The Young Women's Leadership School: A Viable Alternative To Traditional Coeducational Public Schools, Erin A. Mcgrath

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that single-sex education is a beneficial and constitutional alternative to traditional coeducational programs, using the Young Women's Leadership School as a prime example. It contends that such schools address past discrimination and provide tailored educational environments that enhance academic performance and self-esteem, particularly for underprivileged girls. The analysis emphasizes that single-sex education can meet legal standards under Title IX and Equal Protection scrutiny, as demonstrated by the Leadership School's compliance with regulatory requirements and its focus on remedying historical inequities.

Theoretical Analysis Of Metal Hydride Electrodes: Studies On Equilibrium Potential And Exchange Current Density, Bala S. Haran, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White Jan 1998

Theoretical Analysis Of Metal Hydride Electrodes: Studies On Equilibrium Potential And Exchange Current Density, Bala S. Haran, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A theoretical model for the metal hydride electrode has been developed assuming that hydrogen diffusion in the alloy and charge-transfer at the surface control the discharge process. Theoretical equations for the dependence of equilibrium potential and exchange current density on the surface hydrogen concentration have been derived. These parameters have been used to correlate experimental data with the theoretical electrode discharge model. Analysis of both the experimental and theoretical discharge curves reveals a potential plateau determined by the magnitude of the interactions between the hydrogen in the alloy and the unhydrided metal. Neglecting these hydrogen-metal site interactions results in simulations …

I'Ll Take It For What It Is Worth -- The Use Of Hearsay Evidence By Labor Arbitrators: A Primer And Modest Proposal, Marvin F. Hill, Jr., Tammy M. Westhoff, Jan 1998

I'Ll Take It For What It Is Worth -- The Use Of Hearsay Evidence By Labor Arbitrators: A Primer And Modest Proposal, Marvin F. Hill, Jr., Tammy M. Westhoff,

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This article considers these and other selected problems dealing with hearsay evidence that are likely to be encountered in the arbitral forum. It is our thesis that arbitrators do and should credit some (but not all) forms of hearsay evidence, but that the arbitral process is not served by admitting all evidence and "taking it for what it is worth." Further, we believe when an advocate's case against a grievant consists entirely of hearsay evidence, and there is no reliable substitute for cross examination or "equivalent circumstantial guarantees of trustworthiness," the grievant should prevail. Only in the rarest of cases …

Faa Exclusionary Clause: Are We Headed For A Broader Interpretation Of Interstate Commerce - Miller V. Public Storage Management, Inc., The, Matthew Potter

Journal of Dispute Resolution

The Federal Arbitration Act ("FAA") encompasses a vast spectrum of arbitration controversies. The FAA provides that "[a] written provision in .. . a contract evidencing a transaction involving commerce to settle by arbitration a controversy thereafter arising out of such contract or transaction... shall be valid, irrevocable, and enforceable."2 The preceding section of the Act, however, states that "nothing herein contained shall apply to contracts of employment of seamen, railroad employees, or any other class of workers engaged in foreign or interstate commerce."3 In their efforts to maintain a balance between these competing interests, many courts have attempted to assemble …

From Paparazzi To Hidden Cameras: The Aggressive Side Of A Free And Responsible Press, Rodney A. Smolla Jan 1998

From Paparazzi To Hidden Cameras: The Aggressive Side Of A Free And Responsible Press, Rodney A. Smolla

Law Faculty Publications

This article examines the complex of cultural effects and possible legal responses in the wake of the Princess of Wales' death. To say that the paparazzi were complicit in her death is to forget that, in spite of their frequently invasive means of obtaining news, these were also the kind of journalists who were complicit in the public celebration of her life. Had the Hutchins Commission this tragedy to include in its deliberations about press responsibility, it likely would have stated its indignation and suggested Diana's death as more evidence that journalists be regulated. But this article argues that aggressive …

The Effect Of Particle Size On The Discharge Performance Of A Nickel-Metal Hydride Cell, Jussi M. Heikonen, Harry J. Ploehn, Ralph E. White Jan 1998

The Effect Of Particle Size On The Discharge Performance Of A Nickel-Metal Hydride Cell, Jussi M. Heikonen, Harry J. Ploehn, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

We investigate the effect of particle size on the discharge performance of a nickel-metal hydride cell with a mathematical model. Electrodes with uniform as well as with nonuniform particle sizes are studied. With uniform particle size, the dependence of the particle-to-particle resistance on the particle size is taken into account. The optimal particle size depends on the discharge rate. Moreover, we show that under certain conditions it is advantageous to use a nonuniform particle size. In general, the higher the discharge current density, the more the particle size affects the electrode performance.

