Working Through The Maze Of Liability Shields, Jeff King, Ryan Scmiesing
Working Through The Maze Of Liability Shields, Jeff King, Ryan Scmiesing
Journal of Extension
Liability shields are often utilized as a strategy for managing risk associated with youth programming efforts; but, at the same time, the shields are often misused and misunderstood. When properly developed and utilized, liability shields can be worth more than the paper they are written on. This article describes various liability shields that can be incorporated into an Extension risk management program. They include: permission slips, informed consent forms, waivers and releases, and indemnification agreements. In addition, five specific implications are stated for Extension professionals.
Architectural Optimization Of Digital Libraries, Aileen O. Biser
Architectural Optimization Of Digital Libraries, Aileen O. Biser
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
This work investigates performance and scaling issues relevant to large scale distributed digital libraries. Presently, performance and scaling studies focus on specific implementations of production or prototype digital libraries. Although useful information is gained to aid these designers and other researchers with insights to performance and scaling issues, the broader issues relevant to very large scale distributed libraries are not addressed. Specifically, no current studies look at the extreme or worst case possibilities in digital library implementations. A survey of digital library research issues is presented. Scaling and performance issues are mentioned frequently in the digital library literature but are …

Self-Calibrating Method For Measuring Local Multiphotonionization Yields As A Function Of Absolute Intensity, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal, B. Witzel, H. Schröder, K.-L. Kompa
Self-Calibrating Method For Measuring Local Multiphotonionization Yields As A Function Of Absolute Intensity, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal, B. Witzel, H. Schröder, K.-L. Kompa
C.J.G.J. Uiterwaal Publications
We present a self-calibrating method for measuring local multiphoton-ionization yields as a function of absolute intensity. In contrast to the method recently described by Walker et al. [Phys. Rev. A 57, R701 (1998)], our method does not require any assumption on the intensity distribution inside a laser focus, nor does it use any mathematical procedure such as deconvolution that would be based on such an assumption. In this sense, our method is self-calibrating. The proposed method immediately gives ion yields as a function of absolute intensity. Furthermore, it allows the intensity distribution inside the focal volume to be measured with …
A Shared Memory Multiprocessor System Architecture Utilizing A Uniform, Frank Casilio
A Shared Memory Multiprocessor System Architecture Utilizing A Uniform, Frank Casilio
Theses
Due to VLSI lithography problems and the limitation of additional architectural enhancements uniprocessor systems are nearing the end of their life cycle. Therefore, it is believed that Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) systems will be the next mainstream computer. These systems allow multiple processors, accessing the same memory image, to cooperate on a number of computational tasks as a single entity. While multiprocessor systems can offer a substantial performance increase compared to uniprocessor systems, major design considerations must be addressed to achieve desired system efficiency levels. Managing cache coherence is a significant problem in multiprocessor systems. Current implementations cope with this problem …
Patellofemoral Joint Compressive Forces During Backward And Forward Running At The Same Speed, Hesham N. Alrowayeh
Patellofemoral Joint Compressive Forces During Backward And Forward Running At The Same Speed, Hesham N. Alrowayeh
Rehabilitation Sciences Theses & Dissertations
A previous study found that the patellofemoral joint compressive force (PFJRF) during backward running was less than during forward running at free speed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the patellofemoral joint compressive forces during backward and forward running at the same speed. Ten runners (4 females, 6 males) between the age of 20-25 (X=22, SD=2) ran in backward and forward directions at the slow speed of 2.3 mph (1.0 m.sec-1). Using the inverse dynamic technique the knee extensor moment and PFJRF during the slow backward and forward running were calculated. Results showed that the …
Search For Sleptons In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Up To 184 Gev Aleph Collaboration, R. Barate, Manoj Thulasidas
Search For Sleptons In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Up To 184 Gev Aleph Collaboration, R. Barate, Manoj Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The data collected by the ALEPH experiment at LEP at centre–of–mass energies around 183 GeV are analysed to search for sleptons, the partners of leptons in supersymmetric theories. The previously published search for acoplanar leptons and missing energy has been updated. New searches have been developed to cover a wider range of slepton signals. These include single electrons, acoplanar leptons accompanied by two photons plus missing energy as well as particles with lifetime. No evidence for the production of any such particles is found. Slepton mass limits are reported within gravity mediated and gauge mediated SUSY breaking scenarios.

Scalar Quark Searches In E+E- Collisions At √S = 181 - 184 Gev, Barate, R.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Searches for scalar top, scalar bottom and degenerate scalar quarks have been performed with data collected with the ALEPH detector at LEP. The data sample consists of 57 pb−1 taken at s = 181–184 GeV. No evidence for scalar top, scalar bottom or degenerate scalar quarks was found in the channels t̃→cχ, t̃→bℓν̃, b̃→bχ, and q̃→qχ. From the channel t̃→cχ a limit of 74 GeV/c2has been set on the scalar top quark mass, independent of the mixing angle. This limit assumes a mass difference between the t̃ and the χ in the range 10–40 GeV/c2. From the channel t̃→bℓν̃ the …

