Parameter Estimates For Direct, Maternal, And Grandmaternal Genetic Effects For Birth Weight And Weaning Weight In Hereford Cattle, J. Dodenhoff, L. Dale Van Vleck, Stephen D. Kachman, R. M. Koch Jun 1998

Parameter Estimates For Direct, Maternal, And Grandmaternal Genetic Effects For Birth Weight And Weaning Weight In Hereford Cattle, J. Dodenhoff, L. Dale Van Vleck, Stephen D. Kachman, R. M. Koch

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Birth and weaning weights adjusted for age of dam from four lines of Hereford cattle were analyzed to determine the relationships among grandmaternal, maternal, and direct genetic effects. Three lines were selected for 1) weaning weight (WWL), 2) yearling weight (YWL), and 3) an index of yearling weight and muscle score (IXL). The fourth line was an unselected control line (CTL). Numbers of observations ranged from 1,699 (CTL) to 2,811 (WWL), and number of animals in the pedigree file ranged from 2,266 to 3,192. Two animal models were used to obtain estimates by REML using an average information method. Model …

Is It Evolution Yet? A Critique Of Evolutionary Archaeology, James L. Boone, Eric Alden Smith Jun 1998

Is It Evolution Yet? A Critique Of Evolutionary Archaeology, James L. Boone, Eric Alden Smith

Anthropology Faculty & Staff Publications

The application of Darwinian evolutionary theory to archaeology has taken two divergent and rather distinct paths over the past two decades. According to one program, often referred to as evolutionary archaeology, cultural change as seen in the archaeological record can best be explained in terms of the direct action of natural selection and other Darwinian processes on heritable variation in artifacts and behavior. The other approach, referred to as evolutionary or behavioral ecology, explains cultural and behavioral change as forms of phenotypic adaptation to varying social and ecological conditions, using the assumption that natural selection has designed organisms to respond …

Heritability Of Expression Of The 70kd Heat-Shock Protein In Drosophila Melanogaster And Its Relevance To The Evolution Of Thermotolerance, Robert A. Krebs, Martin E. Feder, Jeehyun Lee Jun 1998

Heritability Of Expression Of The 70kd Heat-Shock Protein In Drosophila Melanogaster And Its Relevance To The Evolution Of Thermotolerance, Robert A. Krebs, Martin E. Feder, Jeehyun Lee

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

The principle inducible heat-shock protein of Drosophila melanogasrer, Hsp70, contributes to thermotolerance throughout the entire life cycle of the species but may also reduce fitness in some life stages. In principle, selection might maximize the benefits of Hsp70 expression relative to its costs by adjusting the magnitude of Hsp70 expression for each life-cycle stage independently. Therefore we examined whether the magnitude of Hsp70 ex pre sion varied during the life cycle and the relationship of this variation to several life-history traits. For 28 isofemale lines derived from a single natural population, estimates of heritable variation in Hsp70 expression ranged between …

Evidence For Defects In The Trafficking And Translocation Of Glut4 Glucose Transporters In Skeletal Muscle As A Cause Of Human Insulin Resistance, W. Timothy Garvey, Lidia Maianu, Ju-Hong Zhu, Ginger Brechtel-Hook, Penny Wallace, Alain D. Baron Jun 1998

Baron

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Insulin resistance is instrumental in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus and the Insulin Resistance Syndrome. While insulin resistance involves decreased glucose transport activity in skeletal muscle, its molecular basis is unknown. Since muscle GLUT4 glucose transporter levels are normal in type 2 diabetes, we have tested the hypothesis that insulin resistance is due to impaired translocation of intracellular GLUT4 to sarcolemma. Both insulin-sensitive and insulin-resistant nondiabetic subgroups were studied, in addition to type 2 diabetic patients. Biopsies were obtained from basal and insulin-stimulated muscle, and membranes were subfractionated on discontinuous sucrose density gradients to equilibrium or under nonequilibrium …

The Frat was the official member publication of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf (NFSD). First established in 1902, the publication ran for just over a century, until its closure in 2006.---NFSD was an insurance business established in 1901.
