Recent Insights Into Mesopotamian Accounting Of The 3rd Millennium B.C. -- Successor To Token Accounting, Richard Mattessich
Recent Insights Into Mesopotamian Accounting Of The 3rd Millennium B.C. -- Successor To Token Accounting, Richard Mattessich
Accounting Historians Journal
This paper examines from an accounting perspective recent work by Nissen et al. [1993], here regarded as an extension of the archaeological research of Schmandt-Besserat [1977, 1992] and its analysis by Mattessich [1987, 1994]. The transition from the 4th millennium B.C. to the 3rd millennium b.c. featured the use of proto-cuneiform and cuneiform accounting techniques to replace the older token accounting. This research reinforces the previously made hypothesis [Mattessich, 1987] that the inserting of tokens into a clay container during the last phase of token accounting corresponded to debit entries, while the impressing of tokens on the surface of the …

Development Of Taxation In The Bible: Improvements In Counting, Measurement, And Computation In The Ancient Middle East, Manuel L. Jose, Charles K. Moore
Accounting Historians Journal
This paper traces the development of five taxation types in the Bible : income taxes, property taxes, special assessment taxes, poll taxes (all direct taxes), and indirect taxes. The development of these taxes is discussed within the context of Israel's historical development. The impact of counting, measurement, and computation on the development of taxation is also considered.

Abstracts Of Contributed Papers Presented At The 1998 North American Echinoderms Meeting August 16-19, 1998, Wallops Island Marine Science Center, Wallops Island, Virginia
Gulf of Mexico Science
Following the tradition started at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (1989), and continued at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (1992), the third North American Echinoderms Meeting was sponsored by the Marine Science Consortium and held at the Wallops Island Marine Science Center in August of 1998. In keeping with the practices of prior meetings, this meeting provided a forum for colleagues from throughout North America to share current work, and fostered communication between researchers whose work is based upon some aspect of the biology of Echinodermata. Presentations covered a range of topics, from evolutionary relationships to ecological processes and from …

Variation In Morphology Vs Conservation Of A Mitochondrial Gene In Montastraea Cavernosa (Cnidaria, Scleractinia), Tonya L. Snell, David W. Foltz, Paul W. Sammarco
Gulf of Mexico Science
Skeletal morphology of many scleractinian corals may be influenced by environmental factors and may thus result in substantial intraspecific phenotypic plasticity and, possibly, in overlapping morphologies between species. Environmentally induced variation can also mask phenotypic variation that is genetically based. Morphological analyses and DNA sequence analyses were performed on Montastraea cavernosa from the Flower Garden Banks, Texas, and from the Florida Keys in order to assess variation within and between geographic regions. Skeletal characters, including corallite diameter, columella width, theca thickness, nearest-neighbor distance, length of first septa cycle, and width of first septa cycle, varied within colonies, among colonies, and …

"O Wind, Remind Him That I Have No Child": Infertility And Feminist Jurisprudence, Linda J. Lacey
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
Feminists have constructed a "grand theory" of infertility and new reproductive techniques that has little to do with reality. Much of the discussion of reproductive technology is written in highly abstract, philosophical terms, rather than in the more experiential, narrative style which characterizes much of feminist jurisprudence. The infertile woman is generally voiceless and invisible in the telling of this story; when she does appear she is dismissed or criticized. This Article is an attempt to begin dialogue which incorporates her perspective into the discussion.

Conservation And Variation In The Feeding Mechanism Of The Spiny Dogfish Squalus Acanthias, Cheryl D. Wilga, Philip J. Motta
Conservation And Variation In The Feeding Mechanism Of The Spiny Dogfish Squalus Acanthias, Cheryl D. Wilga, Philip J. Motta
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Changes in the feeding mechanism with feeding behavior were investigated using high-speed video and electromyography to examine the kinematics and motor pattern of prey capture, manipulation and transport in the spiny dogfish Squalus acanthias (Squalidae: Squaliformes). In this study, Squalus acanthias used both suction and ram behaviors to capture and manipulate prey, while only suction was used to transport prey. The basic kinematic feeding sequence observed in other aquatic-feeding lower vertebrates is conserved in the spiny dogfish. Prey capture, bite manipulation and suction transport events are characterized by a common pattern of head movements and motor activity, but are distinguishable …

Feeding Mechanism Of The Atlantic Guitarfish Rhinobatos Lentiginosus: Modulation Of Kinematic And Motor Activity, Cheryl D. Wilga, Philip J. Motta
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The kinematics and muscle activity pattern of the head and jaws during feeding in the Atlantic guitarfish Rhinobatos lentiginosus are described and quantified using high-speed video and electromyography to test hypotheses regarding the conservation and modulation of the feeding mechanism. Prey is captured by the guitarfish using suction. Suction capture, bite manipulation and suction transport behaviors in the guitarfish are similar to one another in the relative sequence of kinematic and motor activity, but can be distinguished from one another by variation in absolute muscle activation time, in the presence or absence of muscle activity and in the duration of …
