Pathfinding In Vrml, Jason Richard Pearce Jan 1998

Pathfinding In Vrml, Jason Richard Pearce

Theses : Honours

Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) is a scene description language which describes three dimensional (3D) space to a computer. Thus the three axis of space that is inherent in our dimension X Y and Z is represented inside a computer. To many people VRML represents a new beginning for the World Wide Web (WWW) because it behaves more like the real world. VRML is experimental, interactive, continuous and of course, three dimensional. Algorithms in computing have been designed for 2D problem solving and this does not necessarily translate to problem solving on a 3D level. The aim of this project …

Behaviour Of Gilbert's Potoroo (Potorous Gilbertii Gould) In Captivity, Kylie Dijon Burke Jan 1998

Behaviour Of Gilbert's Potoroo (Potorous Gilbertii Gould) In Captivity, Kylie Dijon Burke

Theses : Honours

In late 1994, Gilbert's Potoroo was rediscovered almost 120 years after it was believed to have become extinct. It was found at Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve, near Albany, Western Australia. Since then, it has become urgent that detailed studies of the potoroo's behaviour and ecology be undertaken, so as to increase the understanding of the needs of 'this critically endangered marsupial. Due to its critical status, increasing the number of animals is of paramount importance to the continued survival of this species. An understanding of the behavioural repertoire of the species will aid in its recovery and provide the …

The Soil Acarine Fauna Of Selected Agroecosystems Within The York Shire, Derek Juan Swarts Jan 1998

The Soil Acarine Fauna Of Selected Agroecosystems Within The York Shire, Derek Juan Swarts

Theses : Honours

The practice of broadacre, dryland farming is known to affect the physico-chemical structure of the soil but our knowledge or its impact on the biological structure is rudimentary. The soil acarine (mite) communities which inhabit these soils display a variety of responses to this agricultural practice. With the increasing focus on developing ecologically sustainable agricultural techniques, an understanding of the soil acari becomes increasingly important. This study investigated the impact of two agricultural practices (designated here us Conventional and Non-Conventional) upon the abundance and diversity of the soil acari. Conventional agricultural practice involved broad scale chemical application to weeds and …

The Birds And Habitat Of Kings Park, Bradley W. Cox Jan 1998

The Birds And Habitat Of Kings Park, Bradley W. Cox

Theses : Honours

Kings Park is a large urban park in the centre of Perth with extensive areas of semi-natural bushland. The park is an important refuge for birds in the metropolitan area but is losing species through habitat disturbance. Understanding the way in which birds are related to their habitat helps to understand the effect of habitat disturbance on the bird community. The aim of this project was to generate guidelines which will aid in the management and conservation of birds in the park, through an understanding of the relationship of the birds to their habitat. The avifauna and various habitat factors …

Web Based Customer Support In Banking And Financial Services, Kevin C. D'Silva Jan 1998

Web Based Customer Support In Banking And Financial Services, Kevin C. D'Silva

Theses : Honours

As customers become more sophisticated and competition increases in the marketplace, companies need to provide better service to gain a competitive advantage. The World Wide Web (WWW) offers companies the opportunity to provide service to their customers 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Companies are taking advantage of this opportunity by making the WWW the customer service tool of the future. This project was conducted to develop a model for evaluating the level of customer service and support provided by corporate Web sites. The model was developed by adapting Lovelock’s Flower of Service Model (1994) to Web …

To Develop And Implement A Quality Assurance System Based On Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (Haccp) To A Cook-Freeze Operation: Research Project, Denisa Baca Jan 1998

To Develop And Implement A Quality Assurance System Based On Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (Haccp) To A Cook-Freeze Operation: Research Project, Denisa Baca

Theses : Honours

The purpose of this study was to identify and develop a suitable quality assurance system based on Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), which was implemented to the ‘cook-freeze' operation, currently employed at Healthcarc Foods. In addition, the quality assurance system was implemented as a systematic approach to food quality, and as a means of ensuring food safety. The samples, which consisted of all the chicken dishes, were used in the development of the HACCP plans comprising of flowcharts and HACCP control charts. These dishes are regarded as 'high risk', in terms of microbiological growth, and therefore, were chosen to …

