Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

Rectangular, two dimensional sheets of ice molecules are both stressed and compressed. Computer examples compare dynamical responses when the plate has a slot or does not have a slot. The mechanisms for both crack and fracture development are clearly delineated on the molecular level.

Review Of Cather Studies Volume 3. Edited By Susan J. Rosowski, Patrick W. Shaw Jul 1998

Review Of Cather Studies Volume 3. Edited By Susan J. Rosowski, Patrick W. Shaw

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

With some notable exceptions, the fourteen essays in this collection come from critics well-known to the most casual reader of Cather scholarship-John J. Murphy, Merrill Maguire Skaggs, and Marilyn Arnold, for example. Because their views and interdependence are familiar, the reader should be at ease traveling through some of the best traditional criticism of Willa Cather's fiction.

The collection is at its best, however, in essays that deviate from the familiar and traditional. Ann Romines's "Her Mortal Enemy's Daughter: Cather and the Writing of Age" is its finest piece. Immediately following John J. Murphy's "Gilt Diana and Ivory Christ: Love …

Review Of Leaning Into The Wind: Women Write From The Heart Of The West Edited By Edited By Linda Hasselstrom, Gaydell Collier, And Nancy Curtis., Tisha Gilreath-Mullen

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Linda Hasselstrom (rancher and author of Windbreak, Going Over East, Land Circle, and Caught by One Wing), Gaydell Collier (rancher, director of the Crook County Public Library in Wyoming, and co-author of several books on horse training), and Nancy Curtis (rancher and owner-operator of the highly acclaimed High Plains Press) combined talents to edit Leaning into the Wind: Women Write from the Heart of the West. Contributors-of which there are at least two hundred-to this anthology of western women's writings offer a counter-balance to High Plains stereotypes popularized by those historians and writers who erased women's existence from …

Review Of The Culture Of Wilderness: Agriculture As Colonization In The American West By Frieda Knobloch, Emily Greenwald Jul 1998

Review Of The Culture Of Wilderness: Agriculture As Colonization In The American West By Frieda Knobloch, Emily Greenwald

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In this intriguing synthesis, Frieda Knobloch brings a new set of ideas to existing scholarship on agriculture and the environmental history of the American West. She traces the process of "nature becoming culture," the ways in which naturally existing resources (land, animals, plants, and trees) were transformed into agriculturally-managed commodities, thereby serving the twin imperatives of colonization and agriculture. Knobloch argues that colonization and agriculture not only sprang from the same roots in the English language, but have also operated hand-in-hand to dispossess indigenous plants, animals, and peoples. In Knobloch's formulation, neither can exist apart from the other-essentially, agriculture is …

Reproducing A Fit Citizenry: Dependency, Eugenics, And The Law Of Marriage In The United States, Matthew Lindsay Jul 1998

Reproducing A Fit Citizenry: Dependency, Eugenics, And The Law Of Marriage In The United States, Matthew Lindsay

All Faculty Scholarship

Between the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era, American state legislatures enacted a series of new laws that delineated a class of citizens who were deemed ineligible to participate in the institution of marriage. Scholars have characterized this development as evidence that lawmakers had lost faith in a laissez-faire approach to nuptial governance, and thus transformed marriage into an object of public regulation. This essay argues that behind the ostensible nuptial privatism of the mid-nineteenth century lay a self-conscious policy. of judicial governance. Judges invoked the language of nuptial privacy and the common law of contract strategically to advance their …

Effects Of Library Instruction On University Students' Satisfaction With The Library: A Longitudinal Study, Anthony Stamatoplos, Robert Mackoy Jul 1998

Effects Of Library Instruction On University Students' Satisfaction With The Library: A Longitudinal Study, Anthony Stamatoplos, Robert Mackoy

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

Consideration of satisfaction should be an important part of the evaluation of library services. Satisfaction depends, to some extent, on patron expectations of services. This study evaluated changes in student expectations following library instruction and how they were related to overall, long-term satisfaction with the library. Satisfaction appeared to be related to student perceptions of information accessibility, staff competence and helpfulness, computer usefulness and ease of use, and skill level for using libraries. The study suggests that libraries may be well served by measuring patron satisfaction and learning what variables drive satisfaction at particular libraries.

Public Transit, Public Trust : A Performance Review Of The Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Texas Performance Review (Agency), Texas Comptroller's Office

Documents from the State of Texas-Archive

The authority's wealth, however, has seemed to engender a dangerous laxity in the fiscal policies of past board members and managers, and a tendency ignore the needs and expectations of its customers and owners -the taxpayers. This lack of cost-consciorisness has resulted in expensive consulting studies that sit on shelves, ignored and unused; failed projects that produce little for the- authority or its customers; and a general absence of budgetary restraint and common-sense accountabiiity. This-laxity has been encouraged, as documented in dozens of past studies and news articles, by the fact that Capital Metro has never enjoyed stable leadership. Its legacy, …

Emerging Technology Companies In India: Equity Compensation As A Strategy, Simon G Zinger Jul 1998

Emerging Technology Companies In India: Equity Compensation As A Strategy, Simon G Zinger

IIMB Management Review

Liberalisation has seen many economies, especially in Asia, opening their hitherto sheltered domestic markets to global competition and providing greater opportunities to trade and foreign investment. The spinoffs of liberalisation bring in new implications, opportunities and challenges for the governments as well as the organisations involved. Round Table features some of the issues discussed in the conference on 'Managing Economic Liberalisation in South Asia : Directions for the 21st Century' held in Chennai, India, from August 10 -13. Selvarajah examines the realignment of economies towards globalisation as a development of regionalism. The shift in economic forces away from multilateral arrangements …

Fuzzy Logic Applied To System Control To Enhance Commercial Appliance Performance, Glenn Moffett Jul 1998

Fuzzy Logic Applied To System Control To Enhance Commercial Appliance Performance, Glenn Moffett

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to determine the usefulness of fuzzy logic and fuzzy control when applied to a commercial appliance. Fuzzy logic is a structured, model-free estimator that approximates a function through linguistic input/output associations. Fuzzy rule-based systems apply these methods to solve many types of "real-world" problems, especially where a system is difficult to model, is controlled by a human operator or expert, or where ambiguity or vagueness is common.

This dissertation presents fuzzy sets, fuzzy systems, and fuzzy control, with an example conveying the use of fuzzy control of a consumer product and an overview of …

Bennet V. Spear: Lions, Tigers And Bears Beware; The Decline Of Environmental Protection, Preeti S. Chaudhari Jul 1998

Bennet V. Spear: Lions, Tigers And Bears Beware; The Decline Of Environmental Protection, Preeti S. Chaudhari

Northern Illinois University Law Review

The conservationist purpose of several environmental statutes is eroding. This casenote examines the Supreme Court's decision in Bennett v. Spear, in which the Court expanded standing by holding that even commercial entities may sue under the Endangered Species Act's citizen suit provision. The Note traces the progression and development of standing, both generally and with respect to federal environmental statutes. It then analyzes the Bennett v. Spear decision, focusing on the Supreme Court's shift away from environmental interests and toward those of commerce. Finally, the author offers three strategies to restore the environmental protectionist purpose of the Endangered Species Act.
