A Cluster Analytic Test Of The Transtheoretical Model Applied To Exercise Behavior, Gregory J. Norman Jan 1998

A Cluster Analytic Test Of The Transtheoretical Model Applied To Exercise Behavior, Gregory J. Norman

Open Access Dissertations

An empirical typology was created to test the application of the Transtheoretical Model (TIM) to exercise behavior. It was reasoned that if a meaningful typology of exercise could be created that depicted construct relationships posited by the TIM, then this would be supportive evidence for the application of the model to understanding behavior change related to exercise. A sample of 342 adults between the ages of 18 and 75 completed a survey through a random telephone interview. The sample was 62% female, 95% white, and an average age of 43 years. The sample was randomly split into two subsamples to …

Market And Organizational Factors Associated With Teaching Hospital Participation In Strategic Hospital Alliances, James D. Bramble Jan 1998

Market And Organizational Factors Associated With Teaching Hospital Participation In Strategic Hospital Alliances, James D. Bramble

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated market and organizational factors that influence the strategic decisions of teaching hospitals to participate in strategic hospital alliances (SHAs). It described the characteristics of both teaching hospitals and the health care environment in which they operate. This research also examines the association of these factors with the strategic position of teaching hospitals in terms of their dominance in the market or within their organizations.

The theoretical model used two concepts from institutional theory--coercive and normative pressures. It was argued that coercive pressures in the market facilitated the decision to participate in SHAs and gain market and Organizational …

Gene Delivery By Negatively Charged Ternary Complexes Of Dna, Cationic Liposomes And Transferrin Or Fusigenic Peptides, Sérgio Simões, Vladimir Slepushkin, R. Caspar, Maria C. Pedroso De Lima, Nejat Düzgüneş Jan 1998

Gene Delivery By Negatively Charged Ternary Complexes Of Dna, Cationic Liposomes And Transferrin Or Fusigenic Peptides, Sérgio Simões, Vladimir Slepushkin, R. Caspar, Maria C. Pedroso De Lima, Nejat Düzgüneş

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Potential problems with the use of viral vectors for gene therapy necessitate the development of efficient nonviral vectors. The association of transferrin, or the pH-sensitive peptide GALA, with cationic liposomes composed of 1,2-dioleoyl-3-(trimethylammonium) propane and its equimolar mixture with dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine, under conditions where the liposome/DNA complex is negatively charged, drastically increased luciferase expression from pCMVluc. The percentage of cells transfected, measured by β-galactosidase expression, was also increased by about 10-fold. The zeta potential of the ternary complexes was lower than that of the liposome/DNA complexes. Transfection activity of positively charged complexes was also enhanced by association with transferrin, GALA or …

Public Reason, Abortion, And Cloning, John M. Finnis Jan 1998

Public Reason, Abortion, And Cloning, John M. Finnis

Journal Articles

Every society, liberal or illiberal, takes a public stand on the question whether abortion is or is not a form of criminal activity. If that question were left to private judgment, people who judge it homicide would be entitled to use force to prevent their fellow citizens engaging in it.

The need for the law and public policy to take a stand has become more and more obvious for two reasons. The first has to do with the standard purpose of abortion, as that term is commonly used: to end the life of a fetus/unborn child. As Jeffrey Reiman argues …

Messages Of Individualism In French, Spanish, And American Television Advertising, Ronald E. Taylor, Joyce M. Wolburg Jan 1998

Messages Of Individualism In French, Spanish, And American Television Advertising, Ronald E. Taylor, Joyce M. Wolburg

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Individualism is a central value in French, Spanish, and American cultures. However, what it means to be an individual and how this is expressed varies among cultures. This study explores the ways that television advertising reflects individualism in French, Spanish, and American cultures and uses a qualitative approach that allows coding categories to emerge from the three countries' samples rather than imposing previously defined categories from a single culture. The study identifies six main advertising message strategies across the three cultures: the Efficient Individual, the Sensual Individual, the Attractive/Healthy Individual, the Esteemed Individual, the Performant(e) Individual, and the Intellectual Individual. …

Children's Rights And Family Autonomy In The South African Context: A Comment On Children's Rights Under The Final Constitution, Tshepo L. Mosikatsana Jan 1998

Children's Rights And Family Autonomy In The South African Context: A Comment On Children's Rights Under The Final Constitution, Tshepo L. Mosikatsana

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This Article investigates the nature and extent of the protection granted to children's rights in the South African Constitution. It concludes that the child-centered approach of the Constitution entitles children, as independent actors, to certain fundamental rights. Acknowledging both the parent-centered nature of the existing South African legal framework and the entrenched support for practices, many rooted in indigenous law and tradition, that contribute to the oppression of children, the author argues that the constitutionalization of these rights will contribute to the betterment of children in South Africa, proving to be more than mere moral exhortation. Under apartheid in South …
