The Three-Species Monomer-Monomer Model In The Reaction-Controlled Limit, Kevin E. Bassler, Dana A. Browne Jul 1998

The Three-Species Monomer-Monomer Model In The Reaction-Controlled Limit, Kevin E. Bassler, Dana A. Browne

Faculty Publications

We study the one-dimensional three-species monomer-monomer reaction model in the reaction-controlled limit using mean-field theory and dynamic Monte Carlo simulations. The phase diagram consists of a reactive steady state bordered by three equivalent adsorbing phases where the surface is saturated with one monomer species. The transitions from the reactive phase are all continuous, while the transitions between adsorbing phases are first order. Bicritical points occur where the reactive phase simultaneously meets two adsorbing phases. The transitions from the reactive to an adsorbing phase show directed percolation critical behaviour, while the universal behaviour at the bicritical points is in the even …

Venture Capital Contracting In The Information Age, D. Gordon Smith Jul 1998

Venture Capital Contracting In The Information Age, D. Gordon Smith

Faculty Scholarship

Most venture capitalists provide services to their portfolio companies beyond capital investment. Although these services form an important part of the bargain between the venture capitalists and the entrepreneur, they are rarely specified or even capable of specification in venture capital contracts. This article examines the moral hazard and adverse selection problems facing entrepreneurs who hire venture capitalists to provide value-added services and describes the role of the market for venture capitalist reputation in addressing those problems. Further, the Article speculates about whether advances in information technology - specifically, the World Wide Web - are likely to improve the efficiency …

An Exploration Of The Roles, Responsibilities, And Challenges Of Six Graduate Teaching Assistants In The Visual Arts, Karen Drummond Devers Jul 1998

An Exploration Of The Roles, Responsibilities, And Challenges Of Six Graduate Teaching Assistants In The Visual Arts, Karen Drummond Devers

Theses and Dissertations

In this qualitative study, six participants shared their experiences as graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) in the Visual Arts department of an upper- midwest university. Interviews, observations, and field notes during one semester, provided insights into how the participants described and understood their roles and < )sponsibilities as teachers. The university in this study offered no formal training and limited support to the graduate teaching assistants. As a result, participants had to depend on their own ingenuity and judgement to determine what and how to teach. The GTAs had full responsibility for crafting their course syllabi, creating and grading assignments, and resolving difficulties which arose in their classrooms. If they wanted feedback or suggestions, it was up to them to seek out responsive faculty members as mentors. The issues of student absenteeism and non-compliant behaviors were particularly difficult for the participants to resolve. The lack of preparation and support which was offered the GTAs contributed to their sense of isolation and precluded the formation of a teaching and learning community within the department.

Cold Relativistic Wavebreaking, J.K. Kim, Donald P. Umstadter Jul 1998

Cold Relativistic Wavebreaking, J.K. Kim, Donald P. Umstadter

Donald Umstadter Publications

The two-dimensional wave-breaking of relativistic plasma waves driven by a ultrashort high-power lasers, is described within a framework of cold 2-D fluid theory. It is shown that the transverse nonlinearity of the plasma wave results in temporally increasing transverse plasma oscillation in the wake of the laser pulse, inevitably inducing wave-breaking below the 1-D threshold. A condition for wavebreaking is obtained and evaluated. A preformed density channel is found to partially cancel the effect and increase the length of wakefield that survives before wavebreaking occurs.

The report recorded that the victim "accidentally detonated an anti-tank mine while preparing for the testing of the newly purchased Hydrema mine clearance machines". The victim was "deploying and arming" mines in a marked test ground and wore a "ballistic jacket and visor". He worked alone arming the mines at a distance of 300 metres from the nearest person (a medic). It is not recorded whether this mine was the first to be armed. He stood and looked down at the mine for 20 seconds, then knelt beside it for a second time. 25-30 seconds later the mine detonated. "It …

Everett Marshall, Oral History Interview, 1998, Laurence Smith

Oral Histories

Everett Marshall taught in the Education and Psychology Departments at Eastern Michigan University from 1938-1949. From 1949-1979, Marshall served as Dean of Academic Records and Teacher Certification. In this interview, Marshall details his relationships with, and characteristics of, several EMU presidents and faculty members. Marshall also describes his methods of raising enrollment from 1,850 at the beginning of his tenure to over 19,000 at the time of his retirement. This interview was conducted for the purpose of gathering primary research for Laurence Smith’s book, Eastern Michigan University: A Sesquicentennial Portrait (1999).

He put on his helmet and started to prod in a squatting position. He detonated the mine with his bayonet at 09:15 (started work at 06:00).

Octary Codewords With Power Envelopes Of 3∗2M, Katherine M. Nieswand, Kara N. Wagner Jul 1998

Octary Codewords With Power Envelopes Of 3∗2M, Katherine M. Nieswand, Kara N. Wagner

Department of Math & Statistics Technical Report Series

This paper examines codewords of length 2m in Z8 with envelope power maxima of 3 ∗ 2m. Using the general form for Golay pairs as a base, a general form is derived for the set of coset leaders that generate these codewords. From this general form it will be proven that there exists at least one element in the coset that achieves a power of 3 ∗ 2m for each m-even and m-odd case.

Discovering Methodologies For Integrated Product Design, Cirrus Shakeri, David C. Brown, Mohammad N. Noori Jul 1998

Discovering Methodologies For Integrated Product Design, Cirrus Shakeri, David C. Brown, Mohammad N. Noori

Office of the Dean (CENG) Scholarship

The current methodologies for multi-disciplinary product design are based on compromising between different disciplines rather than integrating them. These methodologies do not use a systematic and holistic approach to the problem of multi-disciplinary design and thus are piecemeal rather than comprehensive. This paper presents a new approach to producing design methodologies for integration of the different disciplines in the design process. A multi-agent system has been developed that designs a 2-DOF robot arm by incorporating five proposed strategies for integration between disciplines. Design methodologies are extracted by tracking the system and generalizing the traces that are produced. The results show …
