Gulf Coast Research Laboratory: A Mississippi Academy, Linda Skupien, Joyce M. Shaw
Gulf and Caribbean Research
A brief overview of the creation and growth of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, this article traces the institution’s history and its strong relationship with the Mississippi Academy of Sciences. The Mississippi Academy of Sciences officially dedicated the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) with the opening of the first summer session at Magnolia State Park in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, on August 28, 1947. Mississippians in scientific and educational circles had worked for two decades toward creating a research and educational laboratory focused on the state’s marine and coastal environments. The Academy’s priorities were scholarly research and education. Political leaders were …
Indictments And Informations In Texas: The Conduct/Evidence Pleading Conundrum., Robert R. Barton
Indictments And Informations In Texas: The Conduct/Evidence Pleading Conundrum., Robert R. Barton
St. Mary's Law Journal
In the prosecution of a criminal case in Texas, the State’s primary pleading is an indictment or information. In an indictment or information, there are two basic rules for the charging of an offense. First, the defendant must be given adequate notice to prepare a defense and to plead the judgment from the trial of the case in bar to a subsequent prosecution for the same offense. Second, the State is not required to plead evidentiary matters. The simplicity of these rules exists more in their statement than in their application because circumstances exist which require the State to plead …
Reproductive Isolation Between Two Species Of Topminnow, Fundulus Olivaceus And F. Euryzonus., Thomas Allen Blanchard
Reproductive Isolation Between Two Species Of Topminnow, Fundulus Olivaceus And F. Euryzonus., Thomas Allen Blanchard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Fundulus olivaceus and F. euryzonus are sister species that commonly occur syntopically in the Amite and Tangipahoa River drainages in Louisiana and Mississippi. Although the habitats of the two species are quite similar, and the timing of their reproductive activity overlaps extensively, no natural hybrids between them have been documented. I examined physiological, as well as behavioral, factors that could potentially serve as effective isolating mechanisms between them. The courtship and spawning behaviors of the two species were relatively generalized and showed a number of similarities. Under forced mating conditions in which females were allowed to associate with heterospecific males …
Characterization And Utilization Of Flavors From Undersized Crawfish., Feng Chen
Characterization And Utilization Of Flavors From Undersized Crawfish., Feng Chen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Undersized processed crawfish are proposed to be a resource for effective recovery of crawfish flavors. Tail puree from undersized crawfish was hydrolyzed using protease APL-440 through response surface methodology to enrich flavor production. Optimal hydrolytic conditions were determined to be pH $8{\sim}9,\ 65\sp\circ$C, 0.3% (V/W) enzyme/substrate ratio with the reaction maintained at 33.3% puree concentration over 60 min period. Effects of storage time and extraction method on the crawfish flavor profile were evaluated. Shorter storage time gave superior flavor stocks with less oxidized flavors. The shelf-life of frozen crawfish puree was at least six months. Atmospheric simultaneous distillation-solvent extraction (A-SDE) …
Pliocene And Pleistocene Marine Ostracoda Of The Limon Basin, Costa Rica: A Record Of Paleoenvironmental Change., Pamela Frances Borne
Pliocene And Pleistocene Marine Ostracoda Of The Limon Basin, Costa Rica: A Record Of Paleoenvironmental Change., Pamela Frances Borne
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Late Pliocene (3.8-3.6 Ma) and early Pleistocene (1.5-0.9 Ma) marine ostracodes of the Rio Banano, Quebrada Chocolate and Moin Formations (Limon Group) provide a detailed paleoenvironmental record for the Limon Basin, Costa Rica. The marine ostracode assemblages recovered from the Limon region do not provide evidence that the tropics cooled dramatically during the late Pliocene when the Northern Hemisphere was entering the Modern Ice Age. Paleoenvironmental interpretations are based on cluster analyses and a modern tropical ostracode analog analysis. Diverse ostracode assemblages of the middle Pliocene Rio Banano Formation are dominated by genera typical of the inner to middle neritic …
An Analytical Approach To A Tree-Farm Wetland Study., Robert Cunninghame Davidge
An Analytical Approach To A Tree-Farm Wetland Study., Robert Cunninghame Davidge
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Wetland delineation is important because federal and local government regulations limit permissible uses of wetlands. Federal delineation regulations are based upon the use of a manual jointly agreed upon by EPA, USACOE, and NRCS. The manual provides for classification of land as either wetland or non-wetland based upon the 3 criteria of soil, vegetation, and hydrology. No provision is made for gradation between categorical wetland and categorical non-wetland. Controversy has sometimes developed between landowners and environmentalists as to proper wetland classification; some delineations have been considered arbitrary. The analytical method of wetland appraisal provides a means of assigning continuous numerical …
Physical And Chemical Properties Of Fibers Extracted From Sugarcane And Kenaf Rind., Simona Cristina Romanoschi
Physical And Chemical Properties Of Fibers Extracted From Sugarcane And Kenaf Rind., Simona Cristina Romanoschi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Sugar cane fibers were extracted from the rind of cane stalks with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solutions of different concentrations, at atmospheric pressure, followed by a steam explosion. The extraction process was optimized using a central rotatable composite design, to study the influence of three reaction parameters (alkaline concentration, time of reaction and frequency of tumbling) on fiber bundle properties (weight, length, and tex). Tex was the objective function, with length as a constraint. Regression analysis indicated a quadratic polynomial response. Bleaching studies were conducted on sugar cane fibers extracted with 1.0N NaOH and on kenaf fibers mechanically processed only. Hydrogen …
Rapid Assessment Of The Bacteriological Quality Of Milk By The Use Of Adenosine Triphosphate Bioluminescence., Pushpa John Samkutty
Rapid Assessment Of The Bacteriological Quality Of Milk By The Use Of Adenosine Triphosphate Bioluminescence., Pushpa John Samkutty
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Raw milk samples (n = 246) and pasteurized milk samples (n = 104) were analyzed to determine adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and compared with the standard plate count (SPC). An ATP filtration method was used to filter milk samples prior to ATP determination, which was measured in relative light units (RLU). The ATP assay took approximately 7 minutes to complete and could allow rapid prediction of SPC which is a measure of raw milk quality. Linear regression analysis was performed on data from three raw milk treatments defined as; fresh milk samples, samples preliminarily incubated at 12.8 and 15.6$\sp\circ$C for 18 …

