Comparative Calf Grazing Of Corn And Soybean Residues, D. J. Jordon, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Mark Klemesrud
Comparative Calf Grazing Of Corn And Soybean Residues, D. J. Jordon, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Mark Klemesrud
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A grazing trial was conducted in the winter of 1996-97 to compare the feeding value of soybean stubble to that of cornstalks. Irrigated bean residues were stocked at 0.5 animals/acre, while irrigated corn residues were stocked at 1.2 animals/acre. Calves grazing cornstalks gained (0.17 lb/day) faster (P = .003) than calves consuming soybean stubble (-0.03 lb/day). In addition, calves grazing cornstalks remained in fields 14 days longer. Diet samples were collected on both corn and soybean residues. Ruminally fistulated steer calves grazing bean stubble consumed diets high in crude protein (12- 25%), but low in organic matter digestibility (40-46%). Calves …
Lime Filtrate As A Calcium Source For Finishing Cattle, Mark Klemesrud, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Todd Milton
Lime Filtrate As A Calcium Source For Finishing Cattle, Mark Klemesrud, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Todd Milton
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Finishing diets containing wet corn gluten feed were fed to 128 yearling steers to evaluate inclusion of lime filtrate as the source of supplemental calcium. Lime filtrate supplied 0, 50, 100 and 150% of the base calcium level of .70%, with limestone supplying the remainder. While dry matter intake was reduced for the 100% level of calcium from lime filtrate (P<.10), average daily gain and feed efficiency were not different from the limestone control. The 150% level of calcium from lime filtrate did reduce average daily gain and feed efficiency (P<.10).
Nutrient Balance On Nebraska Feedlots, Richard K. Koelsch, Gary Lesoing
Nutrient Balance On Nebraska Feedlots, Richard K. Koelsch, Gary Lesoing
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A balance between the nutrient inputs and the managed nutrient outputs balance was constructed for 16 Nebraska feedlots to provide insight to potential environmental risks. Substantial nitrogen and phosphorus imbalances were observed for many participating feedlots. Size of the livestock operation and the degree of integration of livestock with a cropping operations provided only limited explanation concerning nutrient balance variations observed among the feedlots. Substantially improved nutrient balances were achieved by those feedlots marketing manure nutrients to off-farm customers. A “sustainable” nutrient balance appears possible for larger feedlots actively marketing manure nutrients.
In Situ Method For Estimating Forage Protein Degradability, Ryan Mass, Greg Lardy, Rick Grant, Terry J. Klopfenstein
In Situ Method For Estimating Forage Protein Degradability, Ryan Mass, Greg Lardy, Rick Grant, Terry J. Klopfenstein
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Four experiments including vegetative and dormant forages tested modifications of the in situ neutral detergent fiber nitrogen (NDFN) method of estimating forage undegraded intake protein (UIP). Experiments 1, 2 and 3 tested bag size, closure, rinsing, density, and reflux conditions. None of the modifications affected in situ NDFN content. Experiment 4 compared rates of in situ NDFN digestion calculated with or without correction for undegradability. A close relationship exists between rates calculated by the two methods. Modifications make the improved in situ NDFN method a more desirable means of estimating forage UIP than the standard method.
Cull Dry Edible Beans In Growing Calf Rations, Ivan G. Rush, Burt Weichenthal, Brad Van Pelt
Cull Dry Edible Beans In Growing Calf Rations, Ivan G. Rush, Burt Weichenthal, Brad Van Pelt
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Including cull dry edible beans into diets for steer calves in two yearly trials produced slightly different results. In the first year, calculated net energy levels were higher in diets with 5 or 10% dry beans and daily gains were equal or better than for the no-bean diets. In the second year, with equal net energy values in rations containing 0, 7.5 or 15% dry beans, daily gains and feed intake decreased linearly with dry bean additions. Feed efficiency was improved as bean level increased.
Reproductive Rights Of Women: Construction And Reality In International And United States Law, Kimberly A. Jones
Reproductive Rights Of Women: Construction And Reality In International And United States Law, Kimberly A. Jones
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article examines the disparity between the legal recognition of women's reproductive rights and the reality of their ability to exercise these rights. It explores how international and United States laws construct reproductive rights differently, but both fail to address the cultural, economic, and social barriers that prevent women from realizing these rights. The analysis underscores the need for states to take affirmative actions to dismantle these barriers and ensure that women can fully exercise their reproductive rights.

"A Revolution Which Seeks To Abolish Law, Must End Necessarily In Despotism": Louisa Mccord And Antebellum Southern Legal Thought, Alfred L. Brophy
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
Louisa McCord's essays provide a unique lens into the legal and political thought of antebellum Southern society, particularly her defense of slavery and the role of law in maintaining social order. She argued that law should ensure basic fairness in market transactions but should not interfere with the institution of slavery, which she viewed as a matter of sentiment rather than legal regulation. McCord's work challenges the notion that legal history is confined to the common law tradition, emphasizing the importance of understanding law as part of a broader societal outlook.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg And The Virginia Military Institute: A Culmination Of Strategic Success, Scott M. Smiler
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg And The Virginia Military Institute: A Culmination Of Strategic Success, Scott M. Smiler
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note examines Justice Ginsburg's pivotal role in shaping the Supreme Court's approach to gender-based discrimination, particularly through her advocacy for heightened scrutiny of such classifications. It highlights how her efforts culminated in the landmark decision of United States v. Virginia, where the Court ruled that Virginia Military Institute's (VMI) exclusion of women violated the Equal Protection Clause. The decision reinforced the requirement that gender-based classifications must meet an exceedingly persuasive justification, aligning with Ginsburg's long-standing commitment to dismantling gender stereotypes and advancing equal protection principles.

