Underachievement In Gifted Students, Deborah Langenderfer Nagle

Graduate Research Papers

This study reflected on literature concerning gifted students who underachieve in school. Its purpose was to review the literature to examine the various definitions of underachievement, the characteristics of gifted underachievers, the risk factors for underachievement related to gifted students and the existence of promising interventions to ameliorate underachievement. The writer concluded that underachievement is a discrepancy related to performance behaviors that can be changed. She found that positive change can best be accomplished by the use of individualized interventions involving both the school and the family.

Bibliotherapy : A Technique To Meet The Social And Emotional Needs Of Gifted Adolescents, Carlotta Paul

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of developmental bibliotherapy as an instructional technique for resolving social and emotional problems of gifted adolescents. By means of a review of educational and psychological literature, the writer gathered data about the effectiveness of developmental bibliotherapy in treating the social and emotional problems of the gifted described by Delisle and others.

The lack of bibliotherapeutic empirical studies using gifted adolescents as subjects and conflicting studies on the effectiveness of bibliotherapy to alter social and personality problems led the author to conclude that developmental bibliotherapy is still an experimental technique. However, …

"Yer Outa Here!" A Framework For Analyzing The Potential Exclusion Of Expert Testimony Under The Federal Rules Of Evidence, Stephen D. Easton Jan 1998

"Yer Outa Here!" A Framework For Analyzing The Potential Exclusion Of Expert Testimony Under The Federal Rules Of Evidence, Stephen D. Easton

University of Richmond Law Review

It does not take long for even a casual observer of criminal and civil trials to make two observations about expert witnesses. The first of these observations comes almost immediately: experts are vitally important to the judicial process. In many trials, the outcome largely depends upon which set of impressively credentialed experts the jurors (and the judge) believe. The second observation generally comes later than the first: a significant amount of shoddy "science," phony logic, faulty analysis, sleight of hand, and other assorted junk enters the courtroom dressed up in the emperor's clothes of expert testimony.

The Collapse And Fall Of Floating Buffer Zones: The Court Clarifies Analysis For Reviewing Speech-Restrictive Injunctions In Schenk V. Pro-Choice Network, Amy E. Miller Jan 1998

The Collapse And Fall Of Floating Buffer Zones: The Court Clarifies Analysis For Reviewing Speech-Restrictive Injunctions In Schenk V. Pro-Choice Network, Amy E. Miller

University of Richmond Law Review

The freedom of speech, although a predominant First Amendment principle, does not create an absolute right and remains subject to limitations for appropriate reasons, such as when the exercise of free speech encroaches upon the rights of others. Particularly sensitive situations arise when courts impose restrictions upon anti-abortion protestors in an attempt to protect the rights of patients and providers at abortion clinics. Indeed, despite a woman's long established right to obtain an abortion, emotionally charged demonstrations and recurrent anti-choice violence persist outside abortion clinics around the nation. Given that such practices induce stress and other health risks to women …

Students' Rights And How They Are Wronged, Nadine Strossen Jan 1998

Students' Rights And How They Are Wronged, Nadine Strossen

University of Richmond Law Review

Defending and enhancing the rights of students and young people has always been a major priority for the American Civil Liberties Union. One reason is that the rights of our nation's youth are always especially embattled - not surprisingly, since they are not yet eligible to vote and, therefore, lack political power.

Antitrust And Trade Regulation Law, Michael F. Urbanski, James R. Creekmore Jan 1998

Antitrust And Trade Regulation Law, Michael F. Urbanski, James R. Creekmore

University of Richmond Law Review

The antitrust laws are a minefield for the uninitiated. Indicative of this reality is the fact that there were no successful civil lawsuits alleging a violation of the antitrust laws brought in Virginia over the past year. A number of conspiracy, monopolization and price discrimination cases were attempted, but they all failed for a variety of reasons outlined in greater detail below. In contrast to the national trend, no antitrust cases with regard to health care were decided in Virginia during the past year. The absence of such cases represents a dramatic change from previous experience, which perhaps reflects the …

Assessing Silica And Dissolved Oxygen Effects On Copper Corrosion Control In Southern Nevada Water Treatment And Supply System, Abdel-Rahman M Toubat

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A pilot plant study was performed to investigate both the effect of silica on the corrosion process in the water system, and the effect of increased oxygen concentration resulting from ozonation on copper corrosion in the water system. The piping system used in the pilot plant resembled a household piping system, and consisted of four loops of copper pipes. Silica was added to the finished water before entering the loops at three different concentrations and corrosion was monitored by measuring copper concentration in first-draw weekly samples taken from the pilot system. Silica addition was monitored on a daily basis. Alkalinity, …

Navigational Fuzzy Logic Control Of An Autonomous Vehicle, Neil Eugene Hodge Jan 1998

Navigational Fuzzy Logic Control Of An Autonomous Vehicle, Neil Eugene Hodge

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The control of an autonomous passenger vehicle to reach a target amid static and dynamic obstacles is presented. To accommodate various model and environmental uncertainties, fuzzy logic is used in designing the vehicle's controller. The controller evaluates sensor information and outputs signals to change the vehicle's steering and throttle angles. To emulate human behavior, the controller is divided into separate modules. Each module deals with a specific navigational problem such as target steering, target throttle control, cornering throttle control, collision avoidance steering, and collision avoidance throttle control. Several simulation examples are included.

Context Dependencies For Younger And Older Adults In Learning A 4-Key Motor Sequence, Andrew James Meyers Jan 1998

Context Dependencies For Younger And Older Adults In Learning A 4-Key Motor Sequence, Andrew James Meyers

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The role environmental context has on performance level may change based on the skill being learned and the performer of that skill. The present study was designed to examine the role of environmental context in the learning of a 4-key motor sequence task. The present study had two primary purposes: first, replicating findings of a limited context effect in younger adults, and second, extending the findings to older adults to look at changes related to aging and environmental context. ANOVA results revealed no significant context effect in the present study for younger adults, and therefore comparisons between younger and older …

The Supermarket Supply Chain In Shanghai, Gavin Sinclair, Ananth Iyer, Jane Anderson Jan 1998

The Supermarket Supply Chain In Shanghai, Gavin Sinclair, Ananth Iyer, Jane Anderson

Department of Management Faculty Publications

The authors conducted a series of structured interviews with managers of ten supermarket chains in Shanghai to compare supermarket business practices in Shanghai with those in the United States, emphasizing logistics management issues. Shanghai supermarkets tend to be smaller than U.S. stores, but the store layout and product selection are similar in both countries. While the Shanghai supermarkets have modern scanning equipment, they do little quantitative sales or inventory analysis.
