G98-1353 Fed Cattle Pricing, Dillon M. Feuz, Ted C. Schroeder, Clement E. Ward

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses pricing alternatives for fed cattle, including live weight, dressed weight and grid pricing. Pricing fed cattle is becoming more complex, requiring more time to evaluate pricing alternatives and marketing cattle. Is there one best pricing method? How are live weight, dressed weight, and grid or formula prices related? This NebGuide will provide answers to these and other questions about fed cattle pricing.

In Memoriam: Memorial Tributes For Professor Elizabeth B. Clark, Ronald A. Cass, Thomas A. Green, Stanley N. Katz, Katherine Stone, Pnina Lahav, William W. Park, Aviam Soifer, David J. Seipp

Tributes

Today we come together to remember Professor Elizabeth Battelle Clark, Betsy to all who knew her. We were shocked to hear of her illness, inspired by the intensity of her fight against it, and deeply saddened by her death. We have come together before to mourn her loss. Now we gather once more to celebrate our good fortune to have known Betsy and to share our remembrances of her.

Microsatellite Evolution: Testing The Ascertainment Bias Hypothesis, Allan M. Crawford, Steven M. Kappes, Korena A. Paterson, Mauricio J. Degotari, Ken G. Dodds, Brad A. Freking, Roger T. Stone, Craig W. Beattie Jan 1998

Microsatellite Evolution: Testing The Ascertainment Bias Hypothesis, Allan M. Crawford, Steven M. Kappes, Korena A. Paterson, Mauricio J. Degotari, Ken G. Dodds, Brad A. Freking, Roger T. Stone, Craig W. Beattie

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Previous studies suggest the median allele length of microsatellites is longest in the species from which the markers were derived, suggesting that an ascertainment bias was operating. We have examined whether the size distribution of microsatellite alleles between sheep and cattle is source dependent using a set of 472 microsatellites that can be amplified in both species. For those markers that were polymorphic in both species we report a significantly greater number of markers (P < 0.001) with longer median allele sizes in sheep, regardless of microsatellite origin. This finding suggests that any ascertainment bias operating during microsatellite selection is only a minor contributor to the variation observed.

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

A genetic map of Ovis aries (haploid n = 27) was developed with 519 markers (504 microsatellites) spanning —3063 cM in 26 autosomal linkage groups and 127 cM (female specific) of the X Chromosome (Chr). Genotypic data were merged from the IMF flock (Crawford et al., Genetics 140, 703, 1995) and the USDA mapping flock. Seventy-three percent (370/504) of the microsatellite markers on the map are common to the USDA-ARS U.S. Meat Animal Research Center cattle linkage map, with 27 of the common markers derived from sheep. The number of common markers per homologous linkage group ranges from 5 to …

G98-1343 Fall Vegetable Gardening, Dale T. Lindgren, Susan D. Schoneweis

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses the possibilities for and needs of a fall garden.

Though often overlooked by the gardener, planting vegetables in July and August for fall production is an excellent practice. Late plantings of cool- and warm-season vegetables can extend the harvest long after spring-planted crops have ceased production. Most cool-season vegetables grow as well as or better than those planted in the spring as they mature during shorter, cooler days. Flavors of vegetables maturing in the cool, crisp days of autumn are often sweeter and milder than those grown during hot summer weather. This is especially true for cole …

Philosophy, Literature, And Laughter: Notes On An Ontology Of The Moment, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 1998

Philosophy, Literature, And Laughter: Notes On An Ontology Of The Moment, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

There is an initial difficulty which merits acknowledgment at the outset of this inquiry. In philosophy, all categories are weighted toward reflection and away from spontaneity. It is hard to envision a philosophy of laughter, notwithstanding Bergson's familiar efforts to categorize the comic, or Nietzsche's provocations lauding caprice. Philosophical discourse has been solidly and traditionally anchored in eternal concerns far from the madding eruption of laughter--the sound of frolic signifying nothing. The characteristic philosophical disdain for, and obsession with escape from: the momentary, the pleasurable, the distraction of the body and temptations of the senses, the seduction of, and abandonment …

Telling Stories, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 1998

Telling Stories, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

In what follows I will be using Native American culture and literature as the primary focus for a discussion of storytelling. For this culture, the life of speech and the presencing of meaning through the sharing of stories are vital to the very existence and identity of a people. Momaday's remarks about the nature of the relationship between language and experience surely are not limited to the lives of Native Americans. His accompanying claim that we cannot exist apart from the moral dimension of language is no less applicable to our own culture, but showing the importance of an awareness …

Trace Elements In The Aquatic Bird Food Chain At The North Ponds, Texaco Refinery Casper, Wyoming, Kimberly Dickerson, Pedro Ramirez Jr. Jan 1998

Trace Elements In The Aquatic Bird Food Chain At The North Ponds, Texaco Refinery Casper, Wyoming, Kimberly Dickerson, Pedro Ramirez Jr.

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The objectives of this study were to determine nesting success of aquatic birds, trace element concentrations in the aquatic food chain, and whether trace elements were biomagnifying through the aquatic food chain of ponds at the inactive Texaco Refinery, in Evansville, Wyoming. Trace element concentrations in samples collected from the Texaco Refinery were compared to those found in samples collected from a background site, Pathfinder National Wildlife Refuge.

The ponds at the inactive refinery provided a source of water to aquatic birds in an otherwise arid landscape. Nesting success for shorebirds using an island in Pond 1 was greater than …
