Wood Frog (Rana Sylvatica) Use Of Wildlife Ponds In Northcentral Arkansas, Michael E. Cartwright, Stanley E. Trauth, J. D. Wilhide Jan 1998

Wood Frog (Rana Sylvatica) Use Of Wildlife Ponds In Northcentral Arkansas, Michael E. Cartwright, Stanley E. Trauth, J. D. Wilhide

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Forty-one wildlife ponds were monitored between 1988 and 1992 for breeding use by wood frogs (Rana sylvatica). Data were collected on egg deposition and pond characteristics. Breeding activity and characteristics were similar to that reported in other portions of the range of the wood frog. We also monitored 15 newly-constructed ponds to determine chronological breeding patterns. Data collected for each site indicated a significant increase (P< 0.05) in the number of egg masses deposited in ponds as they age from 1-3 years during our study period. Increased chronological use of newly-constructed ponds may be due to localized population increase resulting from greater availability of breeding habitat

In-Stream Monitoring Of Sediments And Water In The Lower Ouachita River For Site Impact To Aquatic Biota, Jerry L. Farris, J. T. Knight, C. D. Milam, F. Buzen, J. F. Nix Jan 1998

In-Stream Monitoring Of Sediments And Water In The Lower Ouachita River For Site Impact To Aquatic Biota, Jerry L. Farris, J. T. Knight, C. D. Milam, F. Buzen, J. F. Nix

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Reported reduced sportfish densities in the main channel of the Ouachita River prompted an investigation, beginning in 1990, into potential causes of ongoing impairment to aquatic biota. In-stream monitoring that incorporated toxicity testing of sediments and water was conducted to discern potential sources of contaminants that might be related to the suboptimal fishery populations. Organisms selected to evaluate chronic impairment included larval fish, clams, midges and water fleas. The fathead minnow {Pimephales promelas) and cladoceran (Ceriodaphnia dubid) were used to estimate patterns of toxicity associated with water from seven designated reaches and selected tributaries of the Ouachita River. Larval survival …

In Vitro Growth Characteristics Of Two Cryptococcus Neoformans Isolates, Kristy L. Jones, Juneann W. Murphy Jan 1998

In Vitro Growth Characteristics Of Two Cryptococcus Neoformans Isolates, Kristy L. Jones, Juneann W. Murphy

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Cryptococcus neoformans is an opportunistic pathogen which attacks individuals with weakened immune systems. Two C. neoformans isolates, 184A and NU-2, were examined to determine characteristics that contribute to their difference in virulence. Both isolates were grown under tissue culture conditions, and different characteristics were tested at timed intervals. Isolate 184A was found to grow at a faster rate than isolate NU-2, with doubling times of 4 and 12 hours respectively. The polysaccharide capsule of isolate NU-2 doubled in size in four hours, while that of isolate 184A stayed approximately the same. The NU-2 yeast cell diameter without the polysaccharide capsule …

Effects Of Agricultural Practices On Nutrient Concentrations And Loads In Two Small Watersheds, Northwestern Arkansas, Robin G. Roggio, Kenneth F. Steele, P. F. Vendrell, M. A. Nelson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The water quality of two small, adjacent watersheds was monitored to determine the effect of land use on nutrient loads and flow-weighted mean concentrations. Poultry litter and liquid swine waste are surface applied as fertilizer to pastures that are used for hay production and beef cattle grazing. The study area is located in northwestern Arkansas, east central Washington County. Cannon Creek, the less influenced watershed (628 hectares), contains 11% pasture; whereas, Shumate Creek, the more influenced watershed (589 hectares), contains 22% pasture and receives approximately four times more land applied animal waste as fertilizer. The remaining land cover in both …

Telemetric Observations Of Foraging Ozark Big-Eared Bats In Arkansas, J. D. Wilhide, V. Rick Mcdaniel, Michael J. Harvey, Daniel R. White

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Ozark big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii ingens) foraging activities were studied during 1995 in Marion County, Arkansas. Adult bats were equipped with radiotransmitters and tracked during June and July. Foraging activities were generally within 1 kilometer (km) of the roost cave. Male bats ranged farther than females with the exception of one female that flew 2.5 km into a different watershed. Male big-eared bats and northern long-eared bats (Myotis septentrionalis) were also found within the maternity colony.

Nmda Receptor Antagonist Mk801 Did Not Produce State-Dependent Learning In Goldfish, Denver S. Gunn Jan 1998

Nmda Receptor Antagonist Mk801 Did Not Produce State-Dependent Learning In Goldfish, Denver S. Gunn

McNair Scholars Journal

Previous investigations have shown that MK~801, a non-competitive N-methyl-D- aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, produced anterograde amnesia (AA) at doses that did not impair performance processes necessary for learning to occur. Furthermore, MK~80 1 did not produce retrograde amnesia (RA). Using active avoidance conditioning as the learning paradigm and a 2x2 factorial design, the present study examined whether MK-801 produced state-dependent learning (SDL) resulting in AA. Our results showed that MK~801 did not produce SDL. This suggested that AA produced by MK-801 cannot be due to SDL. These results combined with previous findings suggest tha tMK-801 specifically impaired learning processes.

