The biblical story of Noah and the ark has been cited by numerous writers as a justification for the protections contained in the Endangered Species Act. In that story, Genesis reports that God instructed Noah to save two of every species from the flood that would destroy life on earth, and that after doing so God established a covenant with Noah and the animals that were saved. The story has inspired writers and activists to posit a duty to imitate Noah today when we struggle to provide the resources and the will to protect all species, however popular or obscure, …

New Orleans' French Quarter: Framing Diverse Visions Of Urban Living, John Foley
New Orleans' French Quarter: Framing Diverse Visions Of Urban Living, John Foley
College of Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA) Working Papers, 1991-2000
This article describes a new course (Environmental Justice Movement) initiated at the College of Urban and Public Affairs at the University of New Orleans in the Spring of 1995. It was designed as a companion to another course, Environmental Planning. The course objectives are to prepare planning students to engage in the environmental policy debate by exposing them to its historical, moral, and technical dimensions, and by examining strategies and tactics of planning practice that would enable them to apply their analytic and research skills to appropriate roles of advocacy and mediation and community planing. It is argued that if …

Evolutionary Change In A Receiver Bias: A Comparison Of Female Preference Functions, Alexandra Basolo
Evolutionary Change In A Receiver Bias: A Comparison Of Female Preference Functions, Alexandra Basolo
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Female poeciliid fishes of the sister genera Xiphophorus and Priapella share a preference for males with swords, despite phylogenetic information suggesting that swords arose in Xiphophorus after the divergence of the two genera. This study examines the strength of sword and body-size preferences in a representative of both genera. A comparison of the preference functions reveals that the strength of the preference favoring a sword in P. olmecae is significantly stronger than that in X. helleri. This result demonstrates that the pre-existing bias is not evolutionarily fixed, and that there has been change in the bias favoring the sword, …
Protection Of Wetlands In The Grand River Watershed From Non-Point Source Pollution (Ontario), Marsha Lynn Paley
Protection Of Wetlands In The Grand River Watershed From Non-Point Source Pollution (Ontario), Marsha Lynn Paley
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The purpose of this study is to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the municipal official plans to protect provincially evaluated wetlands from activities causing non-point source pollution within the Grand River watershed. An integrated framework for policy analysis involving both an evaluative and normative approach assists in determining the value of wetland protection policies and recommends future actions to guide decision-making on development adjacent to wetlands. Specifically, the objectives include (a) to locate, identify and measure the total wetland area, class and number of wetlands in the Grand River watershed on an upper- and lower-tier municipal basis; (b) to …
Issues In Representing Ethnic Residential Segregation, Wanda Teresa Gayle Smith
Issues In Representing Ethnic Residential Segregation, Wanda Teresa Gayle Smith
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This study will look at some of the issues involved in representing ethnic residential segregation. Segregation studies rely heavily upon indices and maps. However, both of these are sensitive to the spatial boundaries used. As well, maps have a visual element which affects the nature and degree of representation. Toronto has been chosen as the area of study because of its high degree of ethnic diversity. Five indices that describe the five dimensions of segregation (Massey and Denton, 1988) will be calculated at four standard levels of aggregation. As well, several types of maps will be produced to illustrate the …
The Educational Impacts Of The Boyne River Natural Science School: Twenty-Five Years Later (Ontario), Roy George Cumming
The Educational Impacts Of The Boyne River Natural Science School: Twenty-Five Years Later (Ontario), Roy George Cumming
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This paper examines how one or more visits to the Boyne River Natural Science School operated by the Toronto Board of Education affects students’ environmental attitudes and behaviours. It also looks at what effect these visits had on their perceptions about the environment and whether the program was important in their personal and educational development. The study surveys students who attended the Boyne River Natural Science School between 1973 and 1986. Effects were measured by means of a short questionnaire. From this time period 125 students filled out the questionnaire, with the gender breakdown being 65 females and 60 males. …
Modelling Spatial Processes: The Identification And Analysis Of Spatial Relationships In Regression Residuals By Means Of Moran's I (Germany), Michael Tiefelsdorf
Modelling Spatial Processes: The Identification And Analysis Of Spatial Relationships In Regression Residuals By Means Of Moran's I (Germany), Michael Tiefelsdorf
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This thesis deals with the implementation, identification and analysis of relationships between geo-referenced objects. Significant spatial relationships manifest themselves in a spatial process which is modelled on a combination of spatial structure and spatial autocorrelation levels. Simple spatial structures reflect plain spill-over effects between adjacent spatial objects, whereas theoretical guided spatial structure mirror functional exchange relationships within the system of spatial objects. In empirical work, the underlying spatial process is unknown. The linking mechanism between a hypothetical spatial structure and a stochastic input must be identified from the observed data. This is accomplished here by means of the test statistic …
Labour Market Marginalisation Of Young Latinos In San Antonio, Texas: A Geographical Perspective Of Neighbourhood Processes, Harald Sven Bauder
Labour Market Marginalisation Of Young Latinos In San Antonio, Texas: A Geographical Perspective Of Neighbourhood Processes, Harald Sven Bauder
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Latinos cluster in the lower segments of the U. S. labour market and therefore suffer disproportionately from labour market marginalisation and poverty. This dissertation examines supply side forces of the ethnic division of labour. Expanding upon structuration theory and realism, the research investigates the role of place in shaping career decisions of Latino youth. A case study of greater San Antonio, Texas, uses quantitative analysis of U. S. Census data to examine the patterns of youth labour market marginalisation in census tracts. In addition, qualitative in-depth interview analysis was conducted with twenty-nine youth and seventeen community-based institutions in two selected …

