Paleolimnology And Paleoecology Of The Coal Valley Region, Lincoln County, Nevada, Anthony Dean Feig Jan 1998

Paleolimnology And Paleoecology Of The Coal Valley Region, Lincoln County, Nevada, Anthony Dean Feig

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

During Pleistocene time, Coal Valley, Nevada, was situated between a pluvial climatic zone to the north and a non-pluvial climactic zone to the south. The Coal Lake section represents {dollar}>{dollar}20,000 years of continuous deposition, recording a saline lake phase (Early Coal Lake) present since at least 32,000 BP, evolving to a freshwater lake (Coal Lake Intermediate) {dollar}\sim{dollar}28,000 BP. Maximum lake development (290 km{dollar}\sp2{dollar} in area) was within 2000 years of {dollar}\sim{dollar}20,000 BP, and was probably persistent through deglaciation. Ostracode ecology suggests that water salinity varied little through time, which may be indicative of consistently low ambient temperatures, high precipitation …

Homogeneous Landscape: The American Motel As A Cultural Indicator, Troy Jay Elston Jan 1998

Homogeneous Landscape: The American Motel As A Cultural Indicator, Troy Jay Elston

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The following research is an exploration of the American chain motel as a cultural indicator. Through the lens of the homogenized chain motel, connections are made between the American consumer and a general awareness of the power of marketing architecture in the United States. The motel's evolution and meaning is further explained in terms of how the consumers' needs are identified, clarified, and satisfied within a commodity driven society. In the past 40 years the market's importance on the hospitality and housing industries have proven to be highly successful, as shown through the purchasing decisions of millions of Americans continuing …

Fear Itself: Assessing The Risks Of Transporting High-Level Nuclear Waste, Fred Carl Dilger Jan 1998

Fear Itself: Assessing The Risks Of Transporting High-Level Nuclear Waste, Fred Carl Dilger

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis contrasts and compares two approaches to risk assessment as they apply to the problem of transporting high level radioactive waste to Yucca Mountain, NV. Risk assessment, a lineal descendant of cost-benefit analysis, is an increasingly popular tool for justifying policy or programmatic decisions that involve some potential for public harm. The study uses Frank Fischer's framework for policy analysis to examine the problem of transportation risk assessment and to propose a new process for risk assessment that has political legitimacy, rather than technical elegance, as its goal.

Beat Sociology: Ethnographic Journeys In Event Spaces, Jonathan R Wynn Jan 1998

Beat Sociology: Ethnographic Journeys In Event Spaces, Jonathan R Wynn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Beat Sociology: Ethnographic Journeys in Event Spaces proposes a new theory and methodology for Sociology to better investigate and describe the social experiences of individuals. I call this new set of theories and methodologies Beat Sociology--I have developed this project utilizing the work of Beat writers (Kerouac, Ginsberg and Burroughs), as well as social theorists (particularly Walter Benjamin and C. Wright Mills). Drawing from critical theory, postmodernism and ethnography, I develop three central 'themes' that help facilitate my project: identity, space, and migrancy. Through auto-ethnography I explore three types of Las Vegas spaces: event spaces, casino spaces and Fremont Street. …

Parallel Courses: Poetry And Essays, Nicole Anne Freim Jan 1998

Parallel Courses: Poetry And Essays, Nicole Anne Freim

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Parallel Courses is a creative work consisting of poetry and personal essays. The writing examines the ontology of the self, discovering and explaining the reality of the self through time and change. The major themes explored include how past experiences enhance and inhibit present relationships, both with the self and with others, and the struggle for identity in both the singular and plural sense within our relationships and lives. The writing searches to find a balance between the ties to one's history and the desires of one's present.

Waccara's Utes: Native American Equestrian Adaptations In The Eastern Great Basin, 1776-1876, Stephen P Van Hoak Jan 1998

Waccara's Utes: Native American Equestrian Adaptations In The Eastern Great Basin, 1776-1876, Stephen P Van Hoak

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The equestrian adaptations of the Western Utes of the Eastern Great Basin were distinct from the stereotypical Plains Indian adaptation to the horse. The range and mobility of the Western Utes was enhanced by their acquisition of horses, but the Utes did not abandon their diversified subsistence system to specialize in buffalo hunting as did many Plains equestrian groups. Western Ute equestrian adaptations changed and evolved throughout the nineteenth century in response to environmental, cultural, economic, and political issues. Waccara's Western Utes represented the most conspicuous stage of Native American equestrianism in the Eastern Great Basin, and the success of …

Wild Horses And The Bureau Of Land Management: A Policy Review And Critique, Julene Haworth Jan 1998

