Western Australian Fisheries - Key Achievements 1997-1998, Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries Published Reports

The WA fishing community can look back at the past year with considerable satisfaction.

Close partnership arrangements between Government, industry, the community and Fisheries Western Australia have both consolidated and advanced the State's position at the forefront of sustainable management of marine environments and fish resources.

Together, commercial fishing and recreational fishing make 􀁚 annual $1.5 billion contribution to the Western Australian economy. 1080 Operational Procedures Manual - Second Edition, Agriculture Western Australia

Biosecurity published reports

Sodium fluoroacetate (1080) is an extremely toxic substance which can be a danger to humans if handled incorrectly. At the same time 1080 is the most effective and efficient poison for the control of Western Australia's main vertebrate pest species including rabbits, wild dogs and foxes. One of the main reasons for its usefulness in Western Australia is that many native animals have a high tolerance to it and so may not be affected by baiting.

Industry Resource Protection Program (IRPP) This program, part of Agriculture Western Australia, supports feral animal control carried out by its staff and community groups. …

A Measure Of Emotional Empathy For Adolescents And Adults, David R. Caruso, John D. Mayer Jan 1998

A Measure Of Emotional Empathy For Adolescents And Adults, David R. Caruso, John D. Mayer

UNH Personality Lab

A new, multi-dimensional scale of emotional empathy is described. The scale consists of 30 items and was administered to 793 adolescents and adults. A principal components analysis yielded six meaningful factors. Alpha reliabilities for all scale scores were moderate to high, and the scales demonstrate significant relationships to a number of behavioral criteria. The new empathy scale measures emotional aspects of empathy and can be used by researchers interested in a general measure of emotional empathy as well as providing detailed sub-scales.

Basic Incompatibilities Between Evolutionary And Behavioral Archaeology, Michael J. O'Brien, R. L. Lyman, R. D. Leonard Jan 1998

Basic Incompatibilities Between Evolutionary And Behavioral Archaeology, Michael J. O'Brien, R. L. Lyman, R. D. Leonard

History Faculty Publications (Archived)

Schiffer (1996) recently proposed that, despite some incompatibilities, considerable common ground exists between behavioral archaeology and evolutionary or selectionist, archaeology. He concludes that there is no fundamental reason why the two approaches cannot work in concert to explain human behavioral change. There are, however, several important reasons why the two programs, at least as currently conceived, cannot work together in any thoroughly integrated fashion. Although both programs employ inference, behavioral archaeology conflates the distinct roles of configurational and immanent properties, searches for nomothetic answers to questions about human behavior, overlooks historical contingency when inferring and explaining the nature of past …

Fecal Coliform Transport Through Intact Soil Blocks Amended With Poultry Manure, S. W. Mcmurry, Mark S. Coyne, E. Perfect Jan 1998

Fecal Coliform Transport Through Intact Soil Blocks Amended With Poultry Manure, S. W. Mcmurry, Mark S. Coyne, E. Perfect

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Poultry production in Kentucky increased almost 200% between 1991 and 1995. Their waste is typically land applied, and fecal pathogen runoff and infiltration may cause nonpoint source groundwater pollution. We looked at the preferential flow of fecal coliforms through undisturbed soil blocks since fecal bacteria typically infiltrate the soil profile to contaminate groundwater. Poultry manure was uniformly distributed on top of sod-covered or tilled (upper 12.5 cm) soil blocks and the blocks were irrigated. Drainage was collected in 100 uniformly spaced cells beneath each block and analyzed for fecal coliform content and drainage volume. The spatial distribution of drainage and …

Contribution To The Taxonomy, Distribution And Karyology Of Martes Foina(Erxleben, 1777) (Mammalia: Carnivora) In Turkey, Nuri Yi̇ği̇t, Ercüment Çolak, Mustafa Sözen, Şakir Özkurt

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this preliminary study, nine Stone Martens were recorded from different localities in Turkey. Their morphological characteristics were found to be consistent with previously published papers. However, the throat patches of Turkish Stone Martens show variations with respect to shape. In addition, it was determined that the morphologic and biometric characteristics of Turkish samples were consistent with those of M. f. syriaca. According to the karyological findings, the diploid number of chromosomes and the fundamental number were 38 and 76, respectively.

Mugil so-iuyis a freshwater fish living in Amu Darya River Basin, Far East Asia. It was first introduced to the area around the Sea of Azov for fish farming but, then migrated to the Black Sea, and from there to the Sea of Marmara. The present study is the first report from the Aegean Sea. Morphometrical and meristic characteristics of the two specimens caught are described.

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Potential problems with the use of viral vectors for gene therapy necessitate the development of efficient nonviral vectors. The association of transferrin, or the pH-sensitive peptide GALA, with cationic liposomes composed of 1,2-dioleoyl-3-(trimethylammonium) propane and its equimolar mixture with dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine, under conditions where the liposome/DNA complex is negatively charged, drastically increased luciferase expression from pCMVluc. The percentage of cells transfected, measured by β-galactosidase expression, was also increased by about 10-fold. The zeta potential of the ternary complexes was lower than that of the liposome/DNA complexes. Transfection activity of positively charged complexes was also enhanced by association with transferrin, GALA or …

Locating A Mate In 3d: The Case Of Temora Longicornis, Michael H. Doall, Sean Colin, J. Rudi Strickler, Jeannette Yen

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Using laser optics to illuminate high–resolution video–recordings, we revealed behavioural mechanisms through which males of the calanoid copepod species Temora longicornis locate females. Males of T. longicornis swam at significantly faster speeds than females along more sinuous routes, possibly reflecting adaptations to increase encounter with females. Upon approaching within 2 mm (i.e. two bodylengths) of a female's swimming path, males accelerated to significantly higher pursuit speeds. Pursuit trajectories closely traced the trajectories of females, suggesting that males were following detectable trails created by swimming females. Males of T. longicornis detected female trails up to at least 10 s old, and …

The Government Contractor Defense: Breaking The Boyle Barrier, Charles E. Cantú, Randy W. Young Jan 1998

The Government Contractor Defense: Breaking The Boyle Barrier, Charles E. Cantú, Randy W. Young

Faculty Articles

The government contract defense, known as the Boyle defense, shields those successfully invoking it from liability for injuries caused by defective products they manufactured. The contract specification defense is afforded to both private and government contractors when they follow the directions and specifications of a third party, usually the employer.

The first element of the Boyle defense requires that the government approve reasonably precise specifications for the equipment’s design. The contractor must show that a team-like effort existed in all communications between the contractor and the government, with the government providing general specifications and approval at various stages of project …

Playing Noah, John Copeland Nagle Jan 1998

Playing Noah, John Copeland Nagle

Journal Articles

The biblical story of Noah and the ark has been cited by numerous writers as a justification for the protections contained in the Endangered Species Act. In that story, Genesis reports that God instructed Noah to save two of every species from the flood that would destroy life on earth, and that after doing so God established a covenant with Noah and the animals that were saved. The story has inspired writers and activists to posit a duty to imitate Noah today when we struggle to provide the resources and the will to protect all species, however popular or obscure, …
