Turning To Earth: Paths To An Ecological Practice, Florence Marina Schauffler Jan 1998

Turning To Earth: Paths To An Ecological Practice, Florence Marina Schauffler

Doctoral Dissertations

In highly developed countries like the United States, conventional approaches to environmental change emphasize systemic measures such as policies and regulations. Yet many intractable environmental problems appear to be rooted in the perspectives and practices of individual citizens. Efforts to restore 'outer ecology' may depend, therefore, on transforming 'inner ecology'--the constellation of spiritual and moral values that guide action. This dissertation examines the inner dimensions of ecological change, demonstrating how individuals redefine their relation to earth through a process of 'ecological conversion.'.

In assessing the dynamics of conversion, this work relies primarily on the testimony of six 20th-century American writers: …

G98-1376 Drinking Water: Fluoride (Revised February 2005), Sharon Skipton, Bruce I. Dvorak Jan 1998

G98-1376 Drinking Water: Fluoride (Revised February 2005), Sharon Skipton, Bruce I. Dvorak

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses fluoride in domestic water supplies. Fluoride, a naturally occurring element, exists in combination with other elements as a fluoride compound and is found as a constituent of minerals in rocks and soil. When water passes through and over the soil and rock formations containing fluoride it dissolves these compounds, resulting in the small amounts of soluble fluoride present in virtually all water sources.

Reverting Conservation Reserve Program Lands To Wheat And Livestock Production: Effects On Ground Beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) Assemblages, B. Wade French, Norman C. Elliott, Richard C. Berberet Jan 1998

Reverting Conservation Reserve Program Lands To Wheat And Livestock Production: Effects On Ground Beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) Assemblages, B. Wade French, Norman C. Elliott, Richard C. Berberet

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Highly erodible lands enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program soon will revert to agricultural production. This study was designed to determine the effects of reversion of Conservation Reserve Program lands to wheat and livestock production on ground beetle assemblages. Reversion strategies included no reversion of Conservation Reserve Program grass (unmanaged bluestem), simulated grazing of Conservation Reserve Program grass (managed bluestem), minimum- tillage practices for wheat production, and no-tillage practices for wheat production. A randomized block experimental design was established with 4 replicates. More ground beetles were captured in pitfall traps in 1995 than in 1996, and abundances within years differed …

Status Of Aquatic Vascular Plants 1n Iowa's Natural Lakes, G. S. Phillips Jan 1998

Status Of Aquatic Vascular Plants 1n Iowa's Natural Lakes, G. S. Phillips

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Conversion of wetlands to agricultural land during the settlement of Iowa has resulted in a significant decline in the total area of lake habitat in the state. This reduction in area, combined with the degradation of remaining sites, resulted in dramatic reductions in aquatic vascular plant populations associated with Iowa's natural lakes. While declines in plant species inhabiting fen, bog, seepage, prairie pothole, and marsh type wetlands have been extensively documented, few quantitative data exist for lake type wetlands. During the summer of 1996, a total of 86 natural lakes in Iowa were surveyed for aquatic vascular plants. Many of …

An Analytical Approach To A Tree-Farm Wetland Study., Robert Cunninghame Davidge Jan 1998

An Analytical Approach To A Tree-Farm Wetland Study., Robert Cunninghame Davidge

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Wetland delineation is important because federal and local government regulations limit permissible uses of wetlands. Federal delineation regulations are based upon the use of a manual jointly agreed upon by EPA, USACOE, and NRCS. The manual provides for classification of land as either wetland or non-wetland based upon the 3 criteria of soil, vegetation, and hydrology. No provision is made for gradation between categorical wetland and categorical non-wetland. Controversy has sometimes developed between landowners and environmentalists as to proper wetland classification; some delineations have been considered arbitrary. The analytical method of wetland appraisal provides a means of assigning continuous numerical …

Demons And Angels In Hazardous Waste Regulation: Are Justice, Efficiency, And Democracy Reconcilable?, Michael B. Gerrard Jan 1998

Demons And Angels In Hazardous Waste Regulation: Are Justice, Efficiency, And Democracy Reconcilable?, Michael B. Gerrard

Faculty Scholarship

The Superfund program is perhaps environmental law's best Rorschach test, in which those who write about the national effort to clean up contaminated sites disclose as much about their own philosophies of justice, democracy, and economic efficiency as about environmental legislation. The ten books reviewed here show deep conflicts among these values. I argue, based on these disparate judgments, that many of the Superfund debates have an almost religious character. The law has been shaped to fit the view that demonic polluters were, and remain, at work. The law also reflects a sense of higher duty to future generations – …

