraged to analyze their teaching strategies and to incorporate those which can further aid older students in their educational pursuits.

The Supermarket Supply Chain In Shanghai, Gavin Sinclair, Ananth Iyer, Jane Anderson Jan 1998

The Supermarket Supply Chain In Shanghai, Gavin Sinclair, Ananth Iyer, Jane Anderson

Department of Management Faculty Publications

The authors conducted a series of structured interviews with managers of ten supermarket chains in Shanghai to compare supermarket business practices in Shanghai with those in the United States, emphasizing logistics management issues. Shanghai supermarkets tend to be smaller than U.S. stores, but the store layout and product selection are similar in both countries. While the Shanghai supermarkets have modern scanning equipment, they do little quantitative sales or inventory analysis.

Multiresolution Detection Of Spiculated Lesions In Digital Mammograms, Sheng Liu, Charles F. Babbs, Edward Delp Jan 1998

Multiresolution Detection Of Spiculated Lesions In Digital Mammograms, Sheng Liu, Charles F. Babbs, Edward Delp

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper we present a novel multiresolution scheme for the detection of spiculated lesions in digital mammograms. First, a multiresolution representation of the original mammogram is obtained using a linear phase nonseparable 2-D wavelet transform. A set of features is then extracted at each resolution in the wavelet pyramid for every pixel. This approach addresses the difficulty of predetermining the neighborhood size for feature extraction to characterize objects that may appear in different sizes. Detection is performed from the coarsest resolution to the finest resolution using a binary tree classifier. This top-down approach requires less computation by starting with …

The Yellowman Tapes, Barre Toelken Jan 1998

The Yellowman Tapes, Barre Toelken

English Faculty Publications

This article considers the final disposal of field-recorded tapes that are believed by the informant's family to embody certain dangers to researchers, to the natural world, and to themselves. Motives for keeping or destroying the tapes are discussed in the light of modern concerns such as the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, Navajo worldview, scholarly interests, fieldwork ethics, and personal responsibilities of the fieldworker. I espouse the view that folklorists stand to learn more and do better work when scholarly decisions are guided by the culture we study, even when taking this course causes disruption in our academic …

The Medical Savings Account Provision Of The Hipaa: Is It Sound Health And Tax Policy?, Danshera Cords Jan 1998

The Medical Savings Account Provision Of The Hipaa: Is It Sound Health And Tax Policy?, Danshera Cords

Seattle University Law Review

This Comment argues that the Medical Savings Account (MSA) provision of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) fails to meet the goals of either tax policy or health policy. As a result of this failure, the demonstration program should be redesigned to provide valid and reliable information about whether the availability of tax-preferred MSAs will decrease the affordability of health care and its availability to the less healthy.