Least squares analysis of variance procedures were used for comparisons of mating systems for all traits. Estimates of direct and maternal additive (Ig, …
Cloning And Identification Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Genes And Proteins Upregulated Under Low Carbon Dioxide Conditions., Aravind Somanchi
Cloning And Identification Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Genes And Proteins Upregulated Under Low Carbon Dioxide Conditions., Aravind Somanchi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A mechanism that concentrates CO$\sb2$ in cells of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, is induced when cells are grown at low CO$\sb2$ conditions. This mechanism increases the CO$\sb2$ concentration at the site of RuBisCO, and thereby improves the efficiency of C$\rm\sb{i}$ uptake and fixation. Cells adapting to low CO$\sb2$ show significant physiological changes. Few of the genes encoding proteins needed to produce these changes have been identified. A cDNA library has been constructed from C. reinhardtii to identify genes involved in these changes. The cloning and identification of several cDNAs that are upregulated under low CO$\sb2$ conditions are reported here. The possible roles …

Dynamics And Management Of Insecticide Resistance In The Horn Fly, Haematobia Irritans Irritans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae)., Antonio Thadeu Medeiros De Barros
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Studies on resistance of the horn fly, Haematobia irritans irritans (L.), to insecticides were conducted in Louisiana from 1989 to 1998. These studies included monitoring resistance and resistance dynamics under different strategies of insecticide use, monitoring the efficacy of insecticide products, establishing a relationship between bioassay findings and product efficacy, and evaluation of a new insecticide class. In four years (1989--1992), efficacy of 20% diazinon-impregnated car tags used yearly was reduced from greater than twenty to just one week of control, and tag failure was observed with resistance ratios (RR) from 1.8 to 5.7. Diazinon resistance developed more slowly and …

An Exploratory Study Of The Impact Of Hypermedia-Based Approach And Science-In-Fiction Approach For Instruction On The Polymerase Chain Reaction., Lynda A. Britton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Exploration of meaningful learning of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed instruction by a researcher-developed hypermedia computer program that incorporated human constructivist principles and a "science-in-fiction" chapter of a novel that described PCR. Human constructivism is the Ausubel-Novak-Gowin (1997) meaningful learning theory that supports science learning through graphic representations and multiple examples. Science-in-fiction is a new genre of fiction introduced by the prominent scientist, Carl Djerassi, to engender an appreciation for science, and its ethical dilemmas. Chapter 19 of Djerassi's 1994 novel, The Bourbaki Gambit, was placed into hypermedia format to standardize the presentation. As part of a clinical microbiology …

Purification Of Porphobilinogen Deaminase And The Sequencing And Expression Of Thehemc Gene Of Rhodobacter Capsulatus., Keith A. Canada
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Rhodobacter capsulatus uses the common tetrapyrrole pathway to synthesize heme, bacteriochlorophyll, siroheme and vitamin B-12. As part of our studies on the regulation of this pathway, the product of the hemC gene, porphobilinogen deaminase was purified approximately 200-fold. The molecular weight, isoelectric point, pH optimum and Km of the enzyme were all similar to other porphobilinogen deaminases. The stoichiometry of the enzyme was found not to be the expected four porphobilinogens used per one uroporphyrin formed. Rather a 9:1 ratio was typically seen. Further study of this atypical ratio uncovered evidence of possible in vivo regulation of porphobilinogen deaminase dependant …