Spatial Analysis Of Agricultural Cucurbita Sp. Varieties In The Eastern Broadleaf Province, Kathleen M. Baker
Masters Theses
The purpose of this research was to explain and quantify twentieth century agricultural distributions of the genus Cucurbita in the United States to determine the effect of temporal changes in economic utilization and a variety of historical, environmental and social circumstances on those distributions. Geographic information system (GIS) methods were combined with statistical software techniques to analyze the spatial and temporal trends of pumpkin and squash growth in one region (the Eastern Broadleaf Province, as defined by Bailey) of the United States from 1982-1992.
Counties with fewer frost free days, later spring frosts, more accumulated growing degree units throughout the …
Delectatio Et Utilitas In Hrotsvit Of Gandersheim's Resuscitatio Drusianae Et Calimachi, Mary Maxine Browne
Delectatio Et Utilitas In Hrotsvit Of Gandersheim's Resuscitatio Drusianae Et Calimachi, Mary Maxine Browne
Masters Theses
Hrotsvit of Gandersheim (935-1002 A.D.) wrote her play, Resuscitatio Drusianae et Calimachi, as the other five plays which Hrotsvit composed, as an adaptation of a hagiography from the apocryphal Acta Johannis. Written in the spirit of the tenth-century didactic esthetic delectatio et utilitas, Hrotsvit adapted the narrative of the legend to the Terentian comedic form, that she might instruct her monastic audience according to the delectatio et utilitas esthetic.
This discussion focuses on the sources and backgrounds of Hrotsvit's play, followed by Hrotsvit' s adaptive treatment of the characters in Resuscitatio Drusianae et Calimachi with a …
Reflection Moderation In The U.S. Senate On Economics, Social, And Foreign Policy, Brian E. Russell
Reflection Moderation In The U.S. Senate On Economics, Social, And Foreign Policy, Brian E. Russell
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates reelection moderation in the U.S. Senate on economic, social, and foreign policy between 1983 and 1994. I test 3 hypotheses based on the assumption that senators moderate their voting records when seeking reelection to appeal to the median voter. My hypotheses are: (1) Both groups of senators will moderate on economic policy, but a larger percentage of Democrats will moderate than Republicans (2) A majority of Democratic senators will moderate on social policy, but only a small percentage of Republicans will moderate. (3) Less than a majority of both groups of senators will moderate on foreign policy, …
The Forward-Backward Asymmetry For Charm Quarks At The Z, R. Barate, Manoj Thulasidas
The Forward-Backward Asymmetry For Charm Quarks At The Z, R. Barate, Manoj Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
From 1.4 million hadronic Z decays collected by the ALEPH detector at LEP, an enriched sample of Z → cc̄ events is extracted by requiring the presence of a high momentum D∗±. The charm quark forward-backward charge asymmetry at the Z pole is measured to be AFB0.c = (8.0 ± 2.4) % corresponding to an effective electroweak mixing angle of sin2θWeff = 0.2302 ± 0.0054.
Defining Scholarship For County Extension Agents, Ann Schauber, Susan Aldrich-Markham, Jeff Olsen, Gail Gredler
Defining Scholarship For County Extension Agents, Ann Schauber, Susan Aldrich-Markham, Jeff Olsen, Gail Gredler
Journal of Extension
With the privilege of academic rank, Oregon county Extension faculty have a responsibility to do scholarly work. In an effort to understand the meaning of scholarship as it relates to county Extension work, six agents met for a day to examine what scholarship meant to each of them. While scholarship has been traditionally defined as research, they explored how their primary job, teaching, could also be viewed as scholarship when it develops new methods or integrates new knowledge leading to new understanding. They recognized that Extension faculty's challenge is to demonstrate the value of these other forms of scholarship to …

Nocturnal Enuresis In Children, N S. Ali
Nocturnal Enuresis In Children, N S. Ali
Community Health Sciences
This common condition can be managed by the general practitioners. The key answer to nocturnal enuresis is nocturnal self-awakening and recently more emphasis is given on this which is an area of greatest promise. Behavioural modification in conjunction with an enuretic alarm also teaches this skill and has the highest cure rate and the lowest relapse rate. Enuretic alarms can be used any time from age 5 onwards. But drugs are only indicated when there is need for short term dryness e.g. when the child has to be away from home.
Water Flow Through Temperate Glaciers, Andrew G. Fountain, Joseph S. Walder
Water Flow Through Temperate Glaciers, Andrew G. Fountain, Joseph S. Walder
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Understanding water movement through a glacier is fundamental to several critical issues in glaciology, including glacier dynamics, glacier-induced floods, and the prediction of runoff from glacierized drainage basins. To this end we have synthesized a conceptual model of water movement through a temperate glacier from the surface to the outlet stream. Processes that regulate the rate and distribution of water input at the glacier surface and that regulate water movement from the surface to the bed play important but commonly neglected roles in glacier hydrology. Where a glacier is covered by a layer of porous, permeable firn (the accumulation zone), …

Radiocarbon From Nuclear Testing Applied To Age Validation Of Black Drum, Pogonias Cromis, Steven E. Campana, Cynthia M. Jones
OES Faculty Publications
Radiocarbon ((14)C) in the world's oceans increased sharply between 1950 and 1970 as a result of the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons. Through comparison with the (14)C time series reconstructed from atmospheric measurements and marine carbonates, Kalish, in 1993, used the (14)C concentration measured in fish otolith cores as a means of confirming the annulus-based age estimates for some South Pacific fish species. Here we report the pre-and postbomb (14)C chronology of North Atlantic adult black drum (Pogonias cronis), assumed to be between 15 and 42 yr of age on the basis of otolith annulus counts. According to …
