Testosterone Effects On Renal Norepinephrine Content And Release In Rats With Different Y Chromosomes, Thomas J. Jones, Gail Dunphy, Amy Milsted, Daniel Ely Nov 1998

Testosterone Effects On Renal Norepinephrine Content And Release In Rats With Different Y Chromosomes, Thomas J. Jones, Gail Dunphy, Amy Milsted, Daniel Ely

Biology Faculty Research

The Y chromosome in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and stroke-prone rats has been shown to contain a locus that contributes to the hypertensive effect; both the sympathetic nervous system and testosterone may be involved. The objective of this study was to look at the effects of testosterone on renal norepinephrine (NE) release and content in the isolated perfused kidney in different Y chromosome backgrounds. The study involved male SHR, Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY), and 2 consomic strains with different Y chromosomes (n=5 to 8 per group). Adult animals were castrated, and implants containing testosterone propionate were placed at the base of …

Classifying Quality Nursing Care Initiatives: Framework For Ambulatory Surgery Nursing Practice, Beth Ann Swan Nov 1998

Classifying Quality Nursing Care Initiatives: Framework For Ambulatory Surgery Nursing Practice, Beth Ann Swan

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

The demand for information about quality is greater now than ever. Despite the significance of quality to consumers, providers, and insurers of health care, information related to this phenomenon, although plentiful, has been plagued by the lack of consistent definitions, frameworks, and outcome measurements. This inconsistency leads to the inability to compare and evaluate patient outcomes from study to study and across practice settings. Assessing recovery, including symptom distress and functioning, is increasingly significant because extended operations requiring longer anesthesia are being performed in the ambulatory surgery setting. Outcomes must be linked to specific processes, and outcome information should include …

The Differences In Health Beliefs And The Frequency Of Mammograms Among Older Women, Angela E. Hall Nov 1998

The Differences In Health Beliefs And The Frequency Of Mammograms Among Older Women, Angela E. Hall

Master's Projects

Increasing age is the primary risk factor for breast cancer, yet older women underutilize mammography for early detection. The purpose of this study was to explore any differences in perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and physician recommendation rate between older women who do and those who do not follow current mammogram screening guidelines. A convenience sample of women over 65 years old (N = 70), completed the Health Belief Model questionnaire on mammography. The findings indicate a statistical difference in the perceived benefits to mammograms between the two groups (t = 2.72, p = .008). There was no statistical difference in …

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The purpose of this case study was to identify the level of employee motivation at an Indonesian high-tech state-owned company. Comparisons were drawn between labor and management as well as Indonesian and Western industrial environments. The overall results provide insight into employee motivation and the potential for productivity improvement that should prove beneficial to management at state-owned and privately owned companies in Indonesia and the Pacific Rim. The study can also help Westerners appreciate culture differences and productivity challenges in this developing country.

Length Of Pregnancy And Birthweight Between Black And White Women, Christine Herdt Nov 1998

Length Of Pregnancy And Birthweight Between Black And White Women, Christine Herdt

Master's Projects

The pregnancies of Black women are complicated by adverse outcomes, such as prematurity and low birthweight, at twice the rate of complications in pregnancies of White women (Taylor, Katz, & Moos, 1995). Early access to and adequate utilization of prenatal care services are essential for successful pregnancy and birth outcomes (Rowley, 1994). The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in length of pregnancy and birthweight between Black and White women at risk for preterm birth in a Preterm Delivery Prevention Program. A chart review of 79 clients enrolled in the Preterm Delivery Prevention Program …

Latinos In Massachusetts: An Update, Andrés Torres, Lisa Chavez Nov 1998

Latinos In Massachusetts: An Update, Andrés Torres, Lisa Chavez

Gastón Institute Publications

This research report updates the socioeconomic picture of Latinos in Massachusetts. According to estimates contained in this report, the Latino population in Massachusetts experienced vigorous growth during the first half of the 1990s. Not since the 1990 census has there been a broad profile of this rapidly growing segment of the state’s population. This information should assist the general public in understanding some of the basic issues affecting the Hispanic community. It should also be useful to the many individuals and organizations who are concerned about the future of this community and responsible for informed decision-making: elected officials, policy makers, …