Emerging Statutory And Constitutional Tools For States To Resist Federal Environmental Regulation, Michael B. Gerrard Jan 1998

Emerging Statutory And Constitutional Tools For States To Resist Federal Environmental Regulation, Michael B. Gerrard

Faculty Scholarship

This is a time of high tensions between the federal government and the states over environmental regulation. The flashpoints include actions by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) against states that enact laws shielding environmental audit reports from discovery; the withdrawal of several states from certain regulatory reform programs and delegated programs; and EPA accusations that some states are ignoring many violations of the pollution control laws, and loud denials by state representatives.

The Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution and the complex of federal environmental statutes enacted in the 1970s and 1980s still give Washington the upper hand in …

New York State's Brownfields Programs: More And Less Than Meets The Eye, Michael B. Gerrard Jan 1998

New York State's Brownfields Programs: More And Less Than Meets The Eye, Michael B. Gerrard

Faculty Scholarship

New York, as the nation's second most populous state, and one of its oldest and most urban, has an abundance of brownfields-slightly contaminated properties that were formerly used for industrial purposes, but that are now unused or underused, and ripe for redevelopment if they can be cleaned up. Thus, it may be surprising that New York is one of the few states without a comprehensive statute or regulation for the voluntary cleanup of brownfields.

There is, however, more here than meets the eye. New York has three important programs and several smaller ones that provide procedures, money, or incentives for …

Breaking Into The Academy: The 1998-2000 Michigan Journal Of Race & Law Guide For Aspiring Law Professors, Gabriel J. Chin, Denise C. Morgan

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

I was not very far into my law school experience when I realized that my professors had the best job in town-it took me quite a bit longer to discover that I, too, could get in on the deal. Do not misunderstand me-being a law professor is not easy. In fact, when done correctly, the job requires a tremendous amount of intellectual energy, emotional commitment, long hours, and hard work. However, if you enjoy writing, research, public speaking, and developing mentoring relationships, being a law professor could be the career for you. Determination Of Ground-Water Tracer 2,6-Difluorobenzoic Acid By Gc/Ms, Cong Han Jan 1998

Determination Of Ground-Water Tracer 2,6-Difluorobenzoic Acid By Gc/Ms, Cong Han

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this study, a GC analytical method for the determination of the ground water tracer, 2,6-difluorobenzoic acid (2,6-DFBA) at the part per billion level was established. Three sample preparation methods, which include two methylation methods and one silylation method, have been evaluated. Chromatographic instruments including GC/MS, GC/ECD, and GC/FID have been used. Silylation of 2,6-DFBA combined with GC/MS analysis has proven to be the best method in this study, due to the low detection limits (part per trillion) achieved, and the stability of the 2,6-DFBA silyl derivative. A GC/MS instrument calibration curve was established, a C-well water sample was analyzed …

Recreational Disturbance Of A Desert Stream Fish Community: Detecting Ecological Effects Of Environmental Impact, Johnny Mark Sappington Jan 1998

Recreational Disturbance Of A Desert Stream Fish Community: Detecting Ecological Effects Of Environmental Impact, Johnny Mark Sappington

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Fish assemblages in 22 pools were sampled over the summer of 1997 in the North Fork of the Virgin River, Zion National Park, Utah, to assess effects of recreational activities on native fish communities. Pools experiencing high levels of wading and float tubing contained altered population distributions and altered community structure as compared to pools generally lacking recreational activities. In addition, pools disturbed by recreation had lower abundance of desert sucker (Catostomus clarki) and lower community diversity than pools without recreation. Food availability measured as algal biomass and macroinvertebrate drift density was similar among all pools, but abundance of larval …

Waccara's Utes: Native American Equestrian Adaptations In The Eastern Great Basin, 1776-1876, Stephen P Van Hoak

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The equestrian adaptations of the Western Utes of the Eastern Great Basin were distinct from the stereotypical Plains Indian adaptation to the horse. The range and mobility of the Western Utes was enhanced by their acquisition of horses, but the Utes did not abandon their diversified subsistence system to specialize in buffalo hunting as did many Plains equestrian groups. Western Ute equestrian adaptations changed and evolved throughout the nineteenth century in response to environmental, cultural, economic, and political issues. Waccara's Western Utes represented the most conspicuous stage of Native American equestrianism in the Eastern Great Basin, and the success of …
