Acts Of Resistance: Nurses' Personal Narratives, Maryanne Garon Dnsc Nov 1998

Acts Of Resistance: Nurses' Personal Narratives, Maryanne Garon Dnsc

Dissertations

Acts of resistance can be expressions of creativity, protest or non-cooperation by oppressed groups. Resistance is seen as always present in the face of domination. Acts of resistance can help us to understand how the powerless mediate power relations, and they can actually give hope to the powerless. This study looked at the issues of power and resistance through critical and feminist perspective. A central concept of feminist theory is that women, and thus nurses as a women's profession, are oppressed. This study looked at female nurses' acts of resistance, which were defined as speaking up or taking action about …

Test Of Variables Of Attention (Tova) Utility In Differentiating Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Subtypes, Steven Andrew Westby Nov 1998

Test Of Variables Of Attention (Tova) Utility In Differentiating Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Subtypes, Steven Andrew Westby

Theses and Dissertations

Research has indicated that Continuous Performance Tests (CPTs) can differentiate Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity (ADHD) subjects from controls without any psychiatric illness. However, CPTs have neither accurately differentiated ADHD children from those with other psychiatric disorders—nor differentiated subtypes of ADHD from each other. The Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA), a new CPT, has several advantages over its predecessors which may allow the TOVA to be more effective in this differentiation process.

Data from ADHD subjects was selected from children who were administered the TOVA as part of their evaluation for ADHD at Lakeland Mental Health Center in Moorhead, MN, the Child Evaluation …

Fathers And Parental Leave Revisited, Martin H. Malin Nov 1998

Fathers And Parental Leave Revisited, Martin H. Malin

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article continues the author's work on parental leave and fathers' involvement with their children in light of several years under the Family and Medical Leave Act. It discusses why paternal involvement is important to children, fathers and mothers. It also explores the link between fathers' taking parental leave and their later involvement in the lives of their children. It focuses on two barriers to paternal use of parental leave: economics and workplace hostility. It examines developments under collective bargaining agreements, unemployment compensation laws and the FMLA. It finds that evolving arbitral interpretations of collective bargaining agreements and judicial interpretations …

Neonaticide: Less Than Murder?, James J. Dvorak Nov 1998

Neonaticide: Less Than Murder?, James J. Dvorak

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This comment examines the crime of infanticide. The comment includes a brief history of infanticide and an explanation of how the crime is treated in common law countries. A comparison of the United States and other common law countries leads the author to suggest that the United States should adopt an infanticide statute similar to that of other common law countries.

Remedies And The Psychology Of Ownership, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski, Forest Jourden Nov 1998

Remedies And The Psychology Of Ownership, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski, Forest Jourden

Vanderbilt Law Review

It is surprising that there are cases like Boomer v. Atlantic Cement Co.I The plaintiffs in Boomer were eight homeowners seeking injunctive relief against the dust and noise produced by a neighboring cement plant, the Atlantic Cement Company. The trial court declared Atlantic Cement a nuisance, but refused to enjoin the plant's operations. Instead, the court awarded monetary damages to the plaintiffs for the loss in value to their property attributable to the defendant's activities. The dissatisfied plaintiffs appealed, but ultimately New York's highest court declared that they were not entitled to injunctive relief. That the plaintiffs sued the plant …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Soleus muscle fibers from the rat display a reduction in peak power and Ca2+ sensitivity after hindlimb suspension. To examine human responses to non-weight bearing, we obtained soleus biopsies from eight adult men before and immediately after 17 days of bed rest (BR). Single chemically skinned fibers were mounted between a force transducer and a servo-controlled position motor and activated with maximal (isotonic properties) and/or submaximal (Ca2+ sensitivity) levels of free Ca2+. Gel electrophoresis indicated that all pre- and post-BR fibers expressed type I myosin heavy chain. Post-BR fibers obtained from one subject displayed increases in …

The Treaty Power And American Federalism, Curtis A. Bradley Nov 1998

The Treaty Power And American Federalism, Curtis A. Bradley

Michigan Law Review

For much of this century, American foreign affairs law has assumed that there is a sharp distinction between what is foreign and what is domestic, between what is external and what is internal. This assumption underlies a dual regime of constitutional law, in which federal regulation of foreign affairs is subject to a different, and generally more relaxed, set of constitutional restraints than federal regulation of domestic affairs. In what is perhaps its most famous endorsement of this proposition, the Supreme Court stated in 1936 that "the federal power over external affairs [is] in origin and essential character different from …

Equal Rights, Special Rights, And The Nature Of Antidiscrimination Law, Peter J. Rubin Nov 1998

Equal Rights, Special Rights, And The Nature Of Antidiscrimination Law, Peter J. Rubin

Michigan Law Review

Despite the continued belief held by most Americans that certain characteristics should not form the basis for adverse decisions about individuals in employment, housing, public accommodations, and the provision of a wide range of governmental and private services and opportunities, antidiscrimination laws have increasingly come under attack on the ground that they provide members of the group against whom discrimination is forbidden with "special rights." The "special rights" objection has been voiced most strongly, but not exclusively, against laws that seek to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. This line of attack has not always been effective, but …

Evaluation Of Switchgrass Rhizosphere Microflora For Enhancing Seedling Yield And Nutrient Uptake, John J. Brejda, Lowell E. Moser, Kenneth P. Vogel Nov 1998

Evaluation Of Switchgrass Rhizosphere Microflora For Enhancing Seedling Yield And Nutrient Uptake, John J. Brejda, Lowell E. Moser, Kenneth P. Vogel

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Many rhizosphere microorganisms enhance nutrient uptake and plant growth, but their effectiveness can vary with host species and with genotype within species. This study evaluated the effectiveness of rhizosphere microflora indigenous to the rhizosphere of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) for enhancing seedling yield and nutrient uptake. Switchgrass roots and rhizosphere soil were collected from native prairies and seeded stands in Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Virginia, and North Carolina. Seedlings of four switchgrass cultivars were inoculated with root fragments and rhizosphere soil from each collection, fertilized with a nutrient solution, and gown in steamed sand for 12 wk in a …