A Randomized Trial Of The Use Of Print Material And Personal Contact To Improve Mammography Uptake Among Screening Non-Attenders In Singapore, Paulin Tay Straughan, Paulin Tay Straughan, E. H. Ng, H. P. Lee Nov 1998

A Randomized Trial Of The Use Of Print Material And Personal Contact To Improve Mammography Uptake Among Screening Non-Attenders In Singapore, Paulin Tay Straughan, Paulin Tay Straughan, E. H. Ng, H. P. Lee

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The Singapore Breast Screening Project was a nationwide study inviting a random sample of women between the ages of 50 and 64 years for mammography at one of two hospital-based screening centres over two years. The current study was undertaken to determine if (1) mailed health educational material alone, or (2) the same material delivered during a home visit made to the subject and her family would increase the uptake among Singapore women who had not responded to two previous invitations for mammographic screening as part of the Project. This randomized trial employed a standard second reminder letter (R), the …

The Meeting Of Pain And Depression: Comorbidity In Women, Marta Meana Nov 1998

The Meeting Of Pain And Depression: Comorbidity In Women, Marta Meana

Psychology Faculty Research

The higher prevalence of depression in women is coupled with a higher prevalence of pain complaints. Growing evidence suggests that the comorbidity of these conditions is also proportionately higher in women than men. This paper critically reviews the empirical findings relating to gender differences in comorbid pain and depression as well as findings in support of hypothesized etiologic factors that could explain why women may be more susceptible than men to comorbidity. The empirical evidence for biogenic, psychogenic, and sociogenic explanatory models is presented, and an integration of these models is proposed as a guideline to both research and clinical …

Traditionality, Modernity, And Household Composition: Parent-Child Coresidence In Contemporary Turkey, Hakan Aykan, Douglas A. Wolf Nov 1998

Traditionality, Modernity, And Household Composition: Parent-Child Coresidence In Contemporary Turkey, Hakan Aykan, Douglas A. Wolf

Center for Policy Research

We investigate the patterns and correlates of currently married adult children’s coresidence with their parents in Turkey, using data from the 1993 Turkish Demographic and Health Survey. We are particularly interested in “traditional” patterns of coresidence—that is, coresidence with one or both of the husband’s parents—and the effects of variables measuring traditionality at the individual and contextual levels on coresidence with any parent, and with the husband’s parents. The results indicate that coresidence among currently married children is not the norm. However, the odds of coresidence with the husband’s parents, given that a couple coresides with any parent, are very …

Residential Choices And Prospective Risks Of Nursing Home Entry, Kenneth A. Couch, Duke Kao Nov 1998

Residential Choices And Prospective Risks Of Nursing Home Entry, Kenneth A. Couch, Duke Kao

Center for Policy Research

Nationally representative estimates of the prospective risk of entry into a nursing home and the likelihood of residing in a nursing home are obtained using data from the Longitudinal Study of Aging: 1984-1990. The roles of demographic characteristics, kin availability, and health status in determining entry into and residence in nursing homes is examined. Caregivers facilitate community residence and reduce the risk of nursing home entry for those with functional limitations. Dementia in combination with functional limitations increases the risk of nursing home entry.

Why There Is No Defense Of Punitive Damages, W. Kip Viscusi Nov 1998

Why There Is No Defense Of Punitive Damages, W. Kip Viscusi

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This paper is a response to the comments by David Luban and Theodore Eisenberg on my article on punitive damages to be published in the Georgetown Law Journal (1998) and entitled "The Social Costs of Punitive Damages against Corporations in Environmental and Safety Tort." Neither of these authors presents any evidence indicating that there is a determent effect of punitive damages. They suggest, however, that there could be retribution objectives or other rationales for punitive damages. In addition, they claim that punitive damages are predictable and that cognitive biases may not tilt juries against corporations. This paper reviews these diverse …

The Seca Subunit Of Escherichia Coli Preprotein Translocase Is Exposed To The Periplasm, Jerry Eichler, William Wickner Nov 1998

The Seca Subunit Of Escherichia Coli Preprotein Translocase Is Exposed To The Periplasm, Jerry Eichler, William Wickner

Dartmouth Scholarship

SecA undergoes conformational changes during translocation, inserting domains into and across the membrane or enhancing the protease resistance of these domains. We now show that some SecA bound at SecYEG is accessible from the periplasm to a membrane-impermeant probe in cells with a permeabilized outer membrane but an intact plasma membrane.