Wild Horses And The Bureau Of Land Management: A Policy Review And Critique, Julene Haworth

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The 1971 Wild Horse and Burro Act (PL 92-195) charged the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) with the management and protection of wild horses and burros on public lands. The implementation of the Act was remiss in failing to recognize the limitation of expertise within the Bureau in carrying out its new responsibilities. The lack of specialists in horse and burro management led to an inconclusive protection policy that consequently has generated conflict and controversy. Therefore, policy decisions and actions associated with management and protection programs have been subjected to charges of abuse, neglect, and corruption. This thesis will discuss …

The Impact Of Foreign Aid On Voting Inside The United Nations, Daniel Shayne Morey Jan 1998

The Impact Of Foreign Aid On Voting Inside The United Nations, Daniel Shayne Morey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to determine if there is a connection between United States foreign aid donations and a recipient nation's voting patterns in the United Nations General Assembly. Tests in the past have not employed thorough methodologies to deal with the abundance of variables that influence a nation's voting behavior. The methodology created in this research focuses on three important conceptualizations. First, this work creates a new definition of foreign aid; specifically, the inclusion of military aid in a nation's aid package as well as loans and grants, despite their different characteristics. Second, this analysis considers only …

Chain Reaction: The Tragedy Of Atomic Governance, Mary Dawn Wammack Jan 1998

Chain Reaction: The Tragedy Of Atomic Governance, Mary Dawn Wammack

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

An unprecedented combination of imagination and capital resulted in the most profound, and profane, achievement in modern history--the atom bomb--but the strategies that empowered its development caused inestimable suffering in peacetime America. Discrete practices of secrecy, media manipulation, and the devaluation of scientific opinion evolved and coalesced during the cold war, permeating institutions and pre-empting any protection of the unwary from exposure to radioactive fallout. While the atomic testing program and its consequences are often considered in light of national policy, this analysis alternatively reveals the character, fusion, and trajectory of practices that culminated in the collision of the government …

Faculty Publications

During the austral summer of 1993-94 a number of 1-2 m deep snow pits were sampled in connection with firn-coring in western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. The traverse went from 800 to about 3000 m a.s.l. upon the high-altitude plateau. Profiles of cations (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+), anions (Cl−, NO3-, SO4 2- , CH3SO3 −) and stable oxygen isotopes (δ18O) from 11 snow pils are presented here. Close to the coast 2 m of snow accumulates in about 2-3 years, whilst at sites on the high-altitude plateau 2 m of snow accumulates in 10—14 years. The spatial variation in ion …

Indigenous Rights Movements, Land Conflicts, And Cultural Politics In Taiwan: A Case Study Of Li-Shan., Yi-Fong Chen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Land rights claims remain the major focus of world indigenous movements. Lands relate to the formation of indigenous identity, religious practices, and the material base for indigenous cultural survival. From a spatial/geographical perspective, this dissertation explores the influences of Taiwan's state policies on indigenous peoples, their cultures, identities, and human-land relationship. The Li-shan area, in central Taiwan, is the focus of the research due to the fact that the most severe land disputes are in this area, as well as longest history of economic interactions among indigenous peoples, the dominant Han people, and the State, in the postwar Taiwan. The …

Human Dimensions Of Water Resources Policy: The United States Army Corps Of Engineers' Role In Natural Resources And Recreational Management., Herman Roger Hamilton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines policies that affect natural resources and outdoor recreation management by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) at its reservior projects located throughout the United States. The Corps is responsible for a large civil water-resources development and management program in addition to its military responsibilities. The agency has undergone many policy changes which have affected the development of the nation's water resources and the public uses that are made of those developments. Recreation and fish-and-wildlife are by-products of reservoirs which were developed for navigation, flood control, and other conventional purposes. The Corps is the largest supplier of …

Meandering Processes And Channel Morphology In The Lower Mississippi River Prior To Major Human Disturbance., Paul Franklin Hudson Jan 1998

Meandering Processes And Channel Morphology In The Lower Mississippi River Prior To Major Human Disturbance., Paul Franklin Hudson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although the Lower Mississippi River has been intensively studied, few studies have investigated meandering processes in the river when the channel was considered to be relatively free of major human disturbance. This research is significant in that it provides a detailed examination of meandering processes and channel adjustment in a large fine-grained alluvial setting, offering a departure from the base of knowledge on this topic that has evolved from studies on smaller coarse-grained river systems. The study spans the entire length of the Lower Mississippi River (1,704 km), from Cairo, IL to Head of Passes, LA. Two sets of hydrographic …

