A Comparison Of Highly Efficient Iterative Linear Solvers, Akbar Chowdhury Jan 1998

A Comparison Of Highly Efficient Iterative Linear Solvers, Akbar Chowdhury

Theses

A number of iterative techniques have recently been developed which are extremely efficient at solving systems of linear equations. Of these methods probably the most recognized is the Conjugate Gradient Method (CG). This is an extremely efficient solver and has been used successfully for a number of years now. A newer method proposed initially by Davidson [1] is studied in this paper. This method has proven itself in terms of efficiency by solving the same system (of order 2000) that was solved by the CG method. It converged in approximately 40 iterations, taking less than five minutes to do so[5], …

Our Administrative System Of Criminal Justice, Gerard E. Lynch Jan 1998

Our Administrative System Of Criminal Justice, Gerard E. Lynch

Fordham Law Review

In Honor of William M. Tendy. Bill Tendy was already a legend among federal prosecutors when I first served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York in the early 1980s. To us youngsters, Bill even then seemed a survivor from another era, when prosecutors really did resemble the tough-talking Hollywood DAs played by actors like Brian Donleavy - while we felt more like insecure young lawyers who should be played by Michael J. Fox or Calista Flockhart. Partly, of course, this was just a function of age and experience; hard as it was to …

An Upper Limit On The Τ Neutrino Mass From Three- And Five-Prong Tau Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 1998

An Upper Limit On The Τ Neutrino Mass From Three- And Five-Prong Tau Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A bound on the tau neutrino mass is established using the data collected from 1991 to 1995 at s√≃mZ with the ALEPH detector. Two separate limits are derived by fitting the distribution of visible energy vs invariant mass in τ−→2π−π+ντ and τ−→3π−2π+(π0)ντ decays. The two results are combined to obtain a 95% confidence level upper limit of 18.2 MeV/c2 on the mass of the tau neutrino.

Observation Of Doubly-Charmed B Decays At Lep, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 1998

Observation Of Doubly-Charmed B Decays At Lep, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A search for doubly-charmed B decays with both charmed mesons reconstructed is performed, using about 3.8 million hadronic Z decays recorded with the ALEPH detector at LEP. A clear signal is observed in the channels B→DsD¯(X)B→DsD¯(X) and B→DD¯(X)B→DD¯(X) (where D can be either a D00, a D++ or a D∗+∗+), providing the first direct evidence for doubly-charmed B decays involving no DsDs production. Evidence for associated K0SKS0 and K±K± production in the decays B→DD¯(X)B→DD¯(X) is also presented and some candidates for completely reconstructed decays B→DsD¯(nπ)B→DsD¯(nπ), B→DD¯K0SB→DD¯KS0 and B→DD¯K±B→DD¯K± are observed. Furthermore, candidates for the two-body Cabibbo suppressed decays B0→D∗−D∗+B0→D∗−D∗+ and …

Searches For Charginos And Neutralinos In E+E- Collisions At √S = 161 And 172 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 1998

Searches For Charginos And Neutralinos In E+E- Collisions At √S = 161 And 172 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The data recorded by the ALEPH detector at centre-of-mass energies of 161, 170, and 172 GeV are analysed for signals of chargino and neutralino production. No evidence of a signal is found, although candidate events consistent with the expectations from Standard Model processes are observed. Limits at 95% C.L. on the production cross sections are derived and bounds on the parameters of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model are set. The lower limit on the mass of the lightest ch is 85.5 GeV/c2GeV/c2 for gaugino-like charginos (μ=−500GeV/c2μ=−500GeV/c2), and 85.0 GeV/c2GeV/c2 for Higgsino-like charginos (M2=500GeV/c2M2=500GeV/c2), for heavy sneutrinos (Mν~≥200GeV/c2Mν~≥200GeV/c2) and tanβ=2–√tan⁡β=2. The …

American Indian tribes and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) realize that American Indialaska Native families and children are at-risk as incidents of child abuse and neglect, along with incidents of family violence, continue to be reported in high numbers. The Child Protection Handbook is designed to provide Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), tribal and other non-BIA employees with essential knowledge to identify and report incidents of child abuse and neglect. The handbook provides employees with an overview of applicable laws, definitions, identification indicators, training, child protection teams, and reporting procedures associated with child protection. The handbook outlines established methods …

The Data Policy Roundtable - The Future of Indian Health Information Systems was convened to explore options and develop strategies for future Indian Health Service/Tribal/Urban (I/T/U) program information systems. The concerns and needs of both tribes who chose to contract/compact and those who did not were considered. The focus was on developing strategies to create a new Indian health information system, one that was not an Indian Health Service system but rather a system designed and supported by tribal and urban health care delivery organizations and the Indian Health Service. The participants represented a broad range of concerns and needs. They identified …

Looking For "A Good Doctor": A Cultural Formulation Of The Treatment Of A First Nations Woman Using Western And First Nations Method., Gv Mohatt, S. Varvin

The following paper utilizes the DSM-IV suggested clinical and cultural formulation to present an example of how First Nations and western treatment methods can work together to treat a First Nation's woman with a serious mental disorder. The formulation provides reflections on cultural elements in the diagnosis and what distinct and common elements are present in the First Nations and western explanatory models for etiology and treatment.

The End Of Secrecy, Ann Florini Jan 1998

The End Of Secrecy, Ann Florini

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Two standards of behavior are slugging it out around the world. Advocates of well-established norms such as corporate privacy and national sovereignty want to hide information from prying eyes, while promoters of transparency tout it as the solution to everything from international financial crises to arms races and street crime. Just what is transparency? Put simply, transparency is the opposite of secrecy. Secrecy means deliberately hiding your actions; transparency means deliberately revealing them. This element of volition makes the growing acceptance of transparency much more than a resigned surrender to the technologically facilitated intrusiveness of the Information Age. Transparency is …