The In Vitro Propagation Of Seagrasses : Halophila Ovalis, Ruppia Megacarpa And Posidonia Coriacea, Melissa Grace Henry Jan 1998

The In Vitro Propagation Of Seagrasses : Halophila Ovalis, Ruppia Megacarpa And Posidonia Coriacea, Melissa Grace Henry

Theses : Honours

Seagrass communities are of high ecological and economic significance. They provide a nursery area for commercial and recreational juvenile fish and crustacea. Seagrasses also play an important role in influencing the structure and function of many estuarine and nearshore marine environments. Unfortunately, the decline of seagrasses, as a result of human impact, has increased in recent years. This decline has become a major problem throughout the world. Current methods used to restore degraded seagrass beds are limited, the most promising being transplanting material from healthy donor beds. This approach is expensive because it is labor intensive and damages the donor …

Detection Of Rancidity In Peanuts, Sophe Williamson Jan 1998

Detection Of Rancidity In Peanuts, Sophe Williamson

Theses : Honours

As peanuts age, the lipid component deteriorates, and the peanuts become rancid. The Health Department of Western Australia has received numerous complaints from consumers who are unsatisfied with the quality of peanuts they have purchased from certain grocers. Presently there is no standard methodology for detecting rancidity m peanuts, thus enabling grocers to continue selling peanuts of poor quality. In an attempt to overcome this problem, a standardised methodology needs to be developed, which will enable offending grocers to be prosecuted The three methodologies trialed were the Peroxide Value (PV), Acid Value (AV), and Fatty Acid Profile (FAP) methods. In …

El Gaucho Como Personaje Historico En La Literatura Argentina, Nora M. C. De Sidoruk Jan 1998

El Gaucho Como Personaje Historico En La Literatura Argentina, Nora M. C. De Sidoruk

Theses : Honours

The aim of this study is to analyse how three different Argentinian writers: Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, José Hernández and Ricardo Güiraldes characterise in their work the life of the Argentinian cowboy, the gaucho. Using real life models, they describe the life and personality of this countryman after the colonial times and until the first part of the twentieth century. Domingo Faustino Sarmiento (1811-1888), an essayist, politician and educationalist, wrote Facundo in 1845, an essay about the life of the "caudillo" (chieftain) Juan Facundo Quiroga and one of the classics of Argentinian literature. Facundo is a study of the Argentinian customs …

Resource management technical reports

High water use vegetation systems for salinity control were trialed on a 70 ha catchment located about 15 km north of Williams, Western Australia. The catchment receives about 545 mm annual rainfall and 1870 mm annual evaporation. Development of salinity is characterised by passive discharge upslope from a dolerite dyke. Because recharge exceeds the discharge capacity of current seeps, there is potential for new seeps to develop in the mid to lower slopes.

The Study Of Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa) Production In The Community Of El Troje, Juan Leopoldo Penafiel Alvarado

Theses and Dissertations

The alfalfa harvest in Ecuador constitutes one of the most important activities, especially as a primary product for animal feeding. The crop is widely distributed in the mountain region of the country. It is important to have studies on the production systems, which facilitate a real and compete vision of those characteristics that interact among them in the agricultural production. With this knowledge it will be possible to look for the most adequate solutions to the conditions of the area where alfalfa is produced. The objectives of the study reported herein were: 1. To make an agricultural, social and economical …

Fraud And Federalism: Preempting Private State Securities Fraud Causes Of Action, Michael A. Perino Jan 1998

Fraud And Federalism: Preempting Private State Securities Fraud Causes Of Action, Michael A. Perino

Faculty Publications

The passage of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 has engendered a significant forum shift in class action securities fraud litigation, from federal to state court. This unintended by-product of the Act has reignited debate over our dual federal-state system of securities regulation and in turn has inspired a discussion as to whether Congress should now preempt state securities fraud causes of action. This article argues that preemption is an appropriate, but not the only, solution to these concerns. To support this argument, this article first traces the history of dual state-federal securities regulation within the context of …
