A New Subspecies Of Meriones Tristrami Thomas, 1892 (Rodentia:Gerbillinae) From Kilis (Southeastern Turkey):Meriones Tristrami Kilisensis Subsp. N., Nuri Yi̇ği̇t, Ercüment Çolak

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this study, seventeen specimens of Meriones tristrami from Kilis were compared with the specimens of Meriones tristrami bodenheimeri along with topotypes of Meriones tristrami lycaon close to those from Kilis. It was determined that the specimens from Kilis were distinguishable from M.t. lycaon by characters such as dorsal coloration, Tx100 / HB (ratio of tail length to head and body), zygomatic breadth, occipitonasal length, basal length, diastema length, occipital width, weight, baculum shape and fundamental number of chromosomes. Thus, the specimens of M. tristrami from Kilis were determined to be a new subspecies, Meriones tristrami kilisensis subps. n.

The Impact Of The Physical And Cultural Geography Of Southeastern Utah On Latter-Day Settlement, Sally Timmins Mandurino Jan 1998

The Impact Of The Physical And Cultural Geography Of Southeastern Utah On Latter-Day Settlement, Sally Timmins Mandurino

Theses and Dissertations

The Latter-day Saint settlements in southeastern Utah, namely Bluff, Monticello and Blanding, were impacted by the physical and cultural geography of the area. These geographic elements hindered, and in some cases prevented, the Latter-day Saint colonizers from fulfilling the seven basic principles of Latter-day Saint expansion and colonization in the Great Basin. The impacts of physical geography were the geology, the climate, the soil and the rivers and streams. The impacts of cultural geography were the Navajo Indian Tribe, the Paiute Indian Tribe, and the criminal element. This thesis discusses the geographic elements of the area, how they impacted the …

An Object-Based Evolutionary Algorithm: The Nesting Solution, Kanchitpol Ratanapan, Cihan H. Dagli Jan 1998

An Object-Based Evolutionary Algorithm: The Nesting Solution, Kanchitpol Ratanapan, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The nesting problems have received considerable attention and have been addressed by a variety of algorithms. Recently, evolutionary algorithms have been adopted for solutions. Most of these algorithms, however, require a search in one-dimensional space; thus a transformation of the problem to a single dimension, as in the sequencing problems, is needed. Unfortunately, this restricts the search space. In this study an object-based evolutionary algorithm for the nesting problems is proposed. The methodology is created in a true two-dimensional space, allowing object-based mechanisms and object-based evolutionary operators to perform effectively on the space without restricting search alternatives. Implementation of the …

Instituting Environmental Protection: From Red To Green In Poland, Daniel H. Cole Jan 1998

Instituting Environmental Protection: From Red To Green In Poland, Daniel H. Cole

Books & Book Chapters by Maurer Faculty

Under socialism, Poland suffered tremendous environmental devastation. After socialism, Poland's environmental performance has improved remarkably. This book explains that system-specific institutions of socialism undermined environmental protection by creating regulatory conflicts of interest that led the Party/state to soften budget and law constraints on polluters. Those problems have diminished in post-Communist Poland as socialist legal, political and economic institutions have been replaced by liberal-democratic institutions and competitive markets. The analysis carries important implications for an institutional theory of environmental protection.

Relationship Between Attachment And Out-Of-Home Placements In Emotionally And Behaviorally Disordered Male Adolescents, Gail M. Curran Jan 1998

Relationship Between Attachment And Out-Of-Home Placements In Emotionally And Behaviorally Disordered Male Adolescents, Gail M. Curran

Open Access Master's Theses

Since its inception, Bowlby's attachment theory has guided research in the area of attachment. A body of literature supports the conclusion that when attachment needs are not met in the first year of life, serious deficits and problems can occur. The present study adds to the existing literature by examining attachment in adolescents, an age group not frequently researched. Specifically, this study examines the relationship between attachment and multiple out-of-home placements for adolescent males living in a residential treatment facility.

In order to understand the characteristics of youth living in a residential treatment facility, an archival search was completed to …

Logiccity: On-Line Digital Logic Simulator, Jihad Z. Almahayni Jan 1998

Logiccity: On-Line Digital Logic Simulator, Jihad Z. Almahayni

Open Access Master's Theses

A primary challenge for science educators is to develop ways to help students understand new ideas that cannot be directly observed. The application of computer simulations is one method instructors may use to address the problem of teaching for conceptual understanding. The use of computer simulations for science teaching is increasing steadily because simulations provide students with the opportunity to witness or "perform" experiments that might otherwise be too expensive, too time consuming, or too dangerous for them to do in the lab. Simulation, in general, is a very effective way for both a student and a professional to visualize …

Bioactivity Of Marine Organisms: Relationships With Taxonomy, Geography And Depth., John K. Reed, Susan H. Sennett, Peter J. Mccarthy, Tara P. Pitts, Amy E. Wright, Shirley A. Pomponi

Faculty Scholarship

Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) has a worldwide collection of over 25,000 marine macro-invertebrates and algae representing diverse geographical, latitudinal, and depth (0-3000 ft) ranges. Samples are tested for biological activity in a panel of whole cell and enzyme/receptor assays, including antibacterial, antifungal, cytotoxicity, antitumor, and immunomodulatory assays. Of the taxa sampled, Porifera have the greatest incidence of activity within these screens and especially within the antimicrobial assays. Cnidaria, Chordata (Ascidiacea), Phaeophyta, and Chlorophyta also show strong antimicrobial activity. A comparison of bioactivity and depth of collection indicates that benthic organisms are active throughout the depth range of this study. …

A Structural Analysis Of The Information Problem Solving Strategies Of Selected Home Schooled Students, Jacquelyn M. Stoakes Jan 1998

A Structural Analysis Of The Information Problem Solving Strategies Of Selected Home Schooled Students, Jacquelyn M. Stoakes

Graduate Research Papers

This research investigated the information problem solving curriculum of home schooled students who lived in four central Iowa school districts, all of whom belonged to the same home school networking group. Fourteen home schooling parents were interviewed, and asked to respond to questions dealing with the research process, and how those skills were being taught, the major focus being on whether the skills were taught as part of the curriculum, or in supplement to it, and whether information problem solving was taught as a process or separately as content. Use of electronic searching was also investigated.

This study indicated that …

Technology And Its Impact On Language Arts, Tresa Ann Dietrich

Graduate Research Papers

Language arts is a field where technology can be worked into the writing and reading fields with word processors, CD-ROMs, and other multimedia materials that focus on communication. Learning to effectively communicate is one goal of language arts education. This encompasses speaking, listening, writing, and presentation – utilizing all the available technologies and incorporating them into highly motivating and innovative units or activities.
