Health Professions Schools In Service To The Nation: Evaluation Report, Sherril B. Gelmon, Barbara A. Holland, Anu F. Shinnamon
Higher Education
The Health Professions Schools in Service to the Nation Program (HPSISN) was a multi-site, multi-year program designed to explore service learning as a tool for curricular reform within health professions education, and as a method for effectively preparing future professionals for work in a new health delivery system. With sponsorship from the Corporation for National Service and The Pew Charitable Trusts, 20 institutions were invited to participate from 1995 to 1998. The program was administered by the Center for the Health Professions at the University of California at San Francisco. A project-wide evaluation was commissioned at the beginning of the …

Prying, Spying, And Lying: Intrusive Newsgathering And What The Law Should Do About It, Lyrissa Barnett Lidsky

The media’s use of intrusive newsgathering techniques poses an increasing threat to individual privacy. Courts currently resolve the overwhelming majority of conflicts in favor of the media. This is not because the First Amendment bars the imposition of tort liability on the media for its newsgathering practices. It does not. Rather, tort law has failed to seize the opportunity to create meaningful privacy protection. Most torts that affect newsgathering protect privacy only incidentally, and the tort of intrusion, which addresses newsgathering more directly, has been interpreted so narrowly that it provides little or no protection from the most common types …

Beliefs In Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Gail Steketee, Randy O. Frost, Iris Cohen
Beliefs In Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Gail Steketee, Randy O. Frost, Iris Cohen
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Several types of beliefs have been hypothesized to be associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), including responsibility for harm, need to control thoughts, overestimates of threat, intolerance of uncertainty, and beliefs about the consequences of anxiety and capacity to cope. The present study compared 62 subjects with OCD, 45 with other anxiety disorders (AD) and 34 controls, using 3 measures of OCD-related beliefs. OCD subjects scored higher than AD and control samples on 2 general belief measures. A closer analysis of specific belief domains indicated that OCD subjects scored higher than AD and control subjects on all 6 specific belief domains …

Characterization Of Sequences Associated With Position-Effect Variegation At Pericentric Sites In Drosophila Heterochromatin, D Cryderman, M Cuaycong, Sarah C.R. Elgin, L Wallrath
Biology Faculty Research
In a variety of organisms, euchromatic genes brought into juxtaposition with pericentric heterochromatin show position-effect variegation (PEV), a silencing of gene expression in a subset of the cells in which the gene is normally expressed. Previously, a P-element mobilization screen identified transgenic Drosophila stocks showing PEV of an hsp70-white+ reporter gene; transgenes in many of these stocks map to the chromocenter of polytene chromosome. A screen at an elevated temperature identified two stocks that under standard culture temperatures show complete repression of the hsp70-white+ transgene. The transgenes in both cases map to the chromocenter of polytene chromosomes. Different types of …

The Revolution In Higher Education, James V. Koch
The Revolution In Higher Education, James V. Koch
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
Joseph Schumpeter, the Austrian born economist and social historian who spent a major part of his academic career at Harvard, was a cogent observer of how societies develop. His Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy is still considered a classic. Schumpeter spoke of "perennial gales of creative destruction" (often technological) that shock societies and force change. The advent of electricity and the coming of the automobile illustrate technologies that created new power arrangements and destroyed or modified existing institutions. Higher education is now in the midst of a Schumpeterian "gale of creative destruction"--a revolution, many say. After almost 150 years of reliance …
The Qualitative Dimension Of Fourth Amendment "Reasonableness", Sherry F. Colb
The Qualitative Dimension Of Fourth Amendment "Reasonableness", Sherry F. Colb
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Supreme Court doctrine protects two seemingly distinct kinds of interests under the heading of privacy rights: one "substantive," the other "procedural." The Fourth Amendment guarantee against "unreasonable searches and seizures" has been generally interpreted to protect procedural privacy. Searches are typically defined as governmental inspections of activities and locations in which an individual has a reasonable expectation of privacy from observation. In the typical case, this reasonable expectation of privacy may be breached only where the government has acquired a quantitatively substantial objective basis for believing that the search would uncover evidence of a crime. Substantive privacy rights have not …

Multiple Out-Of-Home Placements & Children's Psychosocial Functioning, Brittawni Lee Olson
Student Work
This study examined the relationship between multiple out-of-home placements and children’s psychosocial functioning. Psychosocial functioning was measured by the number of mental health services recommended to the child by a licensed mental health professional and the number of negative behaviors exhibited by the child as recorded in the caseworkers’ narratives or mental health professional’s report. Independent variables included total number of placements experienced per child and average placement duration. Data were extracted from the administrative database and case files of the State of Nebraska Foster Care Review Board Tracking System (N=443). In addition to the number of out-of-home placements and …

Democracy Behind Barbed Wire: Examining The Political Culture Of Japanese American Evacuees, Allen Atkinson
Democracy Behind Barbed Wire: Examining The Political Culture Of Japanese American Evacuees, Allen Atkinson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This paper explores the relationship between culture and political behavior through an investigation of those Japanese Americans who were denied due process and imprisoned during World War Two simply for being of Japanese descent. Military necessity was the reason cited for the government's action, although racism, war hysteria and economic competition also played a major role.
At the time there was a general belief among Caucasian Americans that the Japanese in America had avoided Americanization and could not be trusted to participate in democratic processes. It was suggested that their political and civic culture was an obstacle to the achievement …

Symposium: Work And Family Introduction, Lorraine Schmall
Northern Illinois University Law Review
Work and family problems seem as numerous, and as difficult to deal with as our children. Invidious discrimination, inadequate laws, intra-family dissension all contribute to our woes. But the dialogue has begun, and problem-solving cannot be too far behind.
Towards A Reconstructive Feminism: Reconstructing The Relationship Of Market Work And Family Work, Joan Williams
Towards A Reconstructive Feminism: Reconstructing The Relationship Of Market Work And Family Work, Joan Williams
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This article traces the separation of the work and family spheres, arising in the nineteenth century, and how this separation into traditionally male and female areas has affected women's "choice" to stay home and rear children, or to participate in the workforce. This article explains how women often fail to achieve the ideal-worker norm because of the demands on their time created by childrearing. The author ends by discussing the shortcomings of the classic strategy feminists have proposed to change domesticity's ordering of family and market work and suggests a new paradigm, called "reconstructive feminism," which eliminates the ideal-worker norm …
Women, Work And Family: Recent Economic Trends, Manuelita Ureta
Women, Work And Family: Recent Economic Trends, Manuelita Ureta
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This article presents an overview of recent economic trends in the labor force behavior of men and women. The author focuses on the factors that play a role in a woman's decision to join the work force and presents data to illustrate the current labor situation. The author concludes that government mandated minimum wages and benefits are detrimental, rather than beneficial, to low-skilled workers.
Freedom Of Speech And Injunctions In Intellectual Property Cases, Mark A. Lemley, Eugene Volokh
Freedom Of Speech And Injunctions In Intellectual Property Cases, Mark A. Lemley, Eugene Volokh
Duke Law Journal
Preliminary injunctions against libel, obscenity, and other kinds of speech are generally considered unconstitutional prior restraints. Even though libel may inflict truly irreparable harm on its victim, the most a libel plaintiff can hope for is damages, or perhaps a permanent injunction after final adjudication, not preliminary relief. Professors Lemley and Volokh argue the same rule should apply to preliminary injunctions in many copyright, trademark, right of publicity, and trade secret cases. They note that intellectual property rights, unlike other property rights, are a form of content-based, government-imposed speech restriction. The mere fact that the restriction is denominated a "property …
