Disease And Water Supply: The Case Of Cholera In 19th Century Iran, Amir A. Afkhami Jan 1998

Disease And Water Supply: The Case Of Cholera In 19th Century Iran, Amir A. Afkhami

Medicine Faculty Publications

This paper explores why Iran was a particularly fertile ground for repeated visitation of cholera in the 19th century. Along with certain unique Iranian cultural and religious factors, the author demonstrates how Iranian urban ecology, particularly the qanat system, contributed to the fatal spread of the epidemic. These multi-faceted conditions, the author concludes, resulted in distinct modes of disease transmission and mortality in Iran.

New Ideas For Teaching Natural Resources Management: Implications Of, And Response To, The Fedkiw Paper, Hugh Canham, James Coufal Jan 1998

New Ideas For Teaching Natural Resources Management: Implications Of, And Response To, The Fedkiw Paper, Hugh Canham, James Coufal

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

The ideas presented in the paper and emerging book by John Fedkiw have some interesting implications for college-level education. Several questions are raised by his paper and the book. This response, or companion, paper discusses these questions and offers some suggestions for incorporating the ideas into coursework. The questions discussed are as follows: 1. How different are the ideas from those presented in contemporary college-level natural resources teachings? 2. Given that there are some important differences, how can these ideas be incorporated into higher education? Several alternatives appear, namely, as specific courses, as topics in ongoing courses, as examples, or …

Integrated Natural Resource Planning, Dorthy H. Anderson, Dietmar W. Rose, Ken Brooks, Tom Burk, Howard Hoganson, Klaus Puettman Jan 1998

Integrated Natural Resource Planning, Dorthy H. Anderson, Dietmar W. Rose, Ken Brooks, Tom Burk, Howard Hoganson, Klaus Puettman

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Deciding upon management strategies and use of natural resources becomes more challenging as urban areas expand and human population and consumption levels continue to increase. Given that a larger urban population, interestingly, seems to demand both more resources (products) and greater environmental protection, there will no doubt be a coincident heightening of conflicts over natural resource management in the next century. Making decisions on natural resource allocation and use under such circumstances will become even more complex and difficult than they are today. Skilled people will be needed who can develop an integrated approach to natural resource management that sheds …

Interdisciplinary Natural Resource And Environmental Policy Program At Utah State University, Joanna Endter-Wada, Richard S. Krannich

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

The Natural Resource and Environmental Policy Program at Utah State University (USU) is an interdisciplinary, graduate, educational program that has been developed since the fall of 1991. The program administers and awards a graduate certificate, sponsors invited speakers, oversees student policy presentations, and facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration. The program has earned broad, campus-wide support and participation. All eight colleges at USU supported approval of the certificate program in 1994. At present, sixteen academic units are represented on its Faculty Advisory Committee, which oversees and makes decisions about the program. Fifty graduate students from fourteen academic units have pursued the Interdisciplinary Certificate …

Natural Resource Management - The Creation Of A New Interdisciplinary Major At The University Of Delaware, Steven E. Hastings, Karen Roth Aniunas Jan 1998

Natural Resource Management - The Creation Of A New Interdisciplinary Major At The University Of Delaware, Steven E. Hastings, Karen Roth Aniunas

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

The College of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Delaware has an excellent faculty and physical facility well positioned to educate students for managing the world's natural resources (air, land, water, pants, animals, etc.) into the next century. The college offers a variety of traditional, discipline specific undergraduate majors in five academic departments. A faculty committee worked for more than two years to formulate a new major with an interdisciplinary approach. The result is a new major, Natural Resource Management, which began admitting freshman students in the Fall of 1997. This paper will discuss the creation of the Natural Resource …

Teaching Natural Resources 101 As Managing For Social Values And Human-Ecosystem Relationships, James J. Kennedy Jan 1998

Teaching Natural Resources 101 As Managing For Social Values And Human-Ecosystem Relationships, James J. Kennedy

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

From the beginning lecture in their Principles of Natural Resource Management course, College of Natural Resources students at Utah State University (e.g., wildlife/fisheries managers, foresters, geographers, rangeland managers or environmental studies majors) are taught that they will not just manage for ecosystems and not just for people, but for valued relationships between the two (Brunson and Kennedy 1995, Koch and Kennedy 1991). These people-ecosystem relationships generate social values that are communicated to managers by interrelated economic, sociocultural and political/legal systems for society living and (to a lesser extent) for generations of humans and other life-forms yet to be born. How …

The Institution As A Citizen: How Colleges And Universities Enhance Their Civic Roles, Nancy L. Thomas Jan 1998

The Institution As A Citizen: How Colleges And Universities Enhance Their Civic Roles, Nancy L. Thomas

New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications

This paper is premised on the assumption that civic responsibility is the contemporary version of higher education's historical outreach mission. With that as an understanding, it considers how best colleges and universities can fulfill this commitment of service to external communities, broadly defined to include local, national, and international concerns. The paper offers typologies of ways that institutions structure academic outreach, responsive curricula, land-grant and extension school programs, faculty professional service, coordinating student volunteerism and encouraging public access to campus for athletic or cultural events. Institutions interested in enhancing their civic role can take from this paper strategies for enhancing …

A Molecular Evaluation Of Contaminants And Natural Organic Matter In Surface Sediments From Western Lake Ontario, Michael A. Kruge, Prasanta K. Mukhopadhyay, C.F. Michael Lewis Jan 1998

A Molecular Evaluation Of Contaminants And Natural Organic Matter In Surface Sediments From Western Lake Ontario, Michael A. Kruge, Prasanta K. Mukhopadhyay, C.F. Michael Lewis

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) analysis of bottom sediment from Lake Ontario was shown to be effective in assessing organic contaminants, especially attractive as it is a rapid technique requiring little sample preparation. Pyrolyzates of samples richer in organic matter (OM) were relatively enriched in aliphatic hydrocarbons and pyrrolic nitrogen compounds, while leaner samples were more aromatic and pyridinic. Alkylbenzene and alkylphenol distributions in the pyrolyzates were most compatible with derivation from aquatic (algal, bacterial) OM. The organonitrogen compounds indicated the presence of degraded proteinaceous material from aquatic sources and/or sewage. Normal and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon distributions indicate, at least in …

Measuring And Modeling Northeastern Forest Ecosystem Response To Environmental Stresses, Jennifer Caroline Jenkins Jan 1998

Measuring And Modeling Northeastern Forest Ecosystem Response To Environmental Stresses, Jennifer Caroline Jenkins

Doctoral Dissertations

Because forest responses to CO$\sb2$ fertilization and associated climate change are likely to be extremely complex, numerical models representing forest response to an integrated set of future conditions can be useful predictive tools. I compared predictions of forest net primary productivity (NPP) made by two ecosystem process models (PnET-II and TEM 4.0) using different climate scenarios, spatial resolutions, and methods of representing land cover and soils. Decreasing spatial resolution did not appreciably change NPP estimates. Input datasets, particularly climate, land cover, and soil water holding capacity, were important sources of variability in NPP estimates. These datasets interacted with model structures …