The Effects Of Organic Fertilizers And Biostimulants On The Bacterial Populations Of Golf Course Greens, Tees, And Fairways, Audelia Munguia Jan 1998

The Effects Of Organic Fertilizers And Biostimulants On The Bacterial Populations Of Golf Course Greens, Tees, And Fairways, Audelia Munguia

McNair Scholars Journal

Organic fertilizers and biostimulants were tested on Grand Valley State University's Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Michigan. Five greens, four tees, and three fairways were each treated with a different organic fertilizer or biostimulant. Core soil samples were diluted and placed on several selective media. The isolated colonies were counted and identified. Preliminary data suggests that for the agents tested there is no statistically significant difference in the numbers and kinds of bacteria retrieved. This is meaningful because there is a substantial difference in the ease of application and cost between agents used.

Presence Of Estrogen Receptor-Containing Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone-Immunoreactive Cells In The Sheep Hypothalamus, Corey M. Soumis Jan 1998

Presence Of Estrogen Receptor-Containing Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone-Immunoreactive Cells In The Sheep Hypothalamus, Corey M. Soumis

McNair Scholars Journal

The shift in reproductive activity brought about by a dramatic change in the way the female sheep brain interprets the ovarian estradiol signal was studied to discover neurotransmitter systems involved in relaying the estradiol signal to the reproductive system. It was found that some corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) cells also contain estrogen receptors. The hypothesis that CRF may be one of the neurotransmitters responsible for mediating the estradiol-induced suppression of seasonal reproductive behavior in sheep was supported.

Victims' Rights And The Constitution: Moving From Guaranteeing Participatory Rights To Benefiting The Prosecution Symposium: Thoughts On Death Penalty Issues 25 Years After Furman V. Georgia., Robert P. Mosteller

St. Mary's Law Journal

Supporters of victims’ rights can be broadly grouped into three categories according to their basic goals. One category seeks to guarantee participatory rights in a governmental process (“Participatory Rights”). A second category of support for the victims’ rights amendment comes from those who are animated by a pro-prosecution, anti-defendant perspective on criminal law and procedure (“Prosecutorial Benefit”). The third group supporting victims’ rights is comprised of those who demand greater protection and support for victims by the government (“Victim Protection and Aid”). The first serious attempt to amend the United States Constitution on behalf of crime victims happened in 1982. …

Texas Groundwater: Reconciling The Rule Of Capture With Environmental And Community Demands Comment., Stephanie E. Hayes Lusk Jan 1998

Texas Groundwater: Reconciling The Rule Of Capture With Environmental And Community Demands Comment., Stephanie E. Hayes Lusk

St. Mary's Law Journal

In order to avert the depletion of water resources, many states have attempted to enact legislation aimed at promoting water conservation. Such legislation has been known to conflict with outdated principles of property ownership, namely the rule of capture. The rule of capture vests landowners with property rights in water located directly beneath their land. Texas categorizes water based on whether the water flows above or below the surface. Surface water is typically the property of the state, with property owners having no possessory interest in the surface water. Yet, the opposite is true for groundwater, where all rights to …

Hydraulic Fracturing: Stimulating Your Well Or Trespassing?, Laura H. Burney Jan 1998

Hydraulic Fracturing: Stimulating Your Well Or Trespassing?, Laura H. Burney

Faculty CLE

Many courts may determine hydraulic fracturing to be an impermissible trespass. Hydraulic fracturing is a common method used to increase production from oil and gas wells. However, the extent of wellbore fractures can only be determined by theoretical calculations. This reality affects the application of the legal doctrines of the rule of capture, common law trespass, and implied covenants in the oil and gas lease. When these controversies reach the court, a traditional policy conflict is also at play: whether to protect property rights or to encourage oil and gas production.

Without express legislative endorsement of fracturing as promoting valuable …

Latent Variable Generalized Linear Models, Jane Creagh-Osborne Jan 1998

Latent Variable Generalized Linear Models, Jane Creagh-Osborne

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) (McCullagh and Nelder, 1989) provide a unified framework for fixed effect models where response data arise from exponential family distributions. Much recent research has attempted to extend the framework to include random effects in the linear predictors. Different methodologies have been employed to solve different motivating problems, for example Generalized Linear Mixed Models (Clayton, 1994) and Multilevel Models (Goldstein, 1995). A thorough review and classification of this and related material is presented. In Item Response Theory (IRT) subjects are tested using banks of pre-calibrated test items. A useful model is based on the logistic function with …
