Oregon Danish Colony: Ethnic Assimilation In Junction City, 1902-1952, Gerald Rasmussen, Otto Larsen Jan 1998

Oregon Danish Colony: Ethnic Assimilation In Junction City, 1902-1952, Gerald Rasmussen, Otto Larsen

The Bridge

"A most desired place for Danish folks to settle." That

keynote launched the campaign to attract Danes to Junction

City. Who was the herald? What were the tidings?

The records are not particularly informative about A. C.

Nielsen. The Junction City Times only used the initials "A. C."

to refer to him. According to his great-grandson, Alfred

Christensen, his first name was Andreas and his middle

name was Christian, both common names in Denmark.

Effects Of Carbaryl, Permethrin, 4-Nonylphenol, And Copper On Muscarinic Cholinergic Receptors In Brain Of Surrogate And Listed Fish Species, S.B. Jones, L.B. King, L.C. Sappington, F.J. Dwyer, M. Ellersieck, D.R. Buckler

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

We investigated the regulation of the muscarinic cholinergic receptor (MChR) in brain from seven species of fish, two surrogates and five threatened or endangered species exposed to a series of chemicals as a measure of compensatory response among species. Fish were classified as either cold water (rainbow trout-surrogate, apache trout, lahanton trout) or warm water (fathead minnow-surrogate, razorback sucker, bonytail chub, colorado squawfish) and were exposed to chemicals shown to affect cholinergic pathways (carbaryl and permethrin) and two chemicals whose relationships to the cholinergic system is less clear (4-nonylphenol and copper). Downregulation of MChR occurred in all warm water species, …

Explaining The Uneven Penetration Ofindustrialization In The U.S. Dairy Sector, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, F. H. Buttel Jan 1998

Explaining The Uneven Penetration Ofindustrialization In The U.S. Dairy Sector, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, F. H. Buttel

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

One of the most dramatic trends in American farm-structural change over the past several decades has been the industrialization of livestock production. Many now expect that dairying in the United States will be the next major livestock sector to succumb to the industrialization trend. This paper utilizes a multidimensional definition of industrialization to critically examine evidence for and against the dairy industrialization hypothesis. The authors find that while there is a persistent trend toward larger units of production, and a geographical shift towards states with more industriallike farm operations, the penetration of industrial relations of production has occurred more slowly …

Film Review: Cop Land, James Morrison Jan 1998

Film Review: Cop Land, James Morrison

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

On the strength of Heavy and his new film, Mangold appears to be striving to forge an authentically ascetic style within the decidedly inhospitable climate of contemporary Hollywood. His decision to follow the anomalously quiet Heavy with a police-procedural that appears at least superficially to be in the up-tothe- minute blockbuster mode feels a bit like an exercise, an experiment in spiritual temptation-andresistance, and the news here is that Mangold has not sold out, as so many young filmmakers do after a first independent hit.

The Use Of Emergent Rocks As Refugia For The Cheat Mountain Salamander, Plethodon Nettingi Green, Beth Anne Pauley Jan 1998

The Use Of Emergent Rocks As Refugia For The Cheat Mountain Salamander, Plethodon Nettingi Green, Beth Anne Pauley

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Plethodon nettinqi was listed as a threatened species in 1989 by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (Pauley, 1991). Its total range is within 5 counties in eastern West Virginia. There are fewer then 60 disjunct populations known and most populations are above 3,000 ft. and are associated with emergent rocks or narrow ravines with Rhododendron. It is hypothesized the P. netting! survived lumbering practices at the turn of the century by taking refuge beneath large emergent rocks and narrow ravines with Rhododendron. This study examined environmental factors associated with emergent rocks that might regulate the distribution of P. …

Iowa's Avifauna: Recent Changes And Prospects For The Future, James J. Dinsmore

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Iowa's avifauna has changed dramatically since 1980. The state list now has 40 additional species and totals 398 species, the most of any vertebrate group. Four species that had not previously nested in Iowa (Ring-billed Gull, Great-tailed Grackle, House Finch, Eurasian Tree Sparrow) and four whose nesting populations had disappeared (Double-crested Cormorant, Sandhill Crane, Piping Plover, Least Tern) now breed regularly here. Little Blue Heron, Cattle Egret, White-faced Ibis, Mississippi Kite, Prairie Warbler, and Red Crossbill nested for the first time but do not have established nesting populations. Trumpeter Swan, Peregrine Falcon, Greater Prairie Chicken, and Sharp-tailed Grouse have been …