Exoy, An Adenylate Cyclase Secreted By The Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Type Iii System, Timothy L. Yahr, Amy J. Vallis, Michael Hancock, Joseph T. Barbieri, Dara W. Frank Nov 1998

Exoy, An Adenylate Cyclase Secreted By The Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Type Iii System, Timothy L. Yahr, Amy J. Vallis, Michael Hancock, Joseph T. Barbieri, Dara W. Frank

Dartmouth Scholarship

The exoenzyme S regulon is a set of coordinately regulated virulence genes of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Proteins encoded by the regulon include a type III secretion and translocation apparatus, regulators of gene expression, and effector proteins. The effector proteins include two enzymes with ADP-ribosyltransferase activity (ExoS and ExoT) and an acute cytotoxin (ExoU). In this study, we identified ExoY as a fourth effector protein of the regulon. ExoY is homologous to the extracellular adenylate cyclases of Bordetella pertussis (CyaA) and Bacillus anthracis (EF). The homology among the three adenylate cyclases is limited to two short regions, one of which possesses an …

The Legal Implications Of Psychology: Human Behavior, Behavioral Economics, And The Law Symposium: The Legal Implications Of Psychology Human Behavior, Behavioral Economics, And The Law, Stephen D. Hurd Nov 1998

The Legal Implications Of Psychology: Human Behavior, Behavioral Economics, And The Law Symposium: The Legal Implications Of Psychology Human Behavior, Behavioral Economics, And The Law, Stephen D. Hurd

Vanderbilt Law Review

Nearly all interesting legal issues require accurate predictions about human behavior to be resolved satisfactorily. Judges, policy- makers, and academics invoke mental models of individual and social behavior whenever they estimate the desirability of alternative rules, policies, or procedures. Contemporary legal scholarship has come to recognize that if these predictions are naive and intuitive, without any strong empirical grounding, they are susceptible to error and ideological bias. Something more rigorous is thus expected when normative claims are advanced, and the place of the social sciences has expanded in legal discourse to satisfy this expectation.'

Lochner In Cyberspace: The New Economic Orthodoxy Of "Rights Management", Julie E. Cohen Nov 1998

Lochner In Cyberspace: The New Economic Orthodoxy Of "Rights Management", Julie E. Cohen

Michigan Law Review

Ninety-three years ago, in Lochner v. New York, the Supreme Court struck down a maximum-working-hours law for bakers as an impermissible invasion of employer-employee liberty of contract and, by implication, of the employer's property rights in his business. Lochner came to symbolize, and was vilified for, a vision of state power as rigidly circumscribed by the operation of judicially-determined laws of social ordering. By the late 1930s, the Court had changed course and accepted that the states' police power - or, in the case of Congress, the commerce power - encompassed even protective regulation of the parameters of the private …

Preoperative Work Up: Are The Requirements Different In A Developing Country?, K M. Pal, I A. Khan, B Safdar

Department of Surgery Docs

In developing countries there is a tendency to advocate routine testing in asymptomatic healthy patients to identify undocumented significant medical conditions. A retrospective review of pre- operative laboratory investigations undertaken in patients attending the General Surgical department was performed. Three hundred and twenty patients case notes were reviewed, patients were selected on the basis of common general surgical procedures. Two hundred and sixteen patients (67.5%) did not have any associated medical illness on history and physical examination. Analysis of laboratory results showed that 42/216 (19.4%) had low hemoglobin. An abnormal chest X-ray was the next common abnormality 11/103 (10.6%). Mild …