Π-Systems As Lithium/Hydrogen Bond Acceptors: Some Theoretical Observations, Salai Cheettu Ammal, P. Venuvanalingam

Faculty Publications

Ab initio calculations at the Hartree–Fock and correlated levels and density functional theory calculations have been performed with 6-31++G(d,p) and 6-311++G(d,p)basis sets on LiF and HF complexes of benzene, ethylene, and acetylene. Complex binding energies have been corrected for basis set superposition error, and zero point energy corrections have been done on Hartree–Fock binding energies. Computed results indicate that the complexes exist in different conformations and among them those with π-lithium and π-hydrogen bonds are the most stable. π-lithium bonds are stronger than π-hydrogen bonds. The computed binding energies and geometry of HF complexes correlate well with the available experimental …

Ab Initio And Dft Investigations Of Lithium/Hydrogen Bonded Complexes Of Trimethylamine, Dimethyl Ether And Dimethyl Sulfide, Salai Cheettu Ammal, P. Venuvanalingam

Faculty Publications

Ab initio and DFT computations have been carried out on LiF and HF complexes of a set of n-donors viz. trimethylamine, dimethyl ether and dimethyl sulfide with a 6-31++G(d,p) basis set. The effect of correlation has been included with MP2, MP4 and DFT calculations. NBO analyses of the wavefunctions have been performed to examine the intermolecular interaction at the orbital level. Calculations reveal that these donors form strong n→σ* complexes and computed binding energies of the (CH3)2O···HF complex agree very well with the experimental binding energies from IR spectroscopy. LiF forms stronger complexes than HF, …

Atrazine, Deethylatrazine, And Deisopropylatrazine Persistence Measured In Groundwater In Situ Under Low-Oxygen Conditions, Sharon Papiernik, Roy Spalding Jan 1998

Atrazine, Deethylatrazine, And Deisopropylatrazine Persistence Measured In Groundwater In Situ Under Low-Oxygen Conditions, Sharon Papiernik, Roy Spalding

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The degradation of atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-isopropylamino-1,3,5-triazine], deethylatrazine [DEA; 2-amino-4-chloro-6-(isopropylamino)-1,3,5-triazine], and deisopropylatrazine [DIA; 2-amino-4-chloro-6-(ethylamino)-1,3,5-triazine] was assessed under limited oxygen conditions using in situ microcosms. Denitrification was induced in a shallow sand and gravel aquifer to measure the potential for degradation of atrazine, DEA, and DIA under low-O2 conditions. The dissolved oxygen content decreased from 7-8 mg/L to ≤1 mg/L within 4 days and remained ≤ mg/L for the remainder of the 45-day experiment. Atrazine, DEA, and DIA concentrations (normalized to the bromide concentration at each sampling time to account for dilution) did not show a significant decrease with time, indicating that these …

Legal Reform: Reviewing Human Rights In The Muslim World, Azizah Y. Al-Hibri Jan 1998

Legal Reform: Reviewing Human Rights In The Muslim World, Azizah Y. Al-Hibri

Law Faculty Publications

Muslims take spirituality very seriously and would be willing to put up with a great deal of pain and suffering rather than abandon this fundamental disposition. Additionally, many Muslims have an intuitive belief that it is not religion which is at fault, but those in power. Consequently, they continue to search for the spiritually acceptable solution. In the meantime, Western NGOs offer no more than lightly-modified Western secular solutions, sometimes thinly disguised with religious rhetoric.

Opto-Electronic Sensor System For Rapid Evaluation Of Planter Seed Spacing Uniformity, Michael F. Kocher, Yubin Lan, Changhe Chen, John A. Smith Jan 1998

Opto-Electronic Sensor System For Rapid Evaluation Of Planter Seed Spacing Uniformity, Michael F. Kocher, Yubin Lan, Changhe Chen, John A. Smith

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

An opto-electronic seed spacing evaluation system that measured time intervals between seeds and detected front-to-back location of seed drop events relative to the planter was used to rapidly determine planter seed spacing uniformity in the laboratory. The seed detection sensor for the opto-electronic system consisted of a rectangular photogate with 24 phototransistors receiving light beams from 24 LEDs opposite to them. The system also included circuitry to interface the photogate with a digital I/O board in a personal computer. The opto-electronic system was tested with three planter configurations. During the tests, the photogate was positioned beneath the seed drop tube …