Wavelet-Based Registration Of Medical Images., Raj Sharman Jan 1998

Wavelet-Based Registration Of Medical Images., Raj Sharman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Registration is the process of spatially aligning two objects and is normally a preprocessing step in most object recognition algorithms. Registration of images and recognition of signatures of objects in images is important for clinical and diagnostic purposes in medicine. Recognizing structure, potential targets for defense purposes and changes in the terrain, from aerial surveillance images and SAR images is the focus of extensive research and development today. Automatic Target Recognition is becoming increasingly important as the defense systems and armament technology move to use smarter munitions. Registration of images is a preprocessing step in any kind of machine vision …

Winter Season Cold Front Variability In The Southern United States., Jeffrey W. Hardy Jan 1998

Winter Season Cold Front Variability In The Southern United States., Jeffrey W. Hardy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The variability of southern United States cold fronts was examined for 29 winter seasons, with particular emphasis placed on the identification of the upper-air circulation patterns associated with months when the region experienced extremes in cold front frequencies and intensities. The influence of atmospheric teleconnection patterns on cold front variability was first examined. For the Pacific/North American (PNA) teleconnection pattern, cold front passage frequencies in Florida were found to be significantly higher (lower) during meridional (zonal) months. An examination of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) revealed that cold front passage frequencies were significantly higher (lower) in western and eastern Texas …

Arthur Miller In Montreal: Cultural Transfer Of American Plays In Quebec (1965-1997)., Bernard Lavoie Jan 1998

Arthur Miller In Montreal: Cultural Transfer Of American Plays In Quebec (1965-1997)., Bernard Lavoie

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the 1960s, American plays presented in Montreal were translated in France; the following decade saw the first of American plays translated or adapted in Quebec. In the 1980s, the translative practices employed in the seventies proved the dominant mode. In the 1990s, only exceptionally has an American play been presented in a translation originating outside of Quebec. It is now the rule that all foreign plays produced in Quebec are translated in the Quebecois idiom. This translative situation has stabilized, and the translation of American plays into Quebecois reflects an established practice. The tracing and analysis of this translative …

A Study Of Integrated Learning Systems In The Public Schools, Mary N. Parker

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of an Integrated Learning System (ILS). This study focused on how public school districts in Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and Iowa were using the ILS. Eighty-five surveys were sent to public school contact persons whose names were provided by Computer Curriculum Corporation (CCC) which produces an ILS called SuccessMaker. Other software providers refused to cooperate in supplying names for the study. The study also asked if the ILS were effective in producing student gains.

While this study did not statistically evaluate the effectiveness of the ILS compared to control groups, or …

Developing A Positive Theory Of Decisionmaking On U.S. Courts Of Appeals, Tracey E. George Jan 1998

Developing A Positive Theory Of Decisionmaking On U.S. Courts Of Appeals, Tracey E. George

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

As the decisions of the United States Courts of Appeals become an increasingly important part of American legal discourse, the debate concerning adjudication theories of the circuit courts gain particular relevance. Whereas, to date, the issue has received mostly normative treatment, this Article proceeds systematically and confronts the positive inquiry: how do courts of appeals judges actually decide cases? The Article proposes theoretically, tests empirically, and considers the implications of, a combined attitudinal and strategic model of en banc court of appeals decision making. The results challenge the classicist judges, legal scholars, and practitioners' normative frameworks, and suggest positive theory's …

Taming The Suburban Amoeba In The Ecosystem Age: Some Do's And Don'ts, J.B. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Urban central cities present a host of environmental problems including, but not limited to, industrial pollution, brownfields, smog, and environmental injustice. Rural and agricultural areas also experience environmental degradations such as pesticide runoff, wetlands conversion, and overgrazing. Between these different bands of lifestyle and land use lie the suburbs, which present their own set of environmental policy issues. This Article focuses on one of those problems: the growth of suburban land area and what it means for emerging notions of ecosystem management and sustainable development at the local land use scale. Part I of the Article provides the demographic and …

Recommendations For An Environmentally Sound Federal Policy On Western Water, Reed D. Benson Jan 1998

Recommendations For An Environmentally Sound Federal Policy On Western Water, Reed D. Benson

Faculty Scholarship

The organizations and individuals who have produced this report have worked for years to promote environmentally sound federal policy and action with respect to water in the American West. The Western Water Policy Review Advisory Commission's (the "Commission") evaluation of these issues presents an excellent opportunity to address long-standing concerns. We believe the Commission can help advance federal policy to promote sustainable use, management and protection of western waters. We begin with a brief look at current water problems in the West from our perspective. We then identify four general priorities for the federal government: taking steps toward restoring more …