Communicating Tissue Culture As Art, Ionat Zurr
Communicating Tissue Culture As Art, Ionat Zurr
Theses : Honours
Biologically related technologies are developing rapidly. Their effects will shape the future of human society and the human environment. This paper examines, through the discipline of Photomedia, possible futures dominated by biologically related technologies. More specifically, it explores the relevant issues through the art project called 'Tissue Culture & Art' (therefore refer to as TC&A). TC&A is a research and development project which explores the use of tissue culture and tissue engineering as a medium for artistic expression. Biologically related technologies can be used as a source for questioning the traditional meta-dichotomy of nature versus culture. TC&A redefines the terrain …
Locational Factors Determining The Distribution Of Nesting Sites For A Colony Of Wedge-Tailed Shearwaters, Puffinus Pacificus, On West Wallabi Island, Houtman Abrolhos, Western Australia, Julie Davis
Theses : Honours
West Wallabi Island in the Houtman Abrolhos, Western Australia, provides significant breeding habitat for the largest colony of Wedge-tailed Shearwaters, Puffinus pacificus, in the Eastern Indian Ocean. The Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) surveyed the Island in 1992 and estimated the population to be in excess of 1,117,000 pairs of breeding birds. Recent proposals to open the Abrolhos area to a larger number of visitors has identified the need for more detailed investigations into the relationship of birds and habitat. An understanding of this relationship provides a means of determining the ways in which populations will respond to …
Fear Of Diminishing Fortunes In Middlemarch, Mirella Scarvaci
Fear Of Diminishing Fortunes In Middlemarch, Mirella Scarvaci
Theses : Honours
This thesis offers an interpretation of George Eliot's novel, Middlemarch, which focuses on the historical qualities of Eliot's writing. The thesis invites the need to challenge earlier interpretations of the novel and to develop new theories about the text. The main focus of this research is to show Eliot's presentation of the fear of diminishing fortunes within Middlemarch society. Historical materials are used to verify Eliot's portrayal of the past in Middlemarch. To supplement this, secondary historical sources with a traditional approach will be challenged by recent historical material to ascertain whether Eliot's Middlemarch is a true portrayal of the …
Strategic Planning In The Philippine Advertising Agency Business: A Practice, A Trend, Or A Dream?, Leonardo R. Garcia Jr.
Strategic Planning In The Philippine Advertising Agency Business: A Practice, A Trend, Or A Dream?, Leonardo R. Garcia Jr.
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Effective advertising campaigns are based on a systematic and detailed analysis of product, market, media, and consumer information. Advertisers and their agencies conduct a considerable amount of in-house research, especially personal and focused group interviews, to understand consumers' motivation and decision processes. This philosophy of scanning the environment, conducting research, and obtaining consumer insights in the development of an advertising campaign is essentially known as strategic planning (Gatignon and Burke, 1991).

An Analysis Of The Causes And Consequences Of Urban Sprawl On The Las Vegas Valley, Robert R Schmidt
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Sprawl, as an urban form, has been vociferously attacked by some social scientists as an inefficient and ineffective form urban form which contributes (if not directly causes) to a variety of social ills, it has been embraced by other social scientists as a positive force in today's urban form. This paper examines the two major theoretical approaches to the causes and consequences of sprawl by conducting a case study of the impact of sprawl on the Las Vegas community. validity of the major arguments for and against sprawl will be evaluated in the context of the empirical evidence available today. …
A Study Of The Participation Of Marginally Academic Students In Extracurricular Activities And The Relation To School Persistence, Annette Jean Conners-Harris
A Study Of The Participation Of Marginally Academic Students In Extracurricular Activities And The Relation To School Persistence, Annette Jean Conners-Harris
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore whether participation in extracurricular activities kept marginally academic students in school. This study differed from most dropout studies and extracurricular activities studies in that it focused on the idea that there may be a connection between these two issues and highlighted participation in activities as being critical to students remaining in school. Sub problems such as the number of activities participated in, the average number of hours per week devoted to participation, the type of membership status (leader or member), and the social character of the activity (team effort or an individual …
The Influence Of An Intermediate Intervention Model On Two Teachers' Literacy Practices, Margaret Michelle Smith
The Influence Of An Intermediate Intervention Model On Two Teachers' Literacy Practices, Margaret Michelle Smith
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The focus of this study was to explore the changes in literacy practice that occurred as two intermediate teachers attempted to implement an intervention model within their literacy instruction. There were two participants in this study, Mrs. Bailey, a fourth-grade teacher in her twelfth year of teaching, and Mrs. Cook, a third-grade teacher in her twenty-eighth year of teaching. Multiple data sources including interviews, observations, descriptive self-report items, reflective journal entries, lesson plans, and exit slips and evaluation forms were collected. The constant comparative method (Glaser & Strauss, 1967) was used for analyzing data. This inductive analysis allowed for initial …

Special Education Students: Which Ones Are Prepared To Receive A High School Diploma?, Rhoton Titus Hudson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study sought to determine whether statistically significant differences between students with disabilities who pass and those who fail the Nevada High School Proficiency Examination are accounted for by demographic variables alone, or if they can also be attributed to educational variables. To establish the basis for this study, legislation such as IDEA and Goals 2000 was examined, recent literature was reviewed, and court cases involving testing students with disabilities on standardized and minimum competency tests were studied; The study follows 965 students with disabilities who were in the eleventh grade during the 1998--99 school year through five administrations of …