A Review Of The North American Squalodontidae (Mammalia, Cetacea)., Alton Cline Dooley Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
All available North American specimens of squalodont whales were examined to determine species assignments, and to determine functional aspects and ecological implications. Only two existing species of the 17 referred to Squalodontidae from North America are members of that family, Squalodon atlanticus and Squalodon calvertensis. Of these two species, only S. calvertensis is based on adequate material for consideration as a valid species. Squalodon calvertensis is redescribed, based on the material which has been collected since 1923. These specimens indicate that the species is found from New Jersey to North Carolina, in the Miocene Kirkwood, Calvert, and Pungo River Formations. …
Materials Fluxes Across Different Scales Of Time And Space In The Rhone Delta, France., Philippe Francois Hensel
Materials Fluxes Across Different Scales Of Time And Space In The Rhone Delta, France., Philippe Francois Hensel
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A study of materials fluxes across different scales of time and space was conducted in the Rhone Delta, France, to test the applicability of a conceptual model of deltaic ecosystem function in a scenario of accelerated sea-level rise to a mediterranean delta which has been heavily altered by human activities. Natural pulsing events such as tides, river floods and storms cause sediment surfaces to maintain elevation in the face of relative sea level rise through the process of soil formation. These pulses also enhance ecosystem function through habitat creation, food production, materials transformation, water quality and storm and flood protection. …
Biology And Ecology Of The Anopheles Quadrimaculatus Sibling Species Complex In Louisiana., Cynthia Roxanne Rutledge
Biology And Ecology Of The Anopheles Quadrimaculatus Sibling Species Complex In Louisiana., Cynthia Roxanne Rutledge
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A polymerase chain reaction method for identifying individuals in the Anopheles quadrimaculatus Say sibling species complex was validated for wild mosquitoes from Louisiana and Mississippi. This method distinguished An. quadrimaculatus species A, B, C, and D by detecting species-specific differences in the 2nd internal transcribed spacer of ribosomal DNA and was 100% specific and 95% sensitive. A polymerase chain reaction assay that detects differences in the second internal transcribed spacer of ribosomal DNA was tested for its usefulness in identifying all immature stages of two representatives in the An. quadrimaculatus sibling species complex. The technique was successful in amplifying DNA …
The License Is The Product: Comments On The Promise Of Article 2b For Software And Information Licensing, Robert W. Gomulkiewicz
The License Is The Product: Comments On The Promise Of Article 2b For Software And Information Licensing, Robert W. Gomulkiewicz
Articles
Article 2B promises to draw together contract principles for software and information licensing that, at present, are spread among various bodies of law.
This Article argues that Article 2B must affirm industry standard licensing practices in order to prove beneficial. For example, Article 2B's affirmation of industry standard mass market licensing is important for both publishers and end users. Article 2B must also provide the flexibility to accommodate new distribution and licensing models that will arise as electronic commerce matures. Any other approach would fundamentally disrupt the software and information industries.
Moreover, this Article urges the drafters of Article 2B …
Federalism In The Era Of International Standards: Federal And State Government Regulation Of Merchant Vessels In The United States (Part I), Craig H. Allen
Federalism In The Era Of International Standards: Federal And State Government Regulation Of Merchant Vessels In The United States (Part I), Craig H. Allen
Articles
In examining federalism issues relevant to merchant vessels, this article will distinguish between those laws and regulations governing liability for harm and those which regulate safety. Federalism questions arise most frequently in the former, private, maritime law domain, when courts are called upon to determine judicial jurisdiction and the extent to which state law may be applied to adjudicate liability and damages in cases falling within the admiralty and maritime jurisdiction. Less frequently, the federalism debate focuses on public maritime law, when states seek to regulate commercial vessel safety or vessel-source pollution.
This article will begin with an examination of …

Couriers Without Luggage: Negotiable Instruments And Digital Signatures, Jane Kaufman Winn
Articles
Prior to the very recent explosion of interest in the Internet, for decades electronic commerce had been conducted on a large scale over closed networks. Since the late 1960s, billions of dollars in funds transfers have been executed over networked computer systems such as the Federal Reserve Wire Network (Fedwire), Clearing House Interbank Payment System (CHIPS), and the automated clearing house system (ACH); billions of dollars of goods have been sold over electronic data interchange networks. These closed, proprietary networks were built during the era of mainframe computer systems and are now being challenged by open networks of distributed client-server …