Communicating Tissue Culture As Art, Ionat Zurr Jan 1998

Communicating Tissue Culture As Art, Ionat Zurr

Theses : Honours

Biologically related technologies are developing rapidly. Their effects will shape the future of human society and the human environment. This paper examines, through the discipline of Photomedia, possible futures dominated by biologically related technologies. More specifically, it explores the relevant issues through the art project called 'Tissue Culture & Art' (therefore refer to as TC&A). TC&A is a research and development project which explores the use of tissue culture and tissue engineering as a medium for artistic expression. Biologically related technologies can be used as a source for questioning the traditional meta-dichotomy of nature versus culture. TC&A redefines the terrain …

Young Children's Understanding Of Design In The Technology Process, Jean E. O'Sullivan Jan 1998

Young Children's Understanding Of Design In The Technology Process, Jean E. O'Sullivan

Theses : Honours

This study explored the development of children's thinking when social constructivist principles of learning were implemented through technological experiences. The study monitored the development of children's understanding of “design" through project work, using classroom based action research. In addition to investigating children's understandings, the study explored the use of technology in early childhood curriculum to develop the skills said to be required in the next millennium. The study found that five year old children are capable of "designing" and that technology is an effective vehicle for developing socially, contextually and culturally appropriate learning experiences.

The Effect Of Training Mode On Skill Acquisition And Transfer, Douglas F. Brewer Jan 1998

The Effect Of Training Mode On Skill Acquisition And Transfer, Douglas F. Brewer

Theses : Honours

This study examined the transfer of skills developed in solving a simple algebraic formula. Forty-two university Psychology undergraduates, randomly assigned to one of two training groups. were required to practice solving the formula (X2-Y)/2 by substituting numbers for the variables x and y. One group of participants practiced with eight sets of numbers, while the other group practiced with 16 sets of numbers. All participants performed 320 trials during training. In the transfer phase, the response times required to solve the same formula with a set of numbers not previously encountered was analysed to determine if the variation …

Juries Under Siege., Phil Hardberger Jan 1998

Juries Under Siege., Phil Hardberger

St. Mary's Law Journal

Beginning in the late 1980s, the Texas Supreme Court saw a slew of conservative judges elected to the bench. With this new Court, previous expansions of the law were stopped. Jury verdicts became highly suspect and were frequently overturned for a variety of reasons. Damages too did not go unnoticed. Juries’ assessments were wiped out by increasingly harsher standards. The ripple effect of the Court’s conservative philosophy on the judicial process was substantial. Jury verdicts, few as they may be, are not subject to harsh scrutiny by conscientious appellate judges sworn to follow the Texas Supreme Court’s precedent. And the …

Estimation Of An Aggregate Demand For Money Function In The European Economic And Monetary Union (Emu)*, Victor Pontines Jan 1998

Estimation Of An Aggregate Demand For Money Function In The European Economic And Monetary Union (Emu)*, Victor Pontines

DLSU Business & Economics Review

In May 1998, the 11 countries to comprise the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) were finally selected. The selection put an end to doubts that the EMU will come into existence at the end of this century. With the Union in place, fixed exchange rates or a common currency would have to be adopted, necessitating a common monetary policy. Concomitantly, the European System of Central Banks (ESCB), headed by the European Central Bank (ECB), would have to choose an appropriate monetary strategy to fulfill its objectives as laid down in Article 1 05 of the Treaty of the European …

Effects Of Supervisory Control On Salesperson Behavior, Rustica D. Badillo Jan 1998

Effects Of Supervisory Control On Salesperson Behavior, Rustica D. Badillo

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The supervisor is a key person in any organization because his job embraces the difficulties of management in controlling the organization. His primary responsibility is the accomplishment of the organization's goals and objectives — getting things done — with and through people. Over the years, his work has undergone changes and is still undergoing developments, depending upon the demands of the times. In its desire for continuous improvement, management searches for new and better ways of running the organization. Every change initiated by management should reach the lowest level of the organization and it is the supervisor who initiates and …

Optical Stability Testing Of The Fiber Support Technology (Fist) Focal Plane Assembly Of The Saber Instrument, Scott M. Jensen, J. Clair Batty, Roy Esplin, Matthew J. Felt

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

The focal plane assembly ofthe Sounding ofthe Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument is supported using Fiber Support Technology (FiST) which utilizes high performance fibers in tension to mechanically support and thermally isolate a cooled component from a warm environment. Details ofthis approach were presented in detail at 5Pm meeting in Denver in 1996. The SABER team deemed it necessary to perform optical stability testing on this never-beforeflown technology for supporting focal plane assemblies to determine ifprecise positioning could be maintained through vibration and thermal cycling. After subjecting the support system to vibration and thermal cycling, the angular orientation …