What Are We Doing When We Pray?, Jorgen Moltmann
What Are We Doing When We Pray?, Jorgen Moltmann
Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers
(Excerpt)
My God, we cry out and complain we groan and weep we are speechless and silent. And we beg and implore, we wish and we will, we crave and insist. We thank and praise, we rejoice and dance, we sing and we glorify. These are all ways of expressing our lives before God. To call them all 'praying' is much too narrow, because the word 'pray' means much the same as 'ask' and 'plead'. But to come to God only with our entreaties is hardly the expression of a true love for God. God is more than our heavenly …
Fisheries Co-Management And The Tahltan First Nation: From The Aboriginal Fisheries Strategy To A Treaty Regime (British Columbia), Kristen Lynn Smith
Fisheries Co-Management And The Tahltan First Nation: From The Aboriginal Fisheries Strategy To A Treaty Regime (British Columbia), Kristen Lynn Smith
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
For several years now, the Canadian Federal government’s Aboriginal Fisheries Strategy has provided a means for substantial co-management of fisheries resources by First Nations. Unfortunately, there is a widespread lack of understanding of the Aboriginal Fisheries Strategy (AFS) by all interested parties. This study examines the AF S agreement of the Tahltan First Nation of Northwestern British Columbia and other fisheries co-management agreements in place in B.C. It does so by comparing them with the provisions and process of development of comprehensive claim based co- management agreements elsewhere in Canada. It also offers an assessment of aboriginal fisheries co-management arrangements …

It's About Time: Practices Of Rest And Worship In Church And Culture, Dorothy C. Bass
Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers
(Excerpt)
At this institute on "Worship, Culture, and Catholicity: Remembering the Future" I may focus a little more on culture than have the other speakers, a choice perhaps appropriate for a church historian and student of American religious life. Let me begin, therefore, with a statement from an anthropologist: "Time talks," says Edward T. Hall in his book The Silent Language. "It speaks more plainly than words. The message it conveys comes through loud and clear. Because it is manipulated less consciously, it is subject to less distortion than the spoken language. It can shout the truth where words lie."

Review Of 'Artificial Legal Intelligence', Stephen M. Mcjohn
Review Of 'Artificial Legal Intelligence', Stephen M. Mcjohn
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
Artificial Legal Intelligence, by Pamela Gray, presents a thought-provoking approach to both computational models of legal reasoning and the use of evolutionary thinking about the law. Drawing on a prodigious amount of research, the book looks beyond the rather technical approach common in the field and attempts to place artificial legal intelligence within the broad structure of legal history. This paper first summarizes the book's vision of a computerized artificial legal intelligence, a vision of developments in both technology and legal history. The paper discusses how this fits with trends in both artificial intelligence and legal theory. The paper further …

Effect Of Environmental Structure On Evolutionary Adaptation, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher, Mark A. Bedau, Martin Zwick
Effect Of Environmental Structure On Evolutionary Adaptation, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher, Mark A. Bedau, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper investigates how environmental structure, given the innate properties of a population, affects the degree to which this population can adapt to the environment. The model we explore involves simple agents in a 2-d world which can sense a local food distribution and, as specified by their genomes, move to a new location and ingest the food there. Adaptation in this model consists of improving the genomic sensorimotor mapping so as to maximally exploit the environmental resources. We vary environmental structure to see its specific effect on adaptive success. In our investigation, two properties of environmental structure, conditioned by …

Developing A Theoretical And Empirical Ethnocultural Model Toward Predicting Crying Behavior In White College Women, Brian L. Ragsdale
Open Access Master's Theses
Self reported crying behavior in White college women along with ethnocultural variables which may influence their crying behavior was examined. Another focus of the study was to begin the development of an ethnocultural survey of crying behavior. Questions concerning socioeconomic status, religiosity/ spirituality, interpersonal experiences, family members feeling about crying behavior, perceptions of same race and other race crying, White Racial Identity Attitude (Helms, 1990) and the East/ West Questionnaire (Gilgen & Cho, 1979) were used as ethnocultural variables.
One hundred sixteen White women completed the survey during the first administration and sixty three of them completed the survey during …

Isolation Of The Virulence Gene(S) In The New, Live, Oral Vaccine Candidate Salmonella Typhimurium Sr-11 Fad, James H. Allen
Open Access Master's Theses
A DNA fragment containing the defective virulence gene(s) in the live oral vaccine candidate Salmonella typhimurium SR-11 Fad was isolated. Genomic DNA fragments from the vaccine candidate, constructed by Tn10d::cam transposon mutagenesis, were probed with the 1.4 Kbp chloramphenicol resistance gene contained in Tn10d::cam and analyzed by Southern hybridization. Two of the fragments, an 8.0 Kbp Hind III fragment and a 4.5 Kbp Pst I fragment, were isolated, cloned into E. coli HB 101, and mapped. The Pst I fragment, containing approximately 2.9 Kbp of flanking genomic DNA, was subcloned into the sequencing vector pBluescript …
Land Use Regulation, Takings Legislation, And The Wise Use Movement In Six States, Ronald M. Wolanski
Land Use Regulation, Takings Legislation, And The Wise Use Movement In Six States, Ronald M. Wolanski
Open Access Master's Theses
This project is the culmination of several months of research and data analysis on the Wise Use movement and takings legislation in six states (Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, Oregon, and Rhode Island). The aim of the research was to determine the relationship, if any, between the strength of environmental and land use regulation in the states and the prevalence of takings legislation. With a better understanding of the relationship of these factors, legislators, regulators, and planners will be better able address the concerns of constituents. My hypothesis was that the prevalence and strength of takings or property rights legislation is …
